Cold Weather Clothing - Topic of the day 1/29/25
It’s now the middle of winter! What do you wear in the extreme cold? Do you do style or substance? What are your favorite brands? Any materials you like more?

my theory is that you never ever need a puffer (im in nyc tho)
i HATE puffers
i like my insulated jeans and sneakers so i can still look somewhat normal before it gets so cold that it’s a fight for survival
Gore Tex and fleece is the best friend for very frigid temps, extended time outdoors in the cold etc
But there’s something to be said about the fact that people spent time outside long before fancy tech fabrics existed
My hot take is that if you’re walkin from your house to your car, then car to your job, and you’re wearing a winter coat that was designed for summiting K2, you’re a real goofball
Unless you live in like, the very far north

Those socks are saving my life every single day
^darn tough also slaps too
This winter has been nice bc Ive been more intentional with layering
But ngl when we have weeks where it‘s -10°C every single day I just start wearing my grandma‘s fur coats and my mom‘s wool sweaters
Usually my winter dressing is somewhat limited because I commute by bike every day, and I tend to run hot while cycling, so I rarely even wear my chunky sweater with a jacket on top, let alone anything resembling a coat. I only need that kind of stuff when im spending extended periods outside without being physically active.
I will say that wearing a scarf and gloves makes a huge difference in terms of warmth.
Big Parka/Big Sweater/Ushanka type beat
goretex is for cowards
Day to day, just having layers with the right fabrics (wool, fleece). My style doesn't change much, if anything I like it more as I can wear more layers. I run hot, so I much prefer my style in the Fall/ Winter/ Spring.
But it gets really cold sometimes here so having tech gear/ parka/ puffer is necessary for some days in general, and specifically for doing outdoor activities and sports - where I don't give a shit about being fashionable.
It’s about layers - undershirt, main shirt, fleece, outer coat etc. I don’t really like my puffer but I wear it because it’s what I own
Also warm socks are essential, and probably more important than almost anything else
i just double up on pants, and big coat it the fuck up
I take full advantage of the relatively mild climate and wear as much wool as my body can handle. Particular fan of big wool coats and turtlenecks. I need more cold weather wool pants.
I used to just wear puffer jackets but this winter I got a couple of vintage Pendleton wool jackets/coats. For pants I go with merino base layers and heavier jeans.
When you guys say puffer do you just mean any down jacket
It almost never gets cold enough here for a real down jacket, but I wish it did
I gotta say I feel like you’re playing yourself if you’re avoiding a down jacket
I LOVE PUFFY DOWN JACKETS
Unless you live somewhere warm
I HATE PUFFY DOWN JACKETS
FIGHT ME
i'm kidding actually, i know there are good ones
wear gloves and glove liners, protect from heat loss at your extremeties, add a bunch of layers, etc
but my mom was trying to get me to buy this for a while
Aesthetics nonwithstanding there is simply nothing like a big puffy down or synthetic down jacket
so i had to take this stance
regardless of fabric, all of these things will always be true
sorry, ugly
thats what i told HER
cover up surface area/skin
If you don’t need one though, you don’t need one
Aside from puffy down jackets, I have to say that shearling remains one of the GOATs for cold weather. As long as you’re not getting wet, it’s incredible. So warm, super soft, luxurious, a billion good looking options (and a billion bad looking ones).
Darn Tough, Smart Wool, Pantherella, Costco ladies merino, and Carhartt wool socks are my go-toes for cold weather. For some reason, my toes are always the thing that gets coldest very first so my feet always stay cozy.
Anonymousism and RoToTo make excellent socks for cold floors inside, but I’ve found that I’m not a fan of them in a boot or shoe
not the belt :xd:
gotta have somewhere to attach the leash for your spawn
gotta remind the world you have an ideal womanly figure when it's below freezing
why do you think I love belted overcoats so much? everyone gotta see my girlish shape
Puffer are goated
People are just haters
I want one that looks like a regular coat but is padded
ill be like, just a little bit cold if it makes my fit better
but also like everyone else said big coat to good
thats cute.....
it's from like 5 years ago and I tried looking and can't find it
aside from the fact that there are some activities im not doing in a big wool coat like shoveling snow or dealing with heavy wet snow, puffers are also a great option for chunk and poof that you so rarely get and can be cool
and nice ones can feel great
wear whatever you want with a mesh base layer
northen europe had it for decades youre allowed to cunt it up as well
i made a thread complaining abt this, but it's hard to find something for MN weather that isn't a puffer
I layer of course, but sometimes that isn't enough
Counter-argument:
Down is insanely warm and efficient, and is 100% necessary once you hit a certain temperature. "Puffers" are a lightweight option to employ that warmth, often with a boxy hem.
And you can definitely make them work.
Have u thought about wearing.8 wool coats stacked on top of each other
ngl i agree about the good properties of puffers but i do not like gorpcore that much personally
I need the puffer to signal to people I’m part of the CG/Moncler gang
How else will they know I’m insufferable
also get puffers with more fill power if you need to
puffers are really cool
I wear sweater/wool coat/wool pants or jeans/hiking boots in all cold weather anywhere lower than 40
Only diff is if i put gloves on and if i close my coat
hotel toilet paper roll jackets
uniqlo heat tech turtlenecks are the 1-2 punch of 'good baselayer' (especially the high neck) and actually good looking
i generally follow the "outdoor" method of layering (base - insulator - wind layer). much of my vintage tailoring has polyester or polyblend lining which does decently at cutting the wind
NEED an overcoat injection stat but cannot find anything wool and reasonably priced

I'm going to search for a trench with a similar lining. Jacket and liner are both cute!
i think rainmaker had or has one at one point?
The first one I posted is current season at oak and fort but is women's sizing
not as nice as the one above but uniqlo u and then uniqlo have/have done something similar too. puffer trench but not with a separate liner
Rains has some interesting belted coats. Might scratch your itch.
Eddie Bauer have made some neat down lined long coats
Thanks everyone. Going to spend some time first looking for one with a separate liner so I have options for wearing it. Prefer something more versatile like this due to my climate.
When I’m hiking I wear a hard shell and the lining is a puffer that zips in and out
Would be very cool tech if I ever wanted to wear the puffer separately (I don’t)
If you still have cell service there is no reason for you to be wearing a puffer though I agree
https://youtu.be/9UDYFt_8ycw?si=mRq3WDOosxGGWX9g p sure they have cell service
