Inexpensive but good basics
Hello, I really need some new, good fitting clothing. Nothing I have fits very well or is just old. I don’t have a ton of money but I just want some good quality basics that will fit well on a larger guy.

Mostly rn I will wear a pair of jeans that don’t fit too well.. athletic style tshirt and a jacket
And shoes that are like running sneakers or hiking shoes 💀
Bread you know this
Budget please
Well
Let’s say $250? Idk
I’d be ok spending that much
Idk if that can get me much
Also for this kinda think a few basic inspo pics of the kind of style you are going for would be helpful
Or just like plain tees and pants?
Hmm just basic stuff? No particular style but I am drawn to like workwear stuff
Plain tee and pants is generally good imo
Maybe some button downs
Shoes
Uniqlo
J crew
Thrifting
Used from eBay
Ok so that’s stores
What to get from them?
I like the uh, thicker style tshirts?
so it doesn’t show my body features through it
Can I give you a word of advice. You seem to be rushing to spend a whole bunch of money. Take a step back, have a look on pinterest and try find some specific things you enjoy
Qlo has some 100% cotton shirts in a fairly thick fabric. I find them kinda small/slim so you may instead be interested in the airism oversized ones
I know Abercrombie had pretty thick, coarser long sleeve t-shirts. The "Premium heavyweight". Looking at their site, they have some shirt versions of this. Haven't bought from them in awhile, so I'm not sure if it is as good as it once was. https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/premium-heavyweight-20-tee-58965824?categoryId=12837&faceout=model&seq=10&afsource=social+proofing

I know the Basic Bastard guide is less recommended here than it used to be, but it kind of sounds like what you're after, have you read the current version? https://malefashionadvice.substack.com/p/building-a-basic-wardrobe-v70 or looked at the Best Of spreadsheet? https://malefashionadvice.substack.com/p/building-a-basic-wardrobe-v70
Building A Basic Wardrobe v7.0
Version 7 of the classic MFA post
Why is it less recommended
it's pretty prescriptive towards a certain kinda style/look and people are more into "just find your own style and preferences and roll with that" at this point
Sounds like you want jeans and t shirts to start?
but I think it holds up as a good entry point, and the pieces it has you get can be quite flexibly used no matter what your style is
Basically.. maybe some button downs, some different pants? Shorts? Shoes
Just basics
Wrangler 13mwz jeans and Bronson t shirts are best bang for the buck if buying new on a budget.
Was kind of overused for a while so the advice around here moved more toward encouraging experimentation. But "I just want to be a little more put together and I'm not sure about more specific preferences yet" is the exact advice it's geared toward
True
Even if prescribing a specific style is a little dated, the advice for basics is good
For button downs, I just bought Portuguese Flannel ones on the current sale. A lot is sold out now, but it is a very a high quality shirt for ~$70 new. Spier & Mackay for OCBDs, but it seems like they are always out of the most popular colors.
My real advice is buying secondhand though.
Hmmm
Maybe for special things I’d buy secondhand
What is the hang up?
Hang up for what
I just prefer online shopping
Secondhand can be online
Yeah, used versions of what you would want are probably half the cost or less on eBay compared to new. I don’t use it for T-shirts, but I know cheap pants and button downs are plentiful on there
carhartt
dickies and duck brand in addition to other brand recs
I do like carhart
Expensive tho
I will do Some shopping on my computer later
And update this thread more
Also consider brands like Field & Stream, L.L Bean etc. for flannels and thicker chamois cloth shirts
These sound expensive
Not massively
~£20 to ~£30 per shirt in my experience, so like $15-$25, if not cheaper over in the states
The Wrangler 13mwz jeans
Do they fit to size?
They on sale on Amazon rn for $30
What colors would be good to buy
Black and indigo?
Indigo is the classic in style right now. I would say true to size but I size up or else they are tight in the thighs.
The only other thing is the light wash have a super preppy connotation in parts of the southern U.S. and specifically Texas
Indigo and black then?
I’m not in Texas at all
I’m in NJ lol
i’d go for stonewash and rigid indigo i think they call it
Yeah, just wanted to warn you might be signaling something you are totally unaware of to any southern transplants. You’d probably have people randomly coming up asking where in Texas you are from.
Like this is a real thing:
light wash jeans are not gonna attract attention in NJ be for real
Homie, have you been to New Jersey
Even my friend from New Canaan says he gets lighthearted ribbing comments when he wears them
Ok?
I was just pointing out that it does have connotations
Its a complete sidetrack from breads question
Ok
can we re-rail
ANYWAY
Light Wash Jeans Are Fine Bread
guys for gods sake lmfao
please stop talking about things that aren't inexpensive but good basics
alright
everyone is wrong
Lmao
In
I uh
The light wash isn’t on sale anyway
Jsut the dark indigo
And black
Suggestion?
Just buy some pants
Yes what color lmao
I don’t care, indigo and black are basically interchangeable, just pick one and go forth into the world a better, more pantsed individual
Ok 🙂
I bought a pair
Now T shirts?
Where can I get something basic
And also basic shoes?
I need cheap but decent shoes
Causal wear
tees = check upthread, uniqlo u, abercrombie, duck brand, carhartt
shoes = sneakers or not sneakers?
also, again, WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET FOR THIS
Cowboy boots
Ariat or Dan Post
Tees: military surplus
250 so I have 220 left
lol
Sneakers are fun
I don’t wear fancy shoes
Boots or sneakers are good
