Near-100% GPU Strain even at lowest graphic settings.
Unless I use Detail by Chunk, which looks horrible- I can't get my GPU to not be cooking while using this mod. Even without any shaders.
No matter what I do. I've set the graphic detail configs to Height Map and Lowest, and I'm not budging on setting the Max Horizontal Res to anything that isn't Block, unless the devs make it any less ugly than it currently is, because it's just not pretty enough to want to use 2 blocks or worse.
How is the mod this poorly optimized?

If you look at LODs, you will hit 100% GPU usage solely from the card struggling to render billions of polygons. On the other hand, there's also that message I linked you with.

Your (our) GPU can only render up to a number of triangles (polygons). If it reach astronomical amounts, even the mighty 4090 will be brought to its knees.

The cap is at around 320 chunks at Extreme preset for the RX 580.

The quality preset plays a huge role.
I think it being able to kill a 4090 says more about the mod's optimization and stability rather than the GPU

You will kill a 4090 at around 2048 chunks at Extreme. That's the hard limit of Distant Horizons itself.
At that point why even let anyone put in anything higher

It only has them for when my CPU usage is too high and even then it's just cause i'm loading new chunks, I didn't know chunky was required for a playable experience (on CPU-contrained machines at least)

Even at "I paid for the whole cpu" (risking my pc) it takes forever to load up LODs.
That preset is pretty naive in terms of CPU utilization.
I think DH should have a built in pre-load chunks option/feature because doing everything on the fly is kinda silly
So just like how most shaders dont let you go low enough, this mod doesn't let you go high enough

Thing is, chunky actually works pretty well for me and it saves my framerate and cpu usage
Just turn up cpu load, turn down vanilla graphics settings, and afk
Anyways, you can improve the performance if you dig deeper into the advanced options specific to threading.
I've done that and even after 20+ minutes only half the LODs were loaded, the ones behind me

That error means Distant Horizons suffered a collision with other world generator.
Puhpine asked if you have Passable Leaves Blocks, which you replied yes. That mod seems to cause that to happen.

Distant Generator
is too slow:
Try increasing CPU Load
in Distant Horizons settings for faster generation, but you will experience more lag spikes and stuttering due to heavier workload on CPU.
To see if Distant Generator
is really working or not:
1) Check CPU usage while in-game, using Aggressive
settings of CPU Load
. If CPU usage's hovering around 80-100%, the LoDs are generating in the background.
2) Go to DH settings > Advanced Options > Debug > Wireframe
, set Enable Debug Wireframe Rendering
and Show World Gen Queue
to True
.
Enabling both settings will show you the visualization of world gen tasks queued and working on the map (blue boxes for queued tasks, red boxes for working tasks)Might be useful

Okay so why can't DH render everything at full throttle max settings even after 30 minutes?
Over 30 minutes, I started at around 9:16 AM, now its 10.
This is some pretty crazy prep times just to have 128 on DH

That took like an hour or so to generate 128 fully.

This same processor took almost a whole month to generate 2048 chunks, which is exactly what I've done for the past month.
Took me (technically) infinite time to generate 128 chunks as dh freezes my computer at about 100

This is overdraw issue.
Vanilla chunks should cover that hole, but they did not load in time
The best fix is to make vanilla chunks load in faster, by .e.g. decreasing vanilla RD or installing some performance mods or to move slower
second best is to decrease the over draw prevention in DH setting, and if using shaders in shader settings
if you shader does not allow for overdraw tuning
make a feature request to the shader dev and/or change the shader
