minecraft server on a raspi!!!

hi all, im looking forward to hosting a minecraft server on my raspberry pi 5 - 4 core 2.6GHz, 8GBs ram, aarch64 (ARM) architecture. i have full ssh and ftp access, anything ill need. I want to host a server with some server side modifications (not mods per say) but things like terralith and some other stuff like that that just imrpove the vanilla experience, and dont really alter the core minecraft. Its gonna be a 24/7 open anarchy server for some of my friends, around 10-15 people at it's peak. does anyone have experience with setting up fabric or forge on linux? ideally i want to have a docker container running for this. can anyone give me tips to jumpstart it? thanks

👋 so your intention isn't hosting modded servers no?

tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
hmmm i do want some mods like terralith and some basic

1who¡ssus?6mo ago
Iirc terralith is a datapack
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
ahh i see

1who¡ssus?6mo ago
Datapacks tend to be heavy

tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
aside that i dont really want to have any SS mods

Due to them being often badly optimized

afaik distant horizons and sodium run on the fabric engine, and are client-side correct?

1who¡ssus?6mo ago
You should check all the software you have available for fabric vs what have you available for paper Yes Since your server tries to be lighter I wouldn't use forge What version btw?

tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
latest 1.21 oh wait chunky is also a datapack?

1who¡ssus?6mo ago
Mhm, mod support for latest versions can have lots of variations. I mean you'll find plenty No It's available as a mod and plugin

I do believe that https://setup.md is a good source of info

damn thats a nice domain name ou i see the pregen resources

Good practises are generally to pregen your world, use aikars flags for your server startup, use as many optimisation mods as possible if running modded
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
yes that is good

Indeed

i see, im probably not gonna do SS mods, only datapacks i think, and i could pregen the world and that should be fine 5kx5k seems reasonable even 2k^2 seems fine imo

I'd go the paper way tbh 5000 by 5000 square?
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
i like paper yeah yeah
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
That's small lol
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
well it is a humble beginning haha can i add more later?
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
Yeaa
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
well then if i need to ill probably add it
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
But I'd go big if storage isn't an issue 15k X 15k lol
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
to be honest with you... it is hosted on an sd card.. before i get my hands on an nvme adapter haha
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
But hey if you start small you'll be able to force players together
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
so i think integrity will be a concern more than size its 128 gigs but
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
Oh 💀💀💀💀
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
yeahhh i know ☠️ haha
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
You should fix that ✨ SD cards aren't ready for so many r/w operations that will undergo with running Minecraft & are really speed capped
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
fuckk ill need an adapter soon then do you know any cheap models? lol
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
I don't know nothing about that 😔
tenxdeveloper
tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
well alright then setup.md is cool
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
But I personally wouldn't start hosting it under an SD card It'll be fine for setting stuff until you have better storage

tenxdeveloperOP6mo ago
i agreeeee

just to give you my experience i have a rasberry pi 5 as my home lab, with a 128gig sd card and it is still able to run a minecraf server along with the rest of the stuff i have for around 10 people depending on the sd card you should be fine minecraft isnt that read and write heavy
1who¡ssus?
1who¡ssus?6mo ago
Yea? Interesting Although I'd do backups frequently
Game_Time
Game_Time6mo ago
oh no you're definitely right about sd cards read and write speeds i would not recommend it even if it works it will be a bottleneck at some point for your servers performance
