In-Groups: Do your outside interests influence your dress? How so? - Topic of the day 9/5/24
Style acts as a visual language, and different pieces or ways of dress can place you amongst a community, or indicate a specific interest.
What does your style say about you? What communities do you draw inspiration from? Does that match your interests or personality? Are you saying what you want to say?

Pic goes hard, is that Speed?
ahegao hoodie etc etc
I work in the construction sphere so work wear serves a fashion and a workplace purpose. I also like hiking and outdoors so there's a bit of gorp thrown in there time to time as well.
Mostly I'm an unoriginal dork so I dress like an unoriginal dork
I run a fighting games group so I wear absolutely no 'gamer' attire at all because ew, brother, eww
I’ve never been good about incorporating outside interests into my clothes because I always feel a little costumey if I go too far in one direction.
But I love it when u can see somebody and know what they’re about
Pretty relevant picture as i grew up in my local hardcore scene so a lot of my early style was influenced by what i saw the bands i looked up to wearing, primarily docs, vans, leather jackets, worn tees, etc. More to do with how they're styled than the items themselves. Getting into Rick was an evolution from that and the way i wear stuff is still heavily influenced by the music scene. Nowadays i also take a lot of influence from classic biker culture (not harley dads) in regards to denim and outerwear which my uncles wore a lot of when i was young.
I'd say the area of my personality that my style isn't at all aligned with is my queer identity. It's tricky being an amab nb person when i almost always gravitate towards traditional masc looks.
Conversely, very cool to see someone like dressed v soft at a hardcore show, or some guy in a Tsunami tee knows about jazz etc
queer gymrat tabletop & video gamer recovered midwestern hardcore emo kpop enjoyer ahegao hoodie
I think some of that comes thru more than others, but I actively pull from all of em
i have a lot of thoughts on this but the short answer is the varied way i dress reflects the fact i have a lot of seemingly disparate interests and inspirations
bad sam! no!
2 ahegao hoodie mentions
Hard day
@ian I feel that last part re: masc amab nb shit but recent experiences have me feeling both queer and masc so ig I wanna say that shit is valid & I hope you get to feel it soon too
You can tell from the cat hair on my sweater than i'm heavily influenced by my hobby of kissing my sweet little baby
I'm in tech/finance and actively try to dress like I'm not
I've been trying to add a little bit of spice to every masc outfit lately whether it's a tiny bit of makeup or a few extra rings
just a little touch of 'oh this person might not be a boring dude'
I work in music and very very rarely wear anything that looks like the scene i work in, or merch from any of the bands I work for or don't. But I don't think its because I want to lean away from it more just not my thing style wise. even though I do love the music and scene around it.
FWIW there are a few of your fits that stick in my mind because when you posted em I was like "gay" (positive)
Like I didn't even have to search it was just there and queer and v well done.
<3
A couple trans girls I know go to hardcore shows in dresses and spin kick the shit out of the pit, it's terrifying/amazing
i know i made a flippant remark recently to the contrary but i have been wearing handkerchiefs as an homage to hanky code
Yeah @ian idk ur grooming and I’m sure the way u speak n carry urself just like doesn’t read not queer yknow
not literally because i am not a red girlie but srill
Like uh. Nobody thought Castro clones were not queer
Anyway
I dress boring because I’m interested in boring things
and on a broader level i think i'm typically going to be judged by my primary groups (black, queer, black and queer) and that informs a lot of my dressing - referencing fresh prince or the birdcage or james baldwin or things of the sort
i enjoy hiking and did sneak a few "hiker trash" moments into #waywt but imo there's a separation between actual gear suitable for the outdoors and the stylized take on it in pop culture. choosing one or the other is an effective signal based on the audience though it can call into question the idea of authenticity
but most of my nerd adjacent hobbies have either no dress code and/or i am okay with being out of place visually
I feel the amab enby who dresses masc-ish pain as well.
Anyway, the most i draw from subcultures i belong to is that most of my graphic tees are merch from some kind of metal band.
Well, that and wearing tweed/corduroy jackets in winter when teaching latin to my students. Gotta uphold tradition! Its basically workwear.
Thinking on it, I guess the main hobby I have right now is running, and definitely don't considering any of that sort of clothing into my everyday wardrobe. All my gear is largely..functional (and mostly old sportswear that's beat to hell).
never one to wear watches but ever since i started running been rocking my Garmin ever since
I like watches, but I hate wearing the Garmin when I'm not running. Feels like it's stalking me.
Punk shows, diy and house shows especially. I love the way people dress and express themselves, both the 70s-80s simple styles and the new over the top stuff. It has made me more carefree in dressing. I love the intersection of (edgy, diy, distressed) and my personal fashion interests (interesting fabric, thoughtful, earthy).
What fgs?
Hmm also I'm not sure. There are certain influences I have from media. Like the only thing I could think of was getting a cropped jacket because I liked Rock from Mark of the Wolves. But other than that I primarily wear mostly black with a mix of white/blue/gray sometimes.
Terry Bogard's MotW bomber fit is classic
the day i figure out how to make my psychonauts shirt a banger is the day i finally get to post it
i love love love wearing my fangamer stuff
mostly because it’s stuff that’s artist-done and they credit their artists and i love it
so if i can wear my interests and also wear some sick prints, yeah i will
i’m still plotting a fit for my insert coin paladin sukajan
that fit’s gonna go nuclear (pos)
i’ve also been slowly attempting to build a fishing vibes stash
because as it happens i both really enjoy fishing and i also like fish
Everything really, I'm mostly a Tekken man myself.
Kazuya is a hypebeast
Honestly there are entire brands built around fishing fits, like Daiwa pier 39 and Irie Fishing Club, can be really cool
yeah i do love a good fishing vest
my big concern about em tho is trying to find one that has tiny enough armholes for my little sticks
Im a scrawny, lanky boy and just bought a random one for five quid that fits pretty well
usually i try on men’s vests and the arm holes are ginormous 😔
Fishing vests kinda should be
the expectation is you'll be wearing layers under
also true
its fun to make connections when it makes sense (like I love rocking a rugby jersey cuz it brings me back to childhood) but I don't really make an effort. idk that I would be in the discord if I had an organic in person subculture/style community
I like to combine French chore coats and double knee Carhartt pants when I am toiling away in my local factory (graphic design studio)
i'm pretty entrenched in my local punk/diy scene and i think that's had a big influence on how i dress, these past years i've leaned more into that sort of ratty punk style. this is only tangential but i think that the scene has had pretty fundamental influence on me, listening to the music i made in before i started going to shows compared to now it's night and day.
it'a funny though since the punk style I go for i see more in the oldheads and less in the younger up and rising segment of the scene
im much more inspired by the old guys in ripped jeans and ratty shirts than the kids in bondage pants lol
i think my hobbies pretty much have nothing to do w/ my style but they do reflect my sense of gender to a degree, though unintentionally i guess
honestly it's peak
not sure if this is relevant because i don't know anything about fashion, but i want my ideal style to be pretty colorful
i want my style to remind me that exploring and playing around is what i need to focus on
plus i never really cared about gender stereotypes and i don't know what i am so exploring that through fashion will be fun
I wear crochet stuff to justify my yarn hoarding habit
It’s a gang called speed babyyyyy
Most of my tees are from local brands of my friends, tattoo artists and bands that I wanna support.
