What do you think of this type of shoe?
I want to get some kind of derby that isn't too dressy, something I could wear casually while out and about in autumn before boots become necessary and early spring before I can switch to sneakers and loafers. I've been eyeing this pair from Clarks:

Am I right to even call it a derby or would the technical designation be "low boot", and what's the MFAD hivemind's opinion on chunky soles and round toes like this? Acceptable or dress sneakers-like? I also have a pair of Batcombe Ties ordered already, I'm thinking I'll also order the Lane Strides, try on both and have pics to compare.

Batcombe ties for comparison
These look a bit „old man“ - like and not in the best way I think. As far as chunky derbies goes Solovair has some nice options. You could also check out Norwegian split toes, you might like them.
I like the doc martens brown leather derby too
Hmm
Like these?

Oh yeah, these actually look not bad
I see
What's the main quality that makes them old man - is it the round toe in particular?
It’s a mix of the overly bulbous toe, and the heavy padding, I suppose.
got it
I think I'll try the 1461s recommended by the other guy
I think the Clarks in particular aren't chunky enough and that's why they may look like an "old man" shoe
It’s the padding and overall shape imo. Not the toe specifically but the proportions and such
Need some derbies like this
I ordered a pair of these “desert derby” shoes. Might be dressier than you prefer? Crown Northampton
these are actually really nice, but a bit outside my budget, the martens are probably a better fit for me
Makes sense! I like those too
also I'm not sure if the raw exposed leather (?) on the edges isn't a moisture magnet
looks cool though
Fortunately the climate is pretty mild where I am!
If you’re thinking of getting a pair of Clarks these have a more contemporary silhouette and a lugged sole so could be worth checking out (suede not leather fyi) https://www.clarks.com/en-nl/desert-rock-lo/26178198-p
Raw edge is fine. Most boots typically leave leather edges raw
