You must be at least This Tall to Ride- - Topic of the day 10/2/24
Before any short kings, queens and GNC monarchs say anything this isn't a height-related TOTD. Is there anything in clothing or fashion that you feel is out of your reach, be it due to lack of access or knowledge or some other factor (again, try to avoid physical traits here)? If

Rick, I simply lack the vibes that strong
Good pants and its a skill issue
I brought a yohji suit in the hopes of wearing some yohji and discovered that I am actually apparently too tall and skinny.
"out of your reach" fucking hell lmao
How the fuck am I supposed to afford made to measure custom Geoffrey B Small suits
Big, wide n' drapey fits. Not compatible with current wardrobe and I have nowhere I can go to try on fits before buying.
The I have nowhere to try on fits is a pretty big issue, yeah.
Makes getting into new stuff a bit of a journey.
I only have so many years left, I can't start again :nooooo:
Just inject yourself with the blood of your 18 year old child like any normal person /j
I don’t got no money
really wide baggy jeans like Geth - having a 37in waist makes the silhouette awkward and doesn't work for me
i am not avoiding physical traits as instructed
Jewelry always seems like a prohibitively expensive thing for me even though my fits are incomplete without it
just hard to rationalize spending on physically insignificant pieces
I struggled with that. A couple vintage pieces and a couple new and I wouldn't go back now. I imagine it's similar to tattoos. They feel like identity defining pieces more than items of clothing.
Yeah i definitely feel like there's more of an incentive to really seek out pieces that "speak to you" since they're not really modular like clothing is
ie can't really change the vibes of it as much as say wearing a shirt with different pairings
this gets easier if u think of the jewelry as equipment that you never take off
Pretty much everything tbh. I was getting a suit for the first time today and I thought the shirt the clerk was letting me try on was missing sleeve buttons because it was just an test shirt for figuring out my size. Forgot entirely that cufflinks were a thing.
Generally I find it hard to find pants that are the right length. (I'm short so I'd need a 28 length) The very odd time I've seen a 28 length pant out in the wild I've dived at it.
no there's just things i want to do and things i don't
oh and also this lol
Find a tailor or an alterations place to hem normal pants for you.
The place I bought the suit from actually rang the tailor and told them I was coming. I ended up getting the pants hemmed at a discount and within an hour. The guy at the suit shop was really nice.
Physical shops to try that shit on in are a constant issue where I live, I am at the mercy of inconsistent size charts and expensive returns :xdcrying:
the one saving grace I'll give to ssense is that they cover returns to actually let you try stuff
their size references are still hot dogshit though
if money was no object, my entire wardrobe would be Brut (Paris) and Scott Fraiser Collection. But alas i remain an Ebay warrior
and I’m a short king so there
🤐
I’ve been curious about Rick Owens for over a decade but I can’t imagine giving up food to fit in those slender silhouettes plus they are pricey. I’ve also always wanted to transition into traditional premium wool and linen suits but those are expensive and very hard to get into.
Your fits are easily some of the coolest, freshest takes on menswear I’ve seen in a hot minute, and you’re constantly experimenting I feel like. Money may stop you from buying like…designer shit, but it def doesn’t stop you from exploring the same themes those designers explore
My two cents
Pun intended
legit it's being poor for the most part
rick goes big fwiw. ik it's usually modeled a specific way but it's a lot more size friendly than that.
yeah size doesn't really matter unless you're only after the spray-on pants look
most of his pants are elasticized and easy to wear
Thank you! It’s the osmosis of being near Charlie. I’m not super bothered about not getting designer stuff tbh, there’s very few things I yearn for, unfortunately the things I do want are absurdly out of budget
I somewhat do feel limited to be honest by living in a pretty tiny capital-C Conservative UK city where there are few other people my age and seldom fewer seemingly into fashion. It makes experimenting with anything "out of the ordinary" feel like a bit of an exercise in avoiding incredulous looks (or being hate crimed)
I do often find myself feeling the urge to move back to a bigger cooler city almost solely for fashion purposes :xd:
A lot of that is internalised self-consciousness/ fear of standing out too much tho for sure
I want to get into some like relaxed oversized tailoring, but haven’t been able to get over the idea of “too dressed up” in my head, Seth’s ziggy suit got me thinking again tho
It is mostly mental but there's absolutely some situations I wouldn't be around in certain fits. If I was back in my hometown I'd 100% expect to at the very least get verbally abused in some of my current fits. Late at night around the wrong pubs / clubs even in the capital city you're painting a target on your back. Just the reality, ugly as it is.
Getting OT but living in an even somewhat fashionable city is such a blessing
I always notice in bigger cities how much more interesting ppl are dressed.
Apart from that sleeve lenghth is a recurring issue. Sleeves too short is the story of my life lol
Sleeves too long is mine ☯️
The other thing is that I find it hard to explore really oversized stuff because im already relatively big and just getting clothes two or three sizes larger does not seem to really work.
I guess because at a certain point lager sizes mostly accomodate additional width but not additional height. But im unsure, maybe its just a skill issue
It’s definitely easier if you’re in the middle range to try stuff on either side as far as fit, but there should still be stuff that works for you
Unfortunately it might be more designer level stuff that’s exaggerated by design and modeled on tall people to begin with
OTOH being tall makes a bunch of cool Japanese stuff unavailable, which I am not at all mad about kapital century denim
Move to Liverpool pal, sure theres plenty of hate crimes still but the general vibe is great
I simply lack the swag to pull off most interesting clothes. Best I can pull off is 'does your wife pick out your clothes?'
Near top of my list if I can find a job there haha
If someone ever asked me if my partner dressed me I would dump my partner immediately
Also I don’t have a partner, this is hypothetical
Jawn could never be a wife guy
I would like to be 😭
Sometimes it's ok to give the wife the credit even if I do spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about my inoffensive wardrobe
I could never let someone take credit for my extremely normal fits
Having had the opportunity to try quite a few aesthetics over the years, I can confidently say that I feel like I could wear most stuff at least somewhat comfortably. That said, there’s some vibes that I just cannot get down with. Mostly cuz some stuff just doesn’t feel very me.
Most of what holds me back from ever trying something is finances. I cannot afford to try every single thing that strikes my fancy, so I tend to go for stuff that will work what I already own. Which means that even if my wardrobe can shift over time, it’s usually very slowly
Ya there’s not really anything I’m scared of per sé but some stuff isn’t necessarily my vibe. For instance, you would probably never catch me wearing Stone Island
Simply believe in yourself Rej
Your fit battle fit with the vest thing was great
I say things like 'thats just how the turn tables' irl, I'm not pulling off yohji
I'm very comfortable with who I am, I just recognize there are brands and aesthetics that are incongruous with me
that's right you're putting on yohji because it'll look great on you instead of taking it off
Stop using anti yohji yamamoto language, instead of saying “that’s how the turn tables” say “black is modest and arrogant at the same time”
I still think about speccing into full tilt techwear, Acronym everything, but it's definitely financially out of reach by a wide margin. If I win the lottery, I won't say so, but there will be signs...
Yeah. I know that there is stuff out there, but the barrier of entry to designer lvl stuff is a bit higher. Eventually if I might find the time i might try that.
Honestly, I think the single most limiting factor to me is time. My job is too exhausting to pick up an new somewhat demanding hobby like embroidery or sewing right now, which I would really like to do eventually to do more DIY stuff.
As someone who's owned a full kit, it's not worth it at all - Arc'teryx shells and acronym pants is the way
I don’t think so? The least accessible things I would say are more durable clothing - like it’s accessible sure but the price jumps. Forget ethics of fast fashion for a moment just getting a shirt that won’t start getting holes in the first wash.
Oh yeah that's an issue for me too. Something will be too tight in the chest with good sleeves, so then I size up but then the sleeves are now too long.
Arc supplies law enforcement, homie, fuck that noise
No ethical consumption etc
We’ve both bought plenty of shooting gear from horrible companies let’s not be hypocritical
Okay that’s fair that’s fair
I do hate that they push themselves as pretty left leaning while doing that though
Patagonia does the same shit, it’s maddening
Lol i was about to say
Patagonia is even worse
Peace and love and nature and war
And a ton of people (non law enforcement) also buy the arc LEAF gear 😭
I think we should circle back to heights in discord names
To actually answer the topic (6’1” btw) i feel some kind of like passive ache over all of the beautiful vintage garments that just through the passage of time ill never really get to experience. Especially for the makers whos stuff mostly exists in private collections or museums
Think of all the amazing armani or tommy nutter or like mcqueen that youll never be able to touch or try on
Currently cost, I've been having to re-buy the basics every six months for the past two years due to weight loss (~100 lbs/~45 kg) which hasn't left a ton in the budget to buy statement or more adventurous pieces. It's a good problem to have, but frustrating at the same time. Thankfully I think i've hit near the end, so hoping to save up now and explore some stuff that has been out of my price range every so often.
The upside is that I've developed a new love of thrifitng and hunting, sort of what I like I do for vinyl
this is a great answer but the (6'1 btw) is fucking sending me so hard
In general, because of my background and personality, I cannot pull off any element of streetwear, full stop.
I am just too square to get anywhere near it.
you are clearly in the street here https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1287328726375465062
Lol, fair enough!
That's definitely me playing tough
Adjacent to this: I also feel some kind of passive ache about all the available vintage garments im never gonna wear bc they are fucking tiny.
Though im happy for short monarchs of all genders who get to feast
Ziggy is literally the best thing happening to fashion atm
So damn expensive though
Plus Ziggy Chen is such a fun brand name to say
Is there something I can read/watch to know why they’re so good
Yeah you can look up the content Lucentement makes about them and similar brands. They put out really great stuff
In a nutshell my point is that Ziggy sits at the forefront of a huge new wave of Asian (mostly Chinese/Taiwanese) designers who use the oversized and destructured silhouettes of the anti fashion movement to revisit their clothing heritage. It’s like Yohji meets Carpe Diem meets the Great Wall of China. I love it
You see anything about CHIAHUNG SU Pesty? Got turned onto them yesterday by a local shop. TW designer that takes fabric development to a new level (from what I was able to feel)
Just look at the outstanding work of Ziggy Chen, Uma Wang, Peng Tai, Chiahung Su
And their likes
Something’s going on
Yes I visit them when they come for PFW. The fabrics are spectacular
Thanks I’ll look them up
Formal wear. I WFH so there is almost no occasion to ever dress up
i don't want to link the ethan essay about this but i wfh and just dress up anyway
part of it was to get into the mindset of work vs leisure time and part of it is to reinforce the idea that those are things i like wearing
