Styling feedback: t-shirt, denim jacket, coat, denim trousers

So I decided to try and replicate an image as best I could again, this time an image from Popeye. I liked this outfit and I tried to see if I could replicate it with what I've got. What works here and what doesn't?

Oooh nice image to go off of. I like that the formal coat subverts the double denim Americana that RL is famous for I think you got the double denim down but the inside shirt doesn’t really scream prep like the RL sweater does. For some reason the color scheme gives me metal vibes. Coat is nice! But I think a knee length coat would be more appropriate here
artvandelayimporting
Yeah the shirt doesn’t really work here. What makes the reference photo work is that the american flag sweater is such iconic ralph piece so I think unless you have something similar you’d be better off with a plain shirt char is right about the coat and tuck tuck tuck!

So the main change I made for this was the shirt, I changed it to this darker, more plain shirt. I also made sure to tuck it in (I posted the first message and then realised it wasn't tucked in). As for the coats, I don't have anything that is longer.
artvandelayimporting
damn I think lose the over coat here and this is just a really cool western look belt and boots would do wonders
Sam
SamOP3mo ago
:happy_thonk: I'll try it out.

I used the Converse boots I've got, they were as close to a boot as I could get.
Sam
SamOP3mo ago
Apart from the Barbour's.

SamOP3mo ago
But yeah, that's what I got for boots :linkWhat: How is it looking now?
artvandelayimporting
don't love the cut of the jeans with the shoes
shuvi
shuvi3mo ago
imo the cut on the pants is too slim for boots
artvandelayimporting
yeah
shuvi
shuvi3mo ago
And same color denim jacket on jeans is ehh
artvandelayimporting
this part I disagree with
shuvi
shuvi3mo ago
Definitely sort of just a style choice I don’t prefer it but it is a thing
artvandelayimporting
think some straight fit jeans would do you a world of good though levis 501s or 505s
Sam
SamOP3mo ago
artvandelayimporting
yeah too slim to achieve the looks you're after imo
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain3mo ago
I would also explore belt buckles You can check belts at thrift stores and stuff to see if the buckle is removable and you can snag some SICK hardware online for cheap etsy, ebay, ect
shuvi
shuvi3mo ago
You’re gonna want more of a straight cut with a more relaxed fit Either that or get sleeker boots
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain3mo ago
Think the hard thing is your clothes just might be too slim for the vibe you want
shuvi
shuvi3mo ago
More of a service booot would be better
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain3mo ago
I do think it is workable with what you have. Might do well to introduce some more contrast to the fit But jacket might be too slip to have a denim under it
Sam
SamOP3mo ago
Yeah I could try to get a pair of 501s not now though :linkBow: maybe I'll ask Santa Claus :linkSanta:
awburkey
awburkey3mo ago
do not also do not
Sam
SamOP3mo ago
ok i don't even know what those 2 boots are lol
awburkey
awburkey3mo ago
"sleeker" is just an adjective here but the root of the issue is you're wearing really slim/skinny jeans and that's just not the vibe in the RL pic. Service boots are a classic style of military boot mainly originating from the boondocker style. It's become the "default loadout" boot for a lot of people and I frankly think they're just really boring and any other type of would would be better or more interesting in every single fit.
Sam
SamOP3mo ago
Ah, ok
awburkey
awburkey3mo ago
Particularly the "sleek" service boots with a slim toe box I think a boring Boondockers are cool in a workwear/milsurp vibe, but many folks wear service boots as part of a boring office drone type fit so I just kinda don't like them anymore
awburkey
awburkey3mo ago
^^ good vibes
sharloy
sharloy3mo ago
That’s the inspiration I think bootcut would work but be less versatile If I were to get another Jean I’d listen to those above and get a 501s or 550s (the ones I’d get personally) But boot cut would probably bring out the most authentic version of what you’re going for I think work boots work in this instant but yeah beans is right there’s kinda a bad rep when people wear them with a dress shirt and chinos
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain3mo ago
Do you live near any thrift stores I bet you could find some jeans you like in just one day of shoppin around You seem to be cravin more classic styles and vibes
sharloy
sharloy3mo ago
Wait actually Ur in the UK Don’t get Levi’s They’re super overpriced
Sam
SamOP3mo ago
yeah :linkBow:
sharloy
sharloy3mo ago
Honestly any Jean is fine just make sure they’re straight or relaxed
Sam

late reply, but if you still want to stick to that original inspo a much longer coat is important to the look bc it helps blend the denim jacket into the fit as a layering piece making the two outer layers similar lengths throws off the cohesion peacoats already fit quite bulky so stacking more makes it a bit messy
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain3mo ago
yeah maybe some UK heads can help out
Soup

lots availble for under £10

Soup is right with vinted thats a good shout
Soup

550's also look to be available for similar prices. I find vinted usually has stuff for a lower cost than ebay does, and remember you can make offers on vinted as well so you can get really good bargains there sometimes

Yeah I don’t own a peacoat specifically for this reason That’s a lie I own one That’s too short I got from club Monaco
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain3mo ago
feel like england is made up of 70% long wool coats. those coats are load bearing
I'm Lagging
I'm Lagging3mo ago
biggest lesson is to never copy brands directly if you don't have to there's bound to be other camel double breasteds out there in the sub 300 range not to shit on PRL but they're not exactly at the forefront of making hyper unique designs :boi:

Soup

Vintage or charity shops good like dang says cause you can try on. There are actually quite a lot of vintage stores on Etsy as well so you can search on there. Sorry meant to reply to you @Saltbender
Saltbender
Saltbender3mo ago
Sure sounds good The last time I tried on vinted I went big shoulder good bcos I want drop shoulder but the fit was horrendous lol
SteezeTrain
SteezeTrain3mo ago
yeah especially these older coats kinda gotta be tried on in person unless you really trust someone's photos and measurments
Soup
Soup3mo ago
I got extremely lucky buying a balmacaan from eBay but the seller accepted returns and I'd been looking since last winter, sometimes you need to be patient depending on the size you're looking for Also actually you could look at some milsurp stuff. They could have some wool great coats, places like blighty militaria I can't think of any others at the moment

👏 BUY 👏 SECOND 👏 HAND 👏 All the looks you are going for will be very very achievable with secondhand pieces at ludicrously lower prices I have maybe 8 long coats, 4 of which are wool, all of which were less than 50 dollars This an experimental phase for you, limit your losses and maximize your upside, if you’re gonna buy something, buy a decent version cheap, the way to do that is secondhand If you want a camel overcoat, don’t even bother looking at the retail websites There’s no point you won’t get anything out of that Just start looking on the secondhand sites and save a bunch of listings and compare them Post them here if you need second opinions We can help you see what the differences are Over time you’ll learn the differences yourself You will get SO much more out of sifting through a ton of different versions of the same thing than you would from seeing the one 3000 dollar offering from PRL

But yeah, I'll go second hand for this Again, not atm while I'm on my cop freeze :xdcrying: I can't say for sure but I'm most likely going to stick with the cop freeze for the whole month yeah :linkBow:
Soup
Soup2mo ago
I think this is a good approach for you. Really spend some time looking through the inspo and solidifying what you like. It will give you a much more directed idea of the items you want/you feel are missing from your wardrobe. And of course use the inspo to try out new ideas with the things you have currently
Sam
SamOP2mo ago
Yeah Atm I'm going though an issue of the Popeye magazine using one of the links from #Fashion inspiration books? I've still got some pages to view so I'm not done there 👍
Sam
SamOP2mo ago
:linkCool: So my cop freeze didn't last too long :xd: but I was able to find a pair of 501s and some boot trainers to go with them in a second hand store.

awburkey
awburkey2mo ago
I like the silhouette a lot more, but I wouldn't say it has ~anything in common with the inspo pics at the top
Sam
SamOP2mo ago
yeah, for the last image, i was trying to go for this but yeah, I do agree that it doesn't really have anything in common with the inspiration pics It does look nice though so I'm fine with it
sharloy
sharloy2mo ago
Hmm I would consider hemming the pants
Sam
SamOP2mo ago
i could try that out, yeah What about the shoes? Do they work here?
sharloy
sharloy2mo ago
I like them in general but they don’t align with your inspo
Sam

bishopcorrigan2mo ago
If you want to go in this western/americana direction you really need an actual boot You’re not locked into that direction though It’s fine to just be something you’re trying out
Sam
SamOP2mo ago
Yeah, I'm trying out stuff atm. It seems to be the direction I'm heading towards at the moment. :linkThink: What type of boot? So far those boot trainers I've used haven't really cut it

As always, secondhand is the move here Idk what the market is like in the UK but here you can get a pair of decent boots secondhand for like 50-100 dollars very consistently

Disclaimer that some of these may be out of date, (and a lot of the brand links are very US focused so don't get too caught up on the different brand recommendations) - but have you read through these substack articles in the guides channel? https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1294193254673154059/1295168181991637023 Might be useful in terms of learning about different types of boot, how formality levels work and how to pick up details like whether something is an Oxford, a Derby, a workboot, captoe, brogue, wingtip, slim vs chunky, identifying different 'last' types and shapes (round toe, square, almond, chisel, etc etc) The world of boots and leather shoes is huuuge, and it's mostly small details that make the difference of whether something is 'good' or not Takes a lot of time just to absorb and internalise all those details so you really do just gotta take it slow and just do a lot of looking and comparing I also suspect that what you've got currently is absolutely fine for now and you don't need to be buying boots for a long while! Until you're absolutely sure exactly what you want specifically and not risking wasting loads of money on something you'll dislike once you learn more about your tastes :) (believe me, we've all been there)
