Dressing Provocatively ("Slutty") - Topic of the day 4/27/24
Do you consider yourself to be someone who dresses provocatively? Share your experiences if so. What does dressing provocatively mean to you? Please don't turn this into a discussion about what is or isn't attractive to you, I really don't want to be monitoring this thread all day.

Oh boy
here we go lol
Most of the time I would say that I don't dress provocative at all, but when I do I always feel a bit mischievous. I guess I like the Idea of being a tease, though I am very much unclear how much of an effect I am actually having on my sourroundings.
Easy mode but I’m wearing a lot of ribbed tanks as outerwear and trying to dress more slutty undoing one button at a time. We’ll see if I’m successful this summer or not
The first time I wore a tank top was a couple of weeks ago. Even with it covered up, there was something about it that made me feel a little muscular and sexy.
def thinking about putting on a tank tops and wearing more “provocative” clothing but i’m not super comfortable with my body yet
dressing provactivly means showing more of my skin than im used to ie (tshirt and shorts) i recently got a pair of short shorts which have been treating me nicely
exposing ankles is very slutty 🧐
do you guys remember the codpiece
its a piece of medieval clothing that went between your legs to show off... something
Your cod!
you know
you need to stow your smoked cod somewhere
silly goose
sorry
slut boy summer is fast approaching, trim those jorts up high
but I think thats an interesting segway into a question I wanted to raise for discussion: Is slutty just showing off more skin/body than usual?
My definition:
it is accentuating parts of the body that people might get turned on by
a lot of my summer fits are big pants and loose stringer, but that doesn't feel slutty to me. 5" inseam shorts tho? Those make me feel provocative. Imo it's more about the dresser than the onlooker.
ig the point i was heading towards is that it's the intentionality of the wearer that's most important? mesh, cropped, or unbuttoned shirts don't feel slutty or sexy to me when i do it but shorts (of rly any length) do🤷♂️
I think chunky boots with very short pants can be much more slutty than less chunky shoes bc it draws down the eye to the legs
heeled boots are a powermove because they nicely accentuate your calves
this all makes me think of this type of swim trunks
I’m sorry but yalls definition of wearing provocative clothing is putting on a tank top?
no
Sorry short shorts and a tank top?
no, short shorts and shirtless
That’s not dressing
Now I want to know what your definition of slutty is. I have to admit that Im not 100% sure if I could provide one.
Personally I think the parts of the body that are concealed matter almost more than the ones that are revealed. Which is why just tight swimming trunks are not terribly slutty. Also obviously context matters.
Hey I said it was level 1 lol
I mean showing skin is simply one way to do it. Being naked isn’t dressing and isn’t provocative/slutty it’s just being naked
sometimes not showing skin is sluttier than showing skin
smh
Dion Lee, eckhaus latta
Y2K is very slutty
anyway theres a ton of mesh shirts that are in in menswear rn, or translucent
crop tops
Even large pants are slutty
Heavy crops are slutty
Fucking leg warmers are slutty
Yall need to open yall straight ass eyes
char post your fits
talk your shit
You gotta explain large pants to me char
i know you got some from last summer
That’s why I’m here
Go off char. The hero we need
That is not a definition but please continue 😄
You know it if you know it
Ah, so its like being cool?
Low rise with crop top seems like a play
Can work
the straight version of this
This is slutty while being fully clothed
Honestly…
Love it
I wanted to mention chaps as having great potential for sluttyness. Feels like this makes my point
Salo where are you
also just a tank top is way less slutty than a tank peeking out from an undone shirt
or an undone shirt in general
the illusion of unintentionality
To a degree. There needs to be an uncertainty about wheter or not it is intentional I think.
Is this slutty or rakish
Both
I haven’t hit that part of puberty yet
Body shaming? In my fashion server?
Fair
You are right
Apologies
Me and my three chest hairs are crying screaming and throwing up
It’s hella slutty
(Truly nbd)
I literally don’t have a single chest hair
Genetics
Is Tom Selleck slutty or just hot?
I’m voting slutty
i think there's two different modes of provocation i engage in - slutty (which has a range https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1142196512034668594/1213917631283990538 https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1225419034179145728) and then dressing to incite a particular reaction (https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1215292551272341504); in both cases it's an extension of dressing for myself it's just in that moment i'm either feeling my oats or want to start shit on a certain subreddit

Tbh if I'm thinking about dressing sexy I immediately start thinking about certain kpop idol groups when they're on stage since it's like their entire image/concept
Idk if that's a bit of a meme answer though
eg
given that what k-pop idols wear on stage usually isn't "practical" clothing, but thematics tends to be a strong element w/ k-pop and i feel like they serve as good reference/aspirational photos somewhere along the lines of fashion shows
Por que no los dos
I think these are the sluttiest thing I own but they're also fairly easy to wear not that slutty.
I simply flip my brim down
There's some element of dressing provocatively that I enjoy, as evidenced by a few (not many) of my fits
Dressing provocatively to me can mean showing off your body but it doesn't have to. Textures and fabrics (e.g., lace, drapey linens in some cases) can give off a sense of provocative-ness (is that a word?) without showing any skin at all, and that's interesting to me. A couple weeks ago I described fits like that as "sensual" which I don't think some people liked lmao but it's the same thing to me tbh
@Salo the goat
I think that I'm trying to emulate Sal when I'm dressing like this, at least in a way
cause his fits kinda showed me the light... but it'll be a long time before I'm on his level
I can see that influence
why do I want to dress like this sometimes even if I'm happily married? Is the gaze for others to look at me? In a way. Sorry to sound extremely egotistical here but yes I feel good about myself and I enjoy showing off what I got.
But, it's also for me, in a way. It increases my confidence! It's similar to other forms of fashion (which is self-expression), and other forms of self-expression (like my other artistic hobbies). Self expression makes me feel better about myself, which is a good thing (again, kinda egotistical. oops)
I'll stop here before I write a whole essay on unbuttoning a few buttons haha
this is extremely valid and this is a joke to preface:
This is what happens when a straight guy undoes an extra button on his shirt
I wouldve laughed harder at your joke without the preface ❤️
noted
Y'all really set this when I was working a 12 hour shift smh
Workin on the weekends like usual
Sexy doesn't sleep
as someone who has been on the womenswear side of things in the past with all its loaded definitions of slutty and provocative, I've been mulling this a lot lately. I show a lot less skin than I used to, but I feel much sluttier about how I dress now. A great deal of that is the feeling of confidence, and being able to feel that I'm hot shit in what I'm wearing. I grow more and more convinced that slutty is a state of mind
Enough about the topic let’s talk about me
Some of my sluttiest fits
Bringing new meaning to the term “navel gazing”
and only one (visible) tank top to boot
in hindsight probably my sluttiest fit was the original version of this one, where i had two more buttons undone...i think certain aesthetics lend themselves to dressing more provocatively (westernwear, grunge, to name a few)
Oh dang I missed a good totd
I always feel sluttiest when I’m dressing at my most androgynous. Dealing with some of my own internalized misogyny that it’s way less sexy to dress that way with thinning hair/getting older. But trying to find ways to maintain that as I get older too that still feel like me. I think GSH makes some great points about fabric, drape, etc
To be honest, I don’t even know what would be considered “slutty” in terms of any outfits I’ve ever worn, but where I used to live for some years, whenever I dress up, people would always assume I’m gay or bisexual, which has nothing to do with being “slutty”, but I assume that’s probably how a lot of backwards people associate these things, maybe?
But then again, I was just scrolling to see any of the outfits in which I’ve been told those things, and I have photos like this in my gallery. So….make of that what you will? 😂
Hard
fit challenge: look slutty in a quarter zip.
difficulty level: high
Mind blown. Never did I realize a rugby shirt could be slutty.
Just like Jackie Treehorn said
one of a few
Low key I feel like westernwear is always slutty, but maybe I’m just slutty
basically just -2 buttons is as slutty as i get
it was hot as shit today so i went three buttons down for science 🧪 you couldn't really tell visually unless the cool breeze blowed through, though it took a while to get over the mental hangup of feeling exposed
isn't that 4
do we count from the collar or the one below it
like genuinely asking here
also i feel like this hits differently if you have more upper body development than i
my default is leaving the collar button undone (i button it when wearing ties) so i consider the second button as 1, etc
Not at all. I’ll dress provocatively once I get my body fat down to 12% and six pack abs.
For credibility, all responses should include a purity test score.
at first i was going to say "body fat percentage doesn't correlate to abs or ability to dress provocatively" and while the former is still true i do think there's a bigger question regarding why one would dress provocatively
or perhaps, if there's a way to dress in the same sort of ways (unbuttoned shirts, tank tops, etc) for functional reasons without the intent or connotations of being provocative
I think if it is done for functional reason that might occur in a specific context (i.e. it being really damn hot) that clarifies the intent of the wearer.
Although that apparently does not always work. See ppl assuming woman dress slutty in the summer when the intent is just to dress appropriate for the weather, which appears to be a relatively common thing as far as I understand. Though that is also just sexism.
Oh yeah, I’m not pure
Dang it I am found out 🥸
Sorry if this offended anyone. It’s a personal choice. I want to dress “sexy” only when I feel comfortable with my body. This is not to shade others.
The why is obvious right? To attract others
As a few ppl have alr said in this thread, dressing provocatively has nothing to do with attracting other people for them
Honestly, I find that hard to wrap my head around that too.
"provocatively" means you're trying to provoke other people. Maybe not everyone, but more than zero other people.
And "slutty" implies, to me at least, that it has to do with sex and attraction.
(I don't think provocative always implies sexual provocation, but the wording of the topic means it does in this conversation)
I also have a lot of empathy for Archie, because I have felt that way most of my life. But I agree it's not an attitude I want to encourage, and I'm enjoying this thread for precisely that reason.
imo this is the intersection of what the wearer is comfy with and the expectations of those around them.
I often wear shirts unbuttoned 3-5 buttons and if I say im "going slut style" it's because I'm able to acknowledge that some people would feel that I was being provocative, even if I don't agree. Like, for me, a shirt unbuttoned "too far" is just cozy beach vibes, but a few examples in this thread call it slutty.
And what I failed to communicate early on in this thread, is that so much of this is just personal. I inherently feel provocative when I put on shorts (of any length) but I don't see someone in shorts and think "wow slutty", and that's where the interaction btwn comfort & expectations kinda hits
Yeah...one of the things I like about this topic is that it gets us thinking outside what we are used to. As a straight guy, I'm almost totally unfamiliar with the idea of dressing to provoke a sexual reaction.
also even with saying all that, im not saying people (myself included) dress without the intent of provoking desire in other people - but it isn't the sole reason & it might not even be a reason for everyone.
lots of black, latino, queer, or alt people (& the intersections btwn them) have been criticized for provocative styles simply because they don't adhere to white american christian values.
also from experience sometimes the reverse happens, where something is provocative just because the wearer not white (see: anytime a non-white person posts trad stuff on r/preppy)
exactly yes - there's the expectation of specific behavior/dress because the onlooker has already decided that the wearer should be dressing in a certain way to fit the onlooker's worldview
ik I dressed slutty when my grandma disapproves. It's not really about attraction as others have stated
That all makes sense. I overlooked the aspect of "unintentionally provocative".
Dang can't believe I missed this
I love the summer because being slutty is my favorite way to dress
I only have a very tenous grasp on the concept of slutty on account of me being ace, but is this slutty?
For some reason the tie made this fit feel somewhat slutty
Yes on the pants
Not really on tie and blazer
I do think Husbands is provocative in a way
It's a strong word but I would say this fit has an element of being provocative in a sense (see https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1233809888002441336/1233904071853871114) - not because of skin just because of silhouette and drape

Agreed with Char that it's the pants moreso than the tie, the jacket being loose and worn open has to do with it though
i would consider it rakish tbh
if the intent was to be slutty or provocative in that sort of way then i echo the comments about the tie and jacket kinda
rakish would be a good word for these fits if it weren't used so often by insufferable menswear bloggers
Reclaiming rakish from the insufferable bloggers then
Yeah, rakish fits better with my intention when dressing.
fashion buzzwords would be a good totd...
