Size check Canali Alpaca coat
Hello guys
I just received this second hand amazing coat from Canali. Its 70% Alapca and 30% wool.
I love it, I think the length is ok(could'nt do longer probably im 175cm/5'9)
I feel like its a little big. What do you think?
My main concern is the sleeves, not how long but how large they are. Is it something that I could fix in a tailor shop or something?
Thanks.

Wrong pants and no comments on the socks 😂 I just couldn't wait to try it on
I think this is great
It’s an overcoat you’ll be thankful for the sleeve size when you wear a shirt and blazer
This is supposed to be big because it needs to go over pretty much anything you might want to wear under it
I tried it on with just some pullover thats not very thick below.
Maybe it wouldn't feel as big if I had a suit below?
Very likely
But this looks just about spot on with the fit
I also think wider pants will help fill out the look
Im kinda new to such coats and I just wanna make sure I don't look ridiculous
It looks like you're just wearing sweats underneath which is understandable
But this jacket looks like it is intended to be a fuller cut
Yeah I was lmao for the post office
Okay thanks for the positive reviews so far. In the case I end up wanting to decrease the 'width' of the sleeves, is it even doable?
I wouldn't bother
Looks great
Yeah it is. Not a cheap alteration but not super expensive either.
Will have to start from the raglan seam down
Sleeves should be large
It'll look unusual and the sleeves right now look totally fine and proportional
Don’t worry
Wider pants will fix it
Example
I would say it looks chunky bc of a styling problem, with it being closed you feel like you are TOO big, I would go open with smth slimer underneath to make an interesting silhouette
do NOT change those sleeves
Ok thanks. Only issue is that it smells a little old. Like 'ive been in your grandma's closet for 3 years' kinda smell
Maybe pressing could fix that?
Probably won’t change the smell much
No man you’re supposed to close a coat when it gets cold
I’d just hang it up and let it air out
Hang outside for a day
Or go sit in a coffee shop wearing it for a few hours
lol
Lol okay. I wear fragrances as well
I'll let it hang outside when its not raining
I’m very jealous of you btw it looks like such a beaut
Coat is awesome
if you can avoid it I would try to tbh, it looks better if its open
like I usually prefer wearing more layers and a thermal tshirt than closing my jacket or coat
okay well that’s crazy advice
Yeah this is a strange take
The coolest thing you can do in your clothes is to just treat them like clothes and use them functionally
Coat looks good closed
And open
There are zero issues with the coat and it looks nice
I actually think there are huge issues with the coat and so you should give it to me right now
Im glad you guys think it looks okay. Always scared to order second hand online and im new to it
This is insane lol
Coat looks really great btw. Cozy as hell
Smell is probably mothballs if I had to guess
Smell should go away on its own after a few weeks
Provided you don’t continue to use mothballs lol
Smell of mothballs is a guilty pleasure of mine tbh. Smells like my grandparents.
Yeah definitely smells like grandparents stuff haha
adding to don't change the sleeves (also there's a chance tapering them will effectively shorten them unless you have a particularly detail orientated tailor)
the jacket is really nice, and i think the slim pants are what's throwing it off visually
i often have that problem when trying stuff on, i'm in the wrong clothes. a blazer will look goofy because i'm wearing a tank top and shorts, for example
check #waywt to see how big coats like that are styled, particularly @pierre bourdieu and @Holfram who have really nice single breasted outerwear like that
I told you that Canali fits roomy :cigchimp:
That’s a beautiful coat man
Such a beautiful coat that fits you lovely
Yeah u did. But meaning you think its too big?
You said the sleeves are roomier than you like...
Yes?
Yes that falls under the cut being roomy and the need to compare measurements
Again, measure a coat that fits how you want if you want others to fit similarly
I mesured everything except how large the sleeves are, since ive never seen that measurement used anywhere it didnt come to mind
Big sleeves good
aren't the sleeves in this case too long?
no
they're covering the entire hand, very different from the example Holfram sent
The sleeves are meant to be like that on my coat.
The point isn’t the length of the sleeves it’s the width, which is wide on both examples. @Holfram’s is a more traditionally cut coat while mine is a bathrobe coat from Lemaire with more dramatically oversized proportions
I know, but I was curious about the sleeve length. I'll make a thread about it, would love if you could post a pic of yours
plus pierre's coat is proportionately longer than holf's
Yeah no problem just providing more info for you
You’re right though the sleeves r really long. It took some getting used to for me.
But I love it.
What happens to a mostly alpaca coat under rain? Should I try to not wet it?
It's fine to get it wet
Avoid heavy rain of course
But light rain or wearing it with an umbrella won't damage it
And just let it air dry if it does get wet.
Im going to try to let it outside for a day but Im not sure how I could hang it outside. Also im gonna have to wait for a sunny day because its raining damn hard here
Do you guys have any other advice for the smell? My mom told me I should have returned it and its gonna be near impossible to remove the smell..
Should I give it to the pressing and hopefully they make it go away? Its 70% alpaca 30% wool im not even sure what to tell them for the washing instructions, I don't want to ruin it
Right now if I wear anything below it, all my clothes will smell like that too
I just saw a video of a guy say I can spray Vodka on it..
Could just let it air out a bit
Like outside? You think it would be enough? Its kinda strong like you can definitely smell it
Sun and fresh air can do a lot
Sun's gonna have to wait a few days.. idk where to put it in the mean time
You can’t just hang it up somewhere in your apartment?
I’d just hang it up and light a candle nearby tbh lol
I can hang it alone but I dont have candles
Thing is I have one more day to tell vinted if theres an issue or not.. and I don't see what could happen
I don't really wanna send it back
But pressing might cost me like 50 bucks
Mothball smell is not an issue for a return imo
If it's not raining just hang it outside.
Pressing lady told me it wouldnt help if the smell is in the fiber but maybe she just wants a new client idk
Told me she can wash it gently by hand with water and it will go away but the coat might shrink a few millimeters
I can do that for a few days but theres no sun until monday
You need the air as much as the sun.
I can start with just air I guess
Btw my mom told me it does not smell like mothballs, just 'old'
Yeah, as others have said that’s absolutely not a reason for return and frankly some ‘old’ smell with vintage items is kinda to be expected!
Well if its not wearable idk..
It would ruin any clothes I use below
And I can't put it in a the closet with other clothes or it will spread
Is it really THAT bad?
I doubt it! Vodka in a spray bottle is great at removing odour even persistent odour like from mothballs. And the more you wear it outside the less it will smell!
Man if someone returned something to me because it smelled old I would contest the shit out of that return
This coat could have been sitting in a closet for years
Give it a few days to air out and it should be fine.
A diluted vinegar spray is another option if you really cannot wait for some reason. Should be roughly 2pt water 1pt white vinegar
I suppose dry cleaning (if applicable) would work too
Unsurprising that secondhand clothing smells like things. You’ll be able to get the scent out :)
Pressings told me dry cleaning wont work for the smell
I don't mind as long it goes away. I'll try airing it out on a hanger outside first
Yeah, I’d definitely decline that return request!
Well guys I get the idea but I mean she could have told me. In its current state its definitely not wearable because everything I wear below will smell the same, and I dont wanna ruin a knitted pollover or something, same for a suit
Is this your first purchase from Vinted? If you look at other people's ads, you'll notice that almost no one describes the smell of an item, partly because it's somewhat subjective whether you find an odour off-putting, but also because most odours can be treated quite easily. Most odours will not transfer to other items of clothing, btw. Though, if you can't stand it, just sell it on.
No its not but for a coat like that yeah it is.
Problem is such coats kinda have to be dry washed and apparently it does not help with the smell
In any case tho you guys seem to think it can be fixed so Im most likely gonna keep it, leave it in the house until I come back next week and hang it in the sun for a few days or something
It really smells like if I put it in a closet, the whole closet smells the same in 3 days
I think the only time they should be required to describe the smell is if the garment smells of smoke. That's not just off-putting, but has a negative impact on health.
spraying it with vodka (as brique mentioned) or a white vinegar solution (as rawbert mentioned) are other options if the smell is strong enough that airing it out isn't an option
I'll keep it, try airing it out early next week, and then we will see
For now I can only leave it home somewhere not next to other clothes haha
I'm back home so its hanging outside in the sun and fresh air for now. I did it for 3 hours or so yesterday and more today. Cant tell the difference so far, I'll try to do it several days during the week today
