Have you noticed an uptick of merch collabs? Have you found yourself buying more merch recently? Share merch you've bought in the past year!
>In the last year, 13-39-year-olds in the U.S. who
purchased merch estimated they spent an
average of $168 per person. This equates to

I think merch can be super fun because it largely comes from outside the regular fashion space

Oh, yeah. They do drops maybe twice a year and they sell out real quick in general
yes and no - some of the recent collabs aimed at femmes (jimmy choo x sailor moon, most hello kitty collabs) were underwhelming
a lot of the buzzier mainstream collabs feel pretty lazy (like who thought people wanted a barbie toothbrush ahead of the barbie movie?)
tho i really loved the fendi x pokemon collab
Very valid, Collab stuff can be lowest common denominator
the what lol

sometimes! i’m trying to find some good shirts for the bands i’m interested in, but the other problem is a lot of merch-hunting is weeding through mountains of middling to poor quality stuff

i came for shampoo and walked away with that and my boy
NO WAIT THAT’S ADORABLE

I usually just go for band merch when I go to a concert, these two being these years purchases.

I think we're increasingly in an environment where people are looking for authenticity and an identity that's more than just buying into a brand - merch sometimes has that inscrutable quality about it where most people aren't going to understand it, but the 'right' people will recognise you're part of the same tribe as them. So I think it's cool where people are incorporating things that reference their other interests in their style, whether that be band tees, character charms/pins, or other references to media.
Unfortunately lots of merch looks like complete ass and more complex garments (e.g. any more than a t-shirt) tend to have quite a basic cut, so there's a bit of thought/curation required if you want to be someone who simultaneously cares about fashion and expressing their favourite media or other interests
I may be biased because I buy silly video game jackets

I bought the disco elysium jacket and love it but in general most merch has a seemingly disposable quality to it, whether due to poor materials or construction. I imagine most companies skimp out on quality to align better with the cost expectations of their audience or the fact that their audience will consume it simply due to being branded with the thing
Antwon casually whipping out one of the nicest gamer merch
I think most of the Loewe studio Ghibli stuff was nice but a bit basic
And most of it sold out, showing that there's definitely a market for expensive anime merch

This is a crazy amount of craftsmanship I'd never have expected for anime merch
I wasn't about to buy this sight unseen but the tasaki X chainsawman collab is another example of merch moving upmarket
