Kerchiefs (incl. Bandanas) - Topic of the day 8/11/24
More than just a way to deal with sweat, kerchiefs (which include bandanas but also other things) have a place in a wide number of cultures, sub-cultures and aesthetics. How do you wear yours - around the neck, around your head, somewhere else? Are there different connotations based on how they're worn? What are your favorite colors/patterns/materials/brands?

kerchiefs good
but really I've been wearing them a bunch this summer (MFA 2024 trend) and I'm loving how they can add a lil pop of color to an outfit
would you care to elaborate on what is 'sus' or 'YAS QUEEN'
Bandanas are in a weird spot for me where ive never quite been able to wear them without feeling a bit too conscious about it. It doesnt feel natural to me
originally i wasn't a fan of kerchiefs because they read as effete or effeminate and i wasn't a fan of bandanas as i grew up in an area that had somewhat of a gang presence and my very fearful parents didn't want to risk me being falsely labeled
I feel like i could enjoy a head bandana but it doesnt make much sense with no hair to keep out of my face and my head is too big to wear most of them
I think the bandana tied around the neck is a cool look but I've yet to personally pull it off
I think I need to re-approach my bandana and find more ways to wear it.
fast forward to now and i love both, either as a tie substitute or an added accessory. there are some connotations i lean into re. queerness but it's mostly adding visual interest or leaning into an aesthetic
I will just say that @zeometer is my bandana/kerchief muse
its a bit of a homing-in on the vibe though, as a bandana can bring an outfit over the edge inte the uncanney valley of cosplay
i think this is my sole documented attempt
the irony of this is i was inspired by a bunch of other people lol @jawntanamo_bae , @Elvander @sioku etc etc
I just don't know how to tie them right
Oh totally. Plenty of fantastic kerchief fits here. I just feel like yours really click with me / my style
I have a great one from the 30s that I'd love to use but I've not been able to tie it right
I just kinda knot it but am curious about other ways to tie it
@Likepizza | pizza I'm waiting
There's some feedback loop here, I'd used bandanas and maybe a square but I was def nudged into silk kerchief / foulard territory with your help.
Also I'm on the lookout for a sweet ring I can use as a kerchief slide
similar issue, i used an actual scarf in this fit and it worked out, though you could also have the 'tie' in the back
I dont think people do that
The way you phrased reads to me as either having serious racist or homophobic undertones
i did that during covid and i don't think i was seen as 'sus'
yas queen is this
lemme get that image
at a certain point a bandana over your face during covid read as sus as in anti mask anti vax lmao
ive got four kapital bandanas I never use, slightly worn and wrinkled but otherwise fine. Think there is any resale value? personally I would find a used bandana sus but idk people have different strokes ig
oh loooool bandana was an 'in case my kn-95 broke', most places here accepted 'any facial covering'
used to use a buff but it was gross
da flat brim monster energy drink hat with da aviator sunglasses with da punisher blue lives matter bandana
i think there's a difference between 'i cannot pull this look off' and 'this look is effeminate or queer coded'
one bandana three ways
bandanas are cool and fun
I like tying bandanas on my tote bags / pant loops for a little more subtle flair of personality
cool kerchief fits
also pretty sure something unlocked in me here for which i have never recovered
or just stay and read and learn, that's also an option π
you did a bandana with a suit look right?
oh i was thinking of this one. guess it wasn't actually a suit
This one was so good
this was an outfit I was planning to copy for the theme waywt and didn't have time. Its so great
never had kerchiefs or bandanas
I kinda want to get one ngl looks cool
On my list of "things to buy eventually"
π΅πΈ
I do the bandana round the neck or head quite a bit, handy to have when it's hot out. Not got the confidence to rock a shemagh (and the only shop you can get traditional ones from is shut right now for obvious reasons)
send them to me I'll wear em
Yeah wtf gimme
I can wear the big shemagh but cant seem to wear kerchiefs
Get in line buddy!
;_;
Bandanas have been part of my wardrobe for a while, the black one I wear often is the same one I used to wear when I was emo/scene in 2008
Then I started tying bandanas around my neck in college around 2014, over sweaters, tees, collared shirts
Now I just wear them on my head
Bandanas are cool but they definitely don't make an outfit in my opinion
but to answer the question yes you should be able to sell them easy enough but dont expect $$$
As someone who works with their hands and has long hair, the utility cannot be overstated
Much prefer to like a head band or something
Also just fun to collect different graphics and fun little added detail
I want a kapital one
First 10 bandana/square scarf fits in my camera roll
as a fellow long hair dude this convinces me to go buy one π
last 10 fits with bandana/square scarf
i feel like little edie is the move for fall
This describes where I am exactly. I think they look awesome, and so many people wear them well. But I just can't get over the mental hurdle when I put one on.
I used to wear bandanas/silk scarves as substitutes for ties quite often until I moved to a gang neighborhood a while back. I'm mixed race so I I feel like I have to be kind of careful where I wear them and what colors, even tho I wear trad and ivy coded outfits pretty often, some people are quite harsh judges of character when it comes to race
One of the oldest fits of yours I've saved youre wearing a bandana haha
Lol! I've certainly experimented with them quite a bit!!
bandanas are my main way of dressing for the flea market lol
ive said it before i think, but i think of ties like scarves, they add a 3D nature to a suit
mkaing it slouchy despite having a formal connotation
at least compared to biz caz
so im so used to it
and having a bandana or a neck scarf in other more casual fits is a great way for me to be like "me"
even when not in a suit
Do you guys have recs for where to look for bandanas?
Like I really like kapital designs and I was wondering what other brands might be out there
We've got a bunch of these https://handkerbandanas.com/collections/all-bandanas-womens-mens-cotton-designer-bandanas-scarves

Ngl im not a fan of the inverted raising sun.
More of a fan of their bohemian stuff
.
Bauhaus collection also looks interesting (not pictured but i like this feather bandana)
They also sell single and double ended cravats which is nice but not something I'll likely ever wear.

ginewusa
Bandanas + Wild Rags
100% all-cotton bandanas and wild rags made in USA from Ginew: a Native American clothing company based in Portland, OR USA. Artist-designed.
I think ginew speaks for itself.
My last bandana purchase was from RL, a little overpriced if you ask me, not sure how much selection they even have now.
I have a RRL one which was pricey even second hand. Probably not worth it but π€ as hell
MAn those Ginew ones are nice

How to tie a scarf like Bruce Boyer
G. Bruce Boyer walked into the room and my head snapped back in surprise, a slight intake a breath passing my lips. It was not the entrance of Mr. Boyer into the room that had engendered this reactβ¦
Basically he just tucks it in under a button, kinda like how military ties were worn in the 30s and 40s.
Some inspo inc. Laurence Fellows, James Baldin, marlon brando, and some random farm workers in the UK during the forties.
Some of Laurence's illustrations show large ones tied in neat little bows over the entire shirt collar with small ends, haven't been able to replicate that unfortunately though.
gave up on finding the other ones but here's an example on the right and there's one neat little blue bow in the first post in the fourth image.
