looking to enter the blazer game - advice for versatile first blazer?

I dress pretty casually for the most part, but upon getting dressed for a broadway show last week i found that I am pretty lacking in the “more formal” department. I’m thinking a blazer would be a good addition to my existing closet and widen my wardrobe on the formality spectrum. Ideally would like to find a secondhand one on ebay or elsewhere, $100 or less. what are some brands/keywords to search by? and what’s a versatile pattern/color? I wear a lot of earth tones so am guessing a navy or brown or houndstooth or herringbone blazer would get me pretty far but what do you think?

I agree with solid navy or herringbone in brown or gray If you don't have a blazer, go try some on in person to figure out your size. Ideally, get a fabric tape measure and measure a good fitting blazer. Pit-to-pit, sleeve, and shoulders You should be able to find one on eBay for $50 if you are patient. Make sure it's returnable until you know your size really well

Building a secondhand academic wardrobe
Those of you who know my posts here know I'm all about buying secondhand, so, I wanted to share my progress on building an academic wardrobe completely secondhand. I work in academia, and like to play into that a bit with some loafers and tweedy sport coats, especially at professional events like conferences.

Double breasted are surprisingly easy to wear and very versatile, imo
