I've got a business outing coming up in a few weeks. Can shorts be "smart casual"?

The outing is in Arizona so it's gon' be hottt

I’d ask your manager! I would probably get linen pants as a hedge without specific guidance If the outing is like.. hiking.. in Sedona.. in summer.. and you have to wear chinos id just quit

I'm guessing "no", so I definitely recommend some linen pants.

I disagree. Generally the term I associate with no shorts is “business”. “Smart” feels like nothing like tank tops, ripped/cutoff shorts, etc

when I'm saying "shorts" I'm talking like fancy shorts, like the shorts people would wear that make you think "trust fund" and "owns a boat". not loose baggy cargo shorts

I’ve never thought of shorts as part of a smart casual look, but I think that in the summer or outdoors in some heat, nice shorts could work as part of a smart casual look. I’d personally stay away from shorts if it’s mostly indoors with air conditioning.

Get some pants in linen, seersucker or tropical wool.
