I would suggest to get some high quality Wool Trousers. You can find used ones relatively cheap on Vestiaire Collective, Ebay and sometimes even in your local vintage shops (depending on where you live). Good brands to search for are: Burberry, YSL, Loro Piana, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani. I often stumble across some really affordable cashmere stuff from Burberry (50€ for pants in very good condition). If you really want to get the most for your money, consider setting up filter lists and notifications and then lowball the sellers. Especially with older pants (older in means of date of production and not of how much it has been worn), I have often managed to get some hefty discounts from them.

If you live in a really cold area, then it's really likely that you will more than just Wool pants in order to feel really warm and comfortable. I would suggest you to get atleast one or two pieces of thermal underwear / baselayers for the colder days. One day you it will get colder than you might expect it to be and then you will be glad that you have bought them. They are also not expensive either. You can probably find ones for a really low price in military surplus stores, atleast that is the case here in Europe.

My friend owns these and they felt thick and warm: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=513217012&vid=1&tid=brns000051#pdp-page-content. But the fabric composition is bad so I don't know if I'd recommend them. Still, I'd look for pants similar to this but 100% wool.

If you like Sweatpants, I can suggest you Vollebak. They have pants called 100 Year Sweatpants. These have 3 layers and are extremely warm and the outer layer is even fire proof to some extent. They are extremely warm, especially the first version, and are made to withstand heavy rain and snow. Their quality is outstanding and I believe that these may be a bit overkill though. Their original price is around 500 - 600€ depending on the version but Vollebak currently has lots of discounts. You can probably get them for around 80 - 110€ depending on the version. They are currently destocking and planning to become more of a mainstream brand, which is why everything is so cheap now. Here you can see their Email newsletter: https://milled.com/vollebak They had such incredible discounts weekly.

I'm sorry to disagree so vehemently but I'm not sure why someone living in NYC would pay so much for sweatpants with such an insane fabric composition and whose main selling point seems to be that they are fire and abrasion resistant?

You're paying a premium for fabric that is blended with fire resistant modacrylic and aramid and that is doubly coated to make them abrasion resistant. That's ridiculously overkill for almost anybody who isn't literally a firefighter. You'd be much better off buying a nice pair of heritage cotton sweatpants.

These pants are mainly made for survival / outdoor people. They are extremely durable, which is why you can easily wear such pants daily for years and still have no wear and tear. These can literally last a decade and have a really low price in relation to the quality and longetivity. With certain special promotions you were able to get them for 60€ each when getting multiple of them. You wouldn't really pay a premium when getting them for such a low price. There are literally cheaply made pants from GAP that are slightly more expensive than that

These things are tanks, itchy but well built @eggtart! you into workwear at all? Carhartt and dickies (and other brands) sell cotton flannel lined versions of their canvas work pants, extremely popular here in the midwest and most of them will fade like jeans with wear https://www.carhartt.com/product/B111/loose-fit-washed-duck-flannel-lined-utility-work-pant Also, monitaly does a really cool wool military style cargo pant. You can sometimes find these secondhand or on sale for a decent price.

You can always make such wool softer and less scratchy by letting it soak in vinegar, putting it in a freezer for a day or by using lanolin. Especially old wool clothes may lose their grease over time and therefore become scratchy. Regreasing it a little can really do wonders! This is also often the case with Military Surplus gear as they tend to be older. :gigachad:
Spuck
Spuck•2mo ago
I just put that shit on :gigachad: but great tip
thomas
thomas•2mo ago
Don’t soak your wool in vinegar or lanolin. Vinegar won’t do anything and lanolin will make it more insulating but will barely make it less itchy, if it does at all. If it’s itchy now and you use lanolin it will still bother you. Also I need to point out that it’s not the “wool grease” (lol) that makes wool soft but the thickness of the fibers, which no amount of lanolin or vinegar will change. If by wool grease you mean the fat secreted by the animal, that just makes it more or less water resistant, it doesn’t affect the softness.
Swag
Swag•2mo ago
Matter of fact, wool can lose its natural fat layer over time, especially when being washed often or when being heavily processed. This can make the wool dry and itchy. The fibers of the wool become harder, which makes it scratch more. You can feel this the most when having wool that has lots of fiber breakage. Obviously it can't fix bad quality wool and make it as soft as cashmere but it still can have a significant impact, especially when buying older clothes like you do when buying something military surplus. Using Vinegar on wool changes the pH level of the wool and makes it more acidic, bringing it back to its natural level. This closes the wool's cuticles again, making it smoother. The production of wool and the washing can actually open the cuticles and make it feel more scratchy. This mostly depends on the way the wool has been processed. Older gear, especially the ones that were created for the masses are the most likely to have been produced in a way that leaves the wool's cuticles open. Vinegar would not do anything when buying a new high quality wool sweater but when you have something that has been washed wrong, has a bad quality or something that is old in general but not worn once, then Vinegar can actually do quite a lot. :xdcrying:
Spuck
Spuck•2mo ago
so just put that shit on?
thomas
thomas•2mo ago
just put that shit on man What precisely is the relation between the pH level of wool and whether the cuticles are “closed” or “open”? How does that work? Evidently you’ve just lightly paraphrased some article you found on Google without understanding it, and conflated different things. It’s just not true that wool’s scratchiness comes from whether the cuticles are open or closed. It comes from the size of the fibers, like I said, which can’t be changed! If you’re sensitive to scratchy wool you should just not buy it instead of trying a bunch of pseudoscientific methods to make it softer, which even if they work will make a marginal difference. The reason the milsurp pants are scratchy isn’t because they’ve been washed wrong or treated poorly it’s because of the kind of wool they use to make them.
Swag
Swag•2mo ago
I have actually never read this article prior to that nor had I made the effort to look up for information before writing my message. I am not a native English speaker and rather prefer do to my research in my native language. I had already dealt with this topic multiple times and therefore from memory. Nonetheless this information is not wrong and more of a strongly simplified explanation of it. The pH level of wool can make a relatively big impact on it's characteristics (which is mainly important for felting). 🥸

I don't care man it's just bad, dumb advice and I'm not inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt since you came in here to tell someone they should buy awful looking, $445 firefighter pants.
raisinpie
raisinpie•2mo ago
since your information is correct, do you have sources where someone could educate themselves?
Swag
Swag•2mo ago
Well, you are wrong with that. The scratchiness of wool is actually influenced by multiple factors. The main factor is obviously the thickness of the wool fibers. Like I have already said, you can't magically make the lowest quality wool feel like cashmere but it's still possible to make it less scratchy depending on the type of type of wool and the way it has been processed. 🤣 Honestly, I am not going to search out sources just to back off such simple information. Just use Google and earch for 5 min. You should find quite a lot of sources that state literally the same. If you are wanting to do that you can also just ask any LLM model and they should give you a similar answer :xdcrying:

Please explain precisely how vinegar "closes the wool's cuticles again" and why "open" cuticles make wool itchy?
jawntanamo_bae
jawntanamo_bae•2mo ago
I have nothing to add here besides some people are allergic to lanolin so that is an additional reason why wool can be scratchy Adding lanolin to wool to make it less irritating is insanely stupid
Swag
Swag•2mo ago
Please elaborate why you think that way. With lanolin you are able to restore the natural fat layer. Some wool detergents can also do this to some extend but not as good as lanolin does. Conditioner without parabens and sulfates (these can dry out the wool) can also do the job for people that are heavily allergic to lanolin 👍

Fleece and flannel lined jeans seem pretty common on eBay. I have a pair from LL Bean in going to try on today. I also see listings for Wrangler, Carhartt. Warm wool pants can be tricky to search for, because a lot of the results for "wool pants" are dress pants. You need to be clever with search terms. Try "Woolrich wool pants", "wool hunting pants", "wool 5 pocket", "thick wool pants"

If you like the looser baggier fit, look for older pleated wool flannels and woolens on ebay, you can get amazing pieces for $50-100 before negotiating. Heavyweight cords are also a great option, 8 wale is a beautiful sweet spot
