if you told 2016 me that you'd no longer wear skinny jeans he would believe you
- peeling myself out of skinny pants isn't actually a desirable daily experience (for me)
- some clothes are actually worth more than $30
- don't just buy the thing because it's a good deal
- hang drying is good, you don't need the clothes immediately
- people who don't present femme can rock cute accessories & bags
- form does not need to follow function
- there are fun unisex and "men's" clothes you just have to put the effort in to find them or style your existing clothes differently
- similarly, "menswear" isn't boring, trad or otherwise
- dressing for myself is more important than dressing to pre-emptively appease concerns about how others might perceive me
- i don't actually need brown paraboot michaels
Also tell 2016 me that the jeans he thinks are super wide and baggy are, in fact, still skinny :xd:
Vertical stripes do NOT in fact make you taller
I keep up with trends so whatever the trend is I’ll flip flop. In that sense I’m like a politician
Sneakers with tailoring
In the end its actually a skill issue
never let sneakerheads cook
The obvious one for me is simply that I could care about clothes at all
In a complete 180: cuffing jeans (usually) looks dumb and jeans look better stacked (maybe me specific because I’m a giant but point stands)
This is a good take
it's okay to own and wear cool things because you enjoy them without needing them to be super versatile
designer labels are not inherently better
Logos and graphics. I was super opposed to them for most of my late 20s because I had this insane idea in my head that I needed to dress “mature.” A good logo or graphic is cool, I was stupid
u can't actually get the desired fit you want for cheap all the time. you can get cheaper but learned the hard way that specific cuts and styles simply can't be obtained from uniqlo or the thrift
-slim fit and/or low rise pants suck and you cant make yourself like them.
-spend the money on the actual thing you want
-jewelery on men is cool as fuck
-you might as well just rent a suit if you wear it biannually
Low rise is goated
I don't like em for me!
“Don’t just buy things because it’s a good deal” don’t you dare slander my emotional support frivolous ebay putchases
im more talking about my final sale $12 baby pink j.crew shirt i bought 3.5y ago and didn't even take the tags off of before i gave it away :^)
- hyped, limited release drops are sick actually, that shit is so cool it's like a trophy
- its literally always better to be spending money on the things you want instead of spending less money on things that are kinda like the thing u want
- loafers are sick actually
- I was always right about big t shirt (fuck you, everyone who said big t shirt was sloppy)
^buying the thing you want is always the less expensive option in the long run
You will still end up wanting to buy it even if you buy the less expensive version, and you’ll probably sell the less pricey thing at a loss
Your second point is one that took me a long time to come to terms with but has brought me much enlightenment
it's so much easier when u don't have hatin ass losers in ur ear questioning why you're spending $350 on those pants
Having this place as a echo chamber to reinforce my expensive buys has done wonders for my emotional state
My favorite thing is when I’m looking at something that seems expensive to me and then someone shows me an even more expensive item to want
A nice change of thinking for me is that its ok to get rid of something I used to like but don't anymore, or especially something expensive I bought but don't actually like. Just getting rid of it feels so freeing
instead of hanging onto because of "sunk cost" or whatever
imo there's a LITTLE wiggle room here in that I learned that I like Big Short and Big Pants and Boxy Cropped Shirt by buying cheap versions of each first BUT if you already like the thing and can afford the thing just buy the thing for sure
like one of my learnings could also probably be summarized as like
- it's not wasted money if you learned something from the purchase, even if what you learned is 'i don't like this thing' or 'i want a nicer or different version of this thing'
Oh yeah I meant less of “I want to try something out,” so much as “let me find a cheap version of a grail”
Yeah, if you know what you want, buy that. But if you don't, eBay. 😀
I almost always know what I want, and I still use eBay
I think the biggest u-turn of all for me is that clothes and fashion are interesting to me, and that's ok
Well, yeah. EBay is also a lot of fun.
Yeah it’s the closest I’ll ever get to an archaeological discovery
i cannot keep track of if people are posting an opinion they did have and made a u-turn on or if they're posting their post-turn opinion
mine were both post turn
Okay. For clarity, these are ideas I have abandoned:
- Im not cool enough to wear that
- More expensive clothes are always the same quality as the cheap stuff
- Labels are generally dumb (I will die on the hill that the PRL Jockey is ugly though)
- People who are into fashion are superficial and frivolous
I am also entering the era where I feel secure enough in my tastes to justify the big ticket grail purchases and therefore agree with the "if you want something buy it and not a cheap replacement"
i used to value aesthetics over comfort (hence squeezing into levis 511s and size small shirts and size 10 shoes once i could fit them as validation) and now value comfort and functionality
I think what got me into sport coats were the pockets lol
I love Ethan's article about this
I can’t speak for all people into fashion, but I am superficial and frivolous
do NOT get into watches
Don’t worry, I won’t
thats what I used to say 😭
