Incredibly High CPU Usage even with low settings
Hello, I've just installed Distant Horizons along with Iris, Sodium, and Indium for 1.20.4 Fabric singleplayer, and I've hit a massive CPU usage spike while using the mod. Even at balanced or low settings I stay at 95-100% CPU usage. I have checked my system usage, and my GPU remains at 30% usage with 120 FPS. I have 32 gigs of ram with 16 currently allocated. I am aware this mod is CPU intensive, but I am pretty sure this is more than what it should be (I am running this on an i7 12700k). I have lowered the total thread count to 5 and raised it as high as 15 (lower threads marginally helps), I've installed C2ME, Noisium, and Starlight, none of which gave a serious boost, and even increased the chunk update time to 10 seconds, which still leaves me at 70% CPU usage when combined with low settings. Running the game on Aggressive CPU loading has caused crashes. Is this an incompatibility, a settings issue, or is this just the performance I should expect?

Sorry I didn’t see this earlier. I tried all the suggestions given here, but they didn’t seem to have a huge impact. I did lower my thread count as much as was possible and reduce ram to 10 gigs, which had no effect initially but after making a new world my usage goes down to between 40-60%, which seems normal. I’m not sure if that fixed it or not but if you have the same problem it’s worth a try

Firstly change your ram allocated to 10 or 12. 16 is way too much and secondly have you tried seeing if it is a actual cpu probkem with your pc not dh?
I assume you are worried, that performance is wasted, or your FPS dropped.
In general if you don't hit your fps cap, either CPU or GPU should be at 100% meaning it is the bottleneck, if both CPU and GPU are significantly below 100% that means that the code is a bottleneck and the game is badly optimised.
E.G. Sodium while increasing FPS it also may increase CPU and GPU usage because it not only writes algorithms in more performant way, it also enables your hardware to actually process the code a.k.a. it allowed Minecraft to use more of your hardware.
Seeing as I have normal temps for the usage I’m getting and I’ve had no other issues, I’ve ruled out a consistent CPU problem
It usually gpu bottlenecks once I get shaders loaded, and I’m fine with that, it’s just incredibly annoying and abnormal to see such high cpu usage, even the most cpu intensive games I’ve seen played max out at 85% or so. It crashing at higher settings, though, is something that I feel is another problem.
That is very wierd maybe try removing sodium and see if that helps
I’ll try it when I’m home, I did temporarily turn off distant generation and then back on again and it ran at much lower usage.
well if it doesn't work then you can always just turn off distant gen
are you walking around using distant gen?
also if you are running some other software that is taking up a lot of cpu usage in your background you can test this by running task manager when you have just your desktop open and see if your cpu usage totals to more than 20% if it does then maybe you might be running too many things on start up or just too many background processes there should be a tutorial online of how to shorten how many background processes you have going
Initially I was, I turned it off afterwards, my fps recovered a lot, and after restarting the game it tanked again
I checked task manager as soon as I saw the cpu usage, no antivirus scans or downloads or anything else using cpu
is your cpu usage on your desktop above 20%
try having a look here it might help https://www.avg.com/en/signal/fix-high-cpu-usage

How to Fix High CPU Usage in Windows
Why is your CPU running at 100% and what level of usage is normal? Fix your high CPU issue to resolve issues like freezes and crashes.
No it’s 5 or 6% max
cpu usage shouldnt be high with distant gen disabled. Having it on its expected to be poor performance.
Im pretty proficient at troubleshooting normally and I’ve benchmarked multiple games before, including this game without dh. First time with usage this high
are you using an overlay and or monitoring software?
Afterburner
what is your vanilla render distance
This is a very wierd issue and I am not sure how it could be fixed
tbh
I am not the best with trouble shooting in my coding but I am alright with like games
I myself have 100% CPU and 30-50% GPU usage, using DH and other performance mods
I have a pretty crap cpu (fx 6350) and it bottlenecks my gpu (gtx 1070 SC2) I get around 80% cpu usage and 100% gpu with performance mods and dh
but I run shaders and high levels of quality
that is with no shaders, 1024 render distance, high preset, DH 2.1.0 (2.0.4-RC1), high preset
I still wouldn't consider this result out of place an wierd
what gpu do you have?
4080
oops I tried writing dmn
but of course for some people that can be rude
It is good…
Well never mind
I play at 18 chunks normally but for this I lowered it to 10
100% with distant gen enabled?
dh will use as much cpu as you have lol
Out of curiosity which manufacturer is your 4080
does it matter? Not saying that to be rude. Most 40 series cards perform pretty neck and neck
yea
That’s not why I’m asking, I’m wondering if he has the same manufacturer as me and if there could be some weird driver issue with that series of cards
tomatosoup have you tried using fps reducer it should reduce any not needed cpu processes
It’s unlikely but at this point I’ll take anything
I have it locked at 100
do you have any other mods?
Yes, but already generated and loaded long time ago
odd
ASUS, I don’t recommend, it is not stable
I have been doing a bit of research and try changing your rendering engine to shenandoah GC
I don't like asus gpu personally
Right now me too
Nvm then I’m on gigabyte
I will try that later, this, ”Z”, ”G1”, and ”G1” but tuned
But it should only help with stutter, while big amount of RAM is allocated
this is what im seeing after having rendered 128 distance lod
Is that with bliss shaders?
photon
I’ll have to try them, they look amazing
I normally use a heavily customized version of complementary, but it doesn’t work with dh unfortunately
not atm ye
it is planned tho
Yeah I can’t wait for it
I love the lighting you can get with them
same
Only screenshot I have saved, but you get the idea
Anyways I’ll test some of the stuff you guys suggested soon when I get home, hopefully I can find something to fix it
yea pretty stunning
Did you ever find a fix?

oh just so you would reply incase you forgot
I hope your new worlds are playable and it may be that your old worlds have a lot of saved data which could be a factor in the high cpu usage
there is a way to significantly decrease data but I do not know much about it also if it is fixed can you add the solved tag to your post
Yeah unless anyone else has problems I’ll mark it as solved soon, the world with the data issue was a test one anyways
oh that's good then
