Travel Packing - Topic of the day 1/10/25
We recently talked about what to wear when traveling but have we talked about what to pack? Are you a light packer or a heavy packer? Do you use organizational methods? Do you dress to impress on trips or dress in comfort?

I don't normally go on holidays frequently a year (only usually occasionally). On the times I do go I like to take some favourite clothing. Usually I'll go shopping for some holiday clothes too.

Packing cubes the goat
Packing cubes the goat if packing light
you just need bigger cubes
If I’m bringing a suitcase and want to have lots of clothes I just fold it all in because my big pants and denim take up like most of my entire cube alone
Yeah I do
I am following this thread with great interest as I am literally traveling tomorrow
Thank you Mr totd
Have a good trip
I’m a heavy packer :psywut: I just checked a bag for a three night trip
I use packing cubes for smaller things but I find them pretty useless as far as sweaters and bottoms go
I usually do the “take a half empty bag and shop while on vacation” :goodbyemoney:
nyc bag starting half empty for me
gotta fill it up
I came with a full suitcase thinking it would stop me from buying too much but guess who bought a chunky ass sweater this morning :xdcrying:
I mostly travel for hiking so it's mostly functional for me
unless I'm going to some big city and I know I won't be hiking anywhere I'd try to pick pretty clothes instead of more functional ones
yoooo
i did that
that stuff rules
except now i’m trying to figure out how to put my entire wardrobe in TWO suitcases
maybe 2.5 it depends on how much space i have in that rolling laptop bag
Don’t be shy show us what u copped
oh yeh I would only use packing cubes for underwear, socks, small things like that. Tees
anything bigger like pants and sweaters would be folded
or if I'm restricted to only hand luggage rolling stuff can get more into a smaller bag
Get that gear acquisition syndrome with the packing cuuuubes
I got GAS
Real talk packing cubes are OK with bags with little organisation in them already. If your bag has internal dividers/meshes you can often skip packing cubes. Tho having at least 1 packing cube for dirty clothing helps.
Tho could use a wet bag (sic?) for that anyways
I really like one bagging since I hate baggage claim, but when I went total convenience/comfort it sort of robs a part of the joy of being on vacation. Really would only go merino shirts/technical pants if I’m doing more than 60% hiking. I also hate having certain items I only use for travel
Fancy w ur packing cube for dirty clothes I just use an old plastic grocery bag
packing cubes are goated though esp in winter if you get the compression ones
No holes with cubes. I like my dirties to stew in a je ne sais quoi soup

Ooo TIL these exist
the sweatpants i got then have been my pajama pants since because i left them in the hotel on accident (oops)
the purple converse high tops i’ve worn a lot since i got them because i was specifically chasing that color
I take one of these with me on trips for used underwear, keeps it all in 1 place and at the end of the trip you can just chuck it straight in the wash

MUJI UK - Ryohin Keikaku Europe Ltd
Washable Clothes Case Large
Also packs into its own pocket so it's super small when empty
I pack so many clothes to go everywhere I have a big suitcase and I fill it with emotional support clothing
Rule 1: One pair of underpants per day and an extra pair in case you shit youself
Rule 2: Pack half of what you think you need, except where that violates rule 1
Roll it up, throw it in a duffel, call it a day
absolutely criminal that i can't order this off of muji's US site
girl what did YOU cop
it's always fun at the end of a trip when you buy stuff without a bag and have to re-figure how to carry everything
more than a few travel fits are of the 'just throw stuff on' family
I hate doing checked luggage so I use a carry on suitcase and a travel backpack that maxes out the personal item size limit.
Packing cubes help me a lot organization wise and it's easier for me to pull stuff out than dig through for one item
My biggest rule for longer trips is: avoid cotton.
I’m curious about that. Why no cotton?
Smells?
It gets gross faster than some other things, merino is goated for wearing stuff more times than you probably should
Yeah, if I had all merino I would do that, and I do wear my wool over and over. But I don’t think I have an all wool wardrobe for travel.
If I’m really going light and don’t care about getting some fits it’s 3 merino tees 2 pairs of straight work pants and socks and underwear in a backpack works very well
my biggest rule for longer trips is to find a way to do laundry
i really only pack for a week and then wash as needed
i try to wear tech or wool trousers for travel
partially or fully elasticated waistband helps a lot when on the go
It's not just that cotton smells. It also dries really slowly. Wool and synthetics you can rinse in the sink and hang to dry.
