Color series: Black - Topic of the day 4/15/24
Get the đź–¤ emojis ready, it's time to discuss the color black. How do black clothing and all black outfits make you feel? What makes it goth? What makes it formal? What makes black leather hit different than brown leather? Is buying a black suit a bad idea? Why do designers make so much black clothing? Is it important to differentiate between different shades of black when putting together outfits? What about different textures? What are your favorite fits from yourself and others that feature the color black?

good color
luv' black loafers, luv' black sweaters, luv' black shirts, luv' black pants, 'ate black suits, simple as
good color. but surprisingly hard to pair with other colors. very easy to end up monochromatic.
I used to wear so much black and u turned so hard i feel like i dont know gow to wear it anymore
just got some black derbies from Rancourt...excited to try them.
I have some beautiful drapey black casablanca trousers that i absolutely love but somehow i find them hard to wear cause im so used to blue jeans or wool trousers being my neutral pant
Would be great to see some inspo pics of outfits featuring black that aren't tonal/monochromatic.
Black sidezip boot is the goated boot still in my opinion
permanent style did a good article on black clothes
gimme a sec

Wearing black
Over the past year, I’ve gradually been wearing more black. Readers will have seen that in the recommendation of this Berg & Berg black shirt, for example, and these black cords. It's been particularly pronounced with shoes though, and I also mentioned I’d picked up some Edward Green loafers in...
Sincere q what’s the black suit hate thinking
im mostly memeing, ive seen a lot of really good black suits
i think it mostly comes from a lot of people's first (or only) suit being an ill fitting, shiny black suit
but ive seen really great black suits in linen for example
I'd also venture that 90% of the time, a charcoal gray suit is strictly better than a black suit. Covers basically all the "black suit" use cases, and is way more versatile.
Oh sure sure sure. Easier to to do poorly
Good colors to wear with black?
Olive, brown, red?
I like Olive, brown, and navy/indigo
People twnd to think black suits should be for fashion or for funerals
Jeans and black go together
def olive, tan/khaki, navy, lighter colors generally, shades of grey obv
olive suit black shirt is an iconic combo
And then black shoes and boots with olive is a classic military combo
I think its kinda overly simplistic to see it that way though, especially as suits are becoming much more casual-ified and colors are getting more expressive
I should get my black suit tailored
I’ll try to find pictures but o like how Peter Zottolo aka urbancomposition wears black polos or turtlenecks under his casuals suits
Yeah I’ve really loved wearing my black MUJI “suit” with a tee n sandals
I always feel I’m on vacation 🙂
Oh that’s a lapel and a half
I used to wear very little black but it’s finally taken hold of me, I bought like 5 pairs of black shoes in the last 6 months probably
Cool way to de-classic-menswear-ify a grey suit
I oscillate between black is the only color worth wearing it’s so nice and so easy and so cool and sexy to
Why would you deprive yourself of color true style is being able to play with color and pattern
Probably unhealthy a little. But I think I am learning that I like to play with shape more than color
Your double rider is perfect
It’s a very nice old leather
I see too many double riders around though my contrarian nature is turning me against it
They’re fully saturated here
around mid 2020 switched from my previous style (basically my current style except i mostly shopped at mall brands) to wearing all black and it was nice, especially for that time when there was a bunch of uncertainty in the world that i was struggling to reconcile...and then i got past it late last year. i like the aesthetic and there's really nice all black fits that play with texture or shape but it's not for me atm
that said this is still kinda cool and i still own all of this oops :xd:
That’s tuff
Honestly this but like. Ur purple hat on top
i really enjoy seeing people like @Salo @mewball @algoresky and @circleframes who embrace all black or mostly black fits in really nice ways or people like @GSH or @dangerg who weave it into aesthetics that don't typically see a lot of black
i have been summoned
frankly im just a goth bitch and feel good wearing all black and feeling a little edgy
but i dress a lot based on mood an self expression so usually if im feeling negative emotions it kinda makes me feel better to just murder out
I have a lot of black basics, as I'm always thinking "it's a good base" but don't tend to use it a lot. I also tend to do seasonal colors, but even in the winter I'm starting to go lighter, or have that accent be a deeper color.
Obivously it's great for a top when I'm not wanting to think and wanting to feel a pound lighter.
Starting to like it more paired with a military-like green, some tans, or other colors I didn't usually attempt.
I used to use black to make a statement piece more statement-y by keeping the rest of me basic.
Black is always my most comfortable color even as I wear it less and less. All black monochrome is what I wear when I'm just tired and don't want to put too much thought into a fit but still want to feel good
Kinda nice to see that like. Sal, mew, algoresky and I are all black clothes enjoyers but nobody would mistake our styles for the others
I think I’m with meat
All black isn’t really in my repertoire but a black leather shoe just feels so right so often
So true. I’ve gone from no black leather shoes to 2 black bluchers, black Mary janes, black loafers in the past year or so and it’s such a relief
Hope my black Haruta slippers end up fitting
i have perhaps too many black shoes
most of my shoes are black
ive had alot of moments where I want to move towards an all black wardrobe, then I just... dont
Yeah I want those black slippers but I should chill for a bit I’m broke
I think a difficult part with all black outfits is I feel every piece needs to be somewhat interesting in shape, texture, ect
I do need more summer shoes though
i mean thats the fun part of it though
you can focus purely on sillouette
Oh for sure
It just means you need to own interesting black pieces
this applies to non black stuff too
:chadtop:
you have to have cool clothes
So easy for it to be flat yeah
taking photos of black outfits is kind of its own beast
because they blacks can get easily crunched if the lighting is not right
Big fan of black loafers and black linen
Da rej and GSH special
@mewball what other color shoes do u have
I sometimes try to do the all-black-with-crazy-color shoe but it doesn’t always hit
Black linen is nice because it's soft and wrinkly and casual but also a little broody
I’m a graphic designer and there’s a running joke in our industry about designers wearing all black too often for some reason lol, it’s associated with Brooklyn creative director types but I’ve caught myself falling into the trap many times. It just looks good
i really hate doing that
every designer at tumblr wore all black its so real
Everyone at my school was in all black haha
That’s probably part of why I’m reticent to do it
Designers love all black they can’t help it
Yeah I always felt stupid looking down at my like yellow adidas or aqua ASICS or w/e it’s all I could see
i have black and earth tone mainly
Just like me fr
i could use some proper brown boots
Am I neurotic that I don’t like grained black leather
For shoesies
wym
like pebbled?
Oh ty yes that’s the word
ya grain is the quality
u always want full grain
or rather that the high quality shit
Right. Mew was like. U want shittier leather?…
sometimes that suits the shoe tbh! but generally yeah
I don't love pebbled leathers in general, for black leather shoes I feel like shell looks so nice
the little bit of sheen that they have is just great imo
Calf is also nice in its own way
black leathers with the right amount of wear and creasing can just really make a fit for me
Damn those r nice. My only pair of loafers is a pair of Weejuns
I'm getting my first black garment in quite a few years, so I'm very interested to experiment with it
The leather on my klemans is nice but doesn’t have quite the character
technically speaking i can also say this and yet i want a pair of black camions now lol
also black loafers are the perfect shoe change my mind (actually don't this is my hill to die on)
Zeo did u see the 3sixteen boots
I really need some simple black loafers
I have some horsebits I thrifted, some chunky solovairs
But no simple pennies
i'll take it thanks
I set up a tassel Alden filter ages ago with no hits yet
I'm just biding my time
i'll help you with that
Haha not so fast cowboy
I haven’t turned completely
u saw me wearing mine and were like aw hell no
So true
But actually it’s white women in Williamsburg
white women in williamsburg :mruncanny:
white women in bushwick :mrcanny:
Exactly
many people are saying this
this is the thread takeaway i think. wearing black is nice sometimes if you wanna emphasize shape/cut/silhouette and texture while controlling for color, but also not nice if you're neurotic like me and need your pieces to coordinate perfectly
it's like how there's a million shades of off-white like ecru, eggshell, bone, ivory, etc the same is true for black people just don't give them cute names
yeah i dont really care about matching my blacks like that tbh
unless its a really obviously not deep col.or
@Salo I get this but it only bugs me if the top is a darker black the bottom
The reverse is fine
oh huh
i'm sure there's some sort of gradient rule at play subconsciously
age old advice used to be to make your outer layers darker than your inner layers so i wonder if that carries for top to bottom as well
I will say outside total black outfits and black footwear I think its fun to use black to force large contrast
Make another piece really shine
Its kinda boring but my favorite jeans to wear with my exotic leather cowboy boots are just my black wranglers
Same can be taken to mostly black outfits with a striking white shirt or something
Saw some like dumb on IG to avoid this because it’s waiter-coded and it’s wormed it’s way into my brain annoyingly
Used to love a white tee, black jeans fit
Ah man I dont really feel that way tbh
Usually it's the black button up that gets the waiter comparison
That’s good!! I didn’t used to but now it really stops me up. I think if literally any of ur silhouette is non conventional that concern goes out the window tho
True black button ups r hard I only have 1
And it’s a camp collar with broderie anglaise on it so feels p safe
I think this is one reason so many avant garde dressers like big ol silver jewlery imo
it contrasts way harder with black than gold
if i make it to next round i'm wearing 3 black button ups
i know that sounds like a threat but it isn't
Im just scrollin on my explore page real quick for examples but this is cool
goofy hat but
I feel like the scarf wouldnt pop nearly as much if it wasnt for the jacket
i like this until i look at it more
Same
was the first one I saw lol
closing my eyes to keep in that childlike sense of wonder
The black on the tip the shoes kinda makes it like
The edge of the whole outfit is black? It’s weird. Anyway, to ur point I couldn’t agree more
Scarf would just bleed into the shirt
I like this
It’s just more neutral
Crop out everything else
which fits in w the whole all black don’t need to coordinate colors stuff
It just looks cleaner than gold to me
better lighting and sea of white tulips is lovely
talk about making a single color pop
black is great
you could say a lot of colours carry many descriptors, but i don't think any of them stand up to black personally
black is many things
i like black
Black good. I have a ton of it - pants, shirts, jeans, jackets, suits, shoes, accessories
I really really like the look of polished black leather. Black leather shoes, black leather belts.
i have way too much black, but i like it
i style around it, use it as a base tone and use it to make other colors pop
or i'll pair it with something predominantly white for contrast to make whatever colored print or so might be on it pop
cheat codded colour
Cute!!
Can’t believe the meme hasn’t been posted yet
