minecraft server on a raspi!!!
hi all, im looking forward to hosting a minecraft server on my raspberry pi 5 - 4 core 2.6GHz, 8GBs ram, aarch64 (ARM) architecture. i have full ssh and ftp access, anything ill need.
I want to host a server with some server side modifications (not mods per say)
but things like terralith and some other stuff like that that just imrpove the vanilla experience, and dont really alter the core minecraft.
Its gonna be a 24/7 open anarchy server for some of my friends, around 10-15 people at it's peak.
does anyone have experience with setting up fabric or forge on linux?
ideally i want to have a docker container running for this. can anyone give me tips to jumpstart it?
thanks

@1who¡ssus?
👋 so your intention isn't hosting modded servers no?
hmmm
i do
want some mods
like terralith
and some
basic
Iirc terralith is a datapack
ahh
i see
Datapacks tend to be heavy
aside that i dont really want to have any SS mods
Due to them being often badly optimized
afaik distant horizons and sodium run on the fabric engine, and are client-side correct?
You should check all the software you have available for fabric vs what have you available for paper
Yes
Since your server tries to be lighter I wouldn't use forge
What version btw?
latest
1.21
oh wait
chunky is also a datapack?
Mhm, mod support for latest versions can have lots of variations. I mean you'll find plenty
No
It's available as a mod and plugin
welll i dont really want anything much, its just gonna be fun raids on eachother and shit haha (its gonna end in blood most likely)
setup.md

We're setup.md, the Minecraft administration wiki, written by enthusiasts and targeted to the novice.
damn thats a nice domain name
ou i see the pregen resources
Good practises are generally to pregen your world, use aikars flags for your server startup, use as many optimisation mods as possible if running modded
yes that is good
Endorsed by admincraft too
Indeed
i see, im probably not gonna do SS mods, only datapacks i think, and i could pregen the world and that should be fine
5kx5k seems reasonable
even 2k^2 seems fine imo
I'd go the paper way tbh
5000 by 5000 square?
i like paper
yeah
yeah
That's small lol
well it is a humble beginning haha
can i add more later?
Yeaa
well then if i need to ill probably add it
But I'd go big if storage isn't an issue
15k X 15k lol
to be honest with you... it is hosted on an sd card.. before i get my hands on an nvme adapter haha
But hey if you start small you'll be able to force players together
so i think integrity will be a concern more than size
its 128 gigs but
Oh 💀💀💀💀
yeahhh i know ☠️
haha
You should fix that ✨
SD cards aren't ready for so many r/w operations that will undergo with running Minecraft
& are really speed capped
fuckk
ill need an adapter soon then
do you know any cheap models? lol
I don't know nothing about that 😔
well alright then
setup.md is cool
But I personally wouldn't start hosting it under an SD card
It'll be fine for setting stuff until you have better storage
i agreeeee
just to give you my experience
i have a rasberry pi 5 as my home lab, with a 128gig sd card
and it is still able to run a minecraf server along with the rest of the stuff i have for around 10 people
depending on the sd card you should be fine
minecraft isnt that read and write heavy
Yea? Interesting
Although I'd do backups frequently
oh no you're definitely right about sd cards read and write speeds
i would not recommend it even if it works
it will be a bottleneck at some point for your servers performance
