AIS vessel names

Starting relatively recently (cannot pinpoint with which Signal K server upgrade but currently on 2.8.2) something seems to have changed with AIS name identification. The names are now missing for many of the targets. Missing names do show up in the chartplotter so don’t think it is the AIS itself or the reception. This is relatively a new phenomenon, was not observing a notificable/similar behavior before. I can also observe this on some of the boats in Saillogger so does not seem isolated to me. Before I do any further digging, anything obvious comes to mind?

Missing where? In Data Browser or Freeboard or just not anywhere? A good way to debug this would be to log your ais input to a file and then play it back to try to reproduce this

Just checked my boat, most targets have names. Is your AIS NMEA2000?

Missing in Data Browser (and as a result in Saillogger) AIS is NMEA2000

Mine too. Next step would be as @Teppo Kurki said above.

What is the best way to capture data specifically for this? My NMEA network is a bit chatty Initial suspicion: if a vessel first appears at a distance where you can locate the position but name is unavailable, even if that boat comes and docks right next to you, name is not updated or refreshed

Those are actually two different transmissions. And position is transmitted more often. I definitely see your case working for me, but who knows… To get logs, enable Data Logging on your Connection

vessel's static data like name is transmitted on regular intervals and handling is no different to updated sensor values, new values override the old one. there is no logic related to distance or having other data items available, i think you are barking up the wrong tree
