Styling feedback: khakis, a (hidden) tie, shirt, jumper and denim jacket

So yesterday, for my games business class, I did something that was rather unusual for me, and I put on a tie. It was similar to what I've got on here in that I put a jumper over it to create an effect that I saw on an Instagram video. As soon as the class was over I took off the tie, I don't think I'd put it on right lol. So today I put together an outfit that was inspired by several things, which I will post here, but for now I want to get some feedback on the fit, how well does it work? Should I have the tie hidden or exposed?

Rewatching the video, one thing I'm definitely noticing is that the sweater vest he's wearing shows the tie more than mine

I honestly couldn’t have told that you had a tie on - so you might as well have left it out and the fit would be been just as good. I believe there’s potential for a tie to work here though. I noticed in the two fits you posted as inspo the tie does the opposite of the jacket - in Zeos fit it’s long jacket/shortish tie and in Arts fit it’s short jacket/longish tie. It might be sensible to consider this if you’re going for a tie again. What do you mean you don’t think you put it on right?

Well yesterday I tried to put one on, in a rush since my class was almost about to start, and I got it on!... Sloppily. It was obvious to me that I didn't put it on correctly as the thin end was dangling along with the wide end.

Like in a side by side kind of way?

Yeah

I’m assuming you did a four in hand - this usually happens it you accidentally twist the tie a bit when doing the final pull through the loop.

For me I've got a long jumper and a short tie

Definitely don’t wear a tie over your jumper. Also your tie doesn’t really fill the empty space in the open jacket, which it does in both of your inspo pics. I recommend picking up a wider (and less shiny) tie at your local charity shop for a max of 5 quid. I’m not saying a tie over a jumper is always a bad move, it might work in some more avant garde outfits but I don’t think it has a place in what I think is the look you’re going for.

one thing that jumps out to me, get better ties shiny ties aren’t what you want i’m with holfram in the sense of you can’t really see the tie, but you could definitely work it out, and nice fit on the whole! long jumper short tie is the way to go btw, nothing worse than tie peaking out

the fit is good imo BUT there's no use in wearing a tie that isn't visible bigger pants and no sweater would be my preference but if you're committed to those cuffing them would help

I've got some Docker khakis and they're pretty good! Unfortunately they're slim legged.

that is very flattering but one critical aspect to this fit is proportion - the shirt is huge (and was going to be untucked initially), the pants are huge and cropped and low on my hips, and it took some trial and error to get the tie length "right" to balance both out with the jacket. the colors are fairly neat and straightforward because i figured doing bold silhouette + bold colors would be too much for one day lol. you do not need to put in this much thought to a fit, but i figured it would help to see where i was coming from 👍

Sam, back to the tie bit — do you have the collar button done on your shirt? From your pics it seems like no + the tie is loosened. Ideally you’d want your collar closed and the tie tightened up to your collar so that it sits more similarly to Art’s. I’d also personally suggest knots that aren’t four-in-hands when under non v neck sweaters, as I find that they don’t sit well. Typically I’ll do a pratt knot, because it’s symmetrical but smaller than a Windsor.

that is very flattering

Echoing what others are saying, the tie isn’t doing much in your fit so it’s kinda pointless. A shiny tie like that reads too formal so it comes across as a mistake. A matte tie with big patterns reads a touch more casual and it works with the idea of being subversive Note how Art and Zeo’s fits both have matte, patterned ties A subversive move is one that’s wrong according to the rules, but done in a way that looks intentional, not like an actual mistake
