Double denim
I am currently thinking about getting a trucker jacket for some double denim fun. Are there any rules for how to do double denim "correctly" that I should be aware of? I assume one could either do matching colors or "jacket darker than pants darker than shirt" - have I gotten this right? Or could I also wear a white denim jacket with a dark pair of pants?

Canadian tuxedo is the most difficult to pull off. Try for color or texture variation and you’ll be A-OK.
Okay. So basically as long as the two pieces are different enough to make it look intentional it is all right?
Mostly yeah, but you’d have to decide on a case by case basis.
matching shades works great, for example

mismatching also works great, dark jacket with light jeans or vice versa
Denim jacket will also go great with for example, fatigues, carpenter pants, cords, chinos
man I‘m a big fan of Jay Leno‘s look; i don’t think it‘s particularly difficult to pull it off

But see - he’s using different shades to make it work!
there are plenty other pictures where it‘s the exact same shade

denim itself feels very casual so imo there's a wide range of "acceptable" ways to do this
jackie chan in the 70s
That I feel is a difficult thing to do, but plenty of people have done it well. You need to know what you’re doing though.
ecru denim is also a good option, especially light wash shirt/top and ecru bottom
Mind: I never said the Canadian tux is a bad look, I think it’s really cool if done well. It’s just difficult to do well.
a belt helps make the difference in shades more intentional https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1243573426199724194 but isn't required https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1213600431004196865
what‘s so difficult about it? i wouldn‘t call jay leno fashion forward and it (imo!) still looks great!
also though the pictures don't reflect this, lighter top/darker bottom also works
trucker jacket without a shirt is such a power move
his outfit is so 🔥🔥🔥
especially with that golden chain😁
oh yes,, thats the cherry on top
I can see you wearing a similar outfit! seems to fit your 70s inspired style
Yeah, I can see myself wearing that as well 😄
iirc fit battle had a bunch of double denim early on with the advent of cowboy meta
Also done well by Steve McQueen

I am of the camp that thinks mismatched denim looks weirder than matched actually
But mostly just at the extremes
If you have a raw jacket and vintage faded jeans that’s wonky to me
But Raw jacket and dark washed jeans would work for you?
If they’re the same exact fabric it’s just a take on a suit
Jesus, did I offend you somehow? I just voiced an opinion.
no offence taken! ✌️was just genuinely curious
All the middle amounts of faded seem pretty easy to mix and match imo
Thoughts on this? Does this combination work?

I just think the Canadian guy isn’t something where you can just throw on the roughly same shade and it’ll work I guess. There’s got to be some thought behind it at least.
looks great!
Propably would look better with a wider belt and a big belt buckle
That’s rad
So what I take from this discussion is that its kinda hard to put it into rules and that I propably need to try some stuff on in person.
yup

I hate denim (lovingly) - there are a bazillion pieces that look slightly different from each other and you really need to be careful not to end up with a closet full of the stuff
why you calling me out like that
alternatively just lean into it if you like it, buy all the slightly different denim
I used to think of myself as a corduroy person
the two genders
also depends on the vibe; there's a difference between https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1219673819908669500/1228921206451867700 and https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1219673819908669500/1228920452039315517 for example
All right, I guess I will see what the flea market turns up and if I can't find anything there I guess I have to make another trip to the denim consignment store
I think it looks good but has to be darker on bottom lighter on top
Perfect match and mismatch

what wash is the second one?
is it the same as the first?
Second and first have the same pants, raw selvedge from left field denim, second top is a vintage from the sixties so it probably started out as raw too
But i’d classify it as a mid wash with vintage fading
More accurate color representation

I unfortunately sold it and i majorly regret it
I think that darker on top/lighter on bottom can work well if the lighter bottom has been naturally faded. If one were to have a true denim tux, identical denim on both top and bottom, the bottom will fade at a much faster rate. However, I think that it looks less weird because the fabric is identical. (@volvo_sufu has some examples of this on Instagram)
However, a raw jacket with uniformly light stonewashed jeans is a harder look to pull off. Similarly, the raw tux look would be difficult if the bottom is fully faded out while the top is still very dark
