Off Trend - Topic of the day 4/1/24
What's something 'off-trend' that you refuse to let go of? Bonus points if it's not related to width of pants.

I held onto my GATs long enough for them to come back into style
White minimalist sneakers, t shirts with blazers
Iron rangers, beckmans, red wing moc toes, service boots. All leather heritage gyw boots. Nike Killshots, I’ll dabble with the urban lumberjack look still (pants aren’t slim though, usually). Dark raw denim.
I still don't have a good sense of what's off-trend. When I do learn, it makes me a little sad, and triggers my contrarian nature.
I kind of feel the same way but I think of stuff I was wearing 10 years ago that I still wear today and I'm fairly certain those things are off trend
Ah guilty of dark raw denim too
I like dark wash and light wash. Not a huge fan of mid wash at the moment.
I still generally like the bizcas, "heritage," Americana look of the 2010s. I just like those pieces with a looser fit. No regrets
Still wearing my PNW boots, raw denim, flat caps and merz / homespun henleys.
I feel like Aldens have totally fallen off in trendiness. Which is good news for me. More deals to snag on eBay.
Alden loafers are still popular in some circles
But Indy’s, lwb, and tanker boots are less popular
For the most part I discount the idea of on/off trend these days. There's so many niches and circles that just about anything is on or off depending on the group you're discussing.
Slim fit is out. Unless the mid-town/corporate uniform is the prevailing style in your circles.
Workwear is out. Unless you're incorporating western elements.
Alden is out. Unless you're into prep/ivy.
Raw denim is out. Unless you're into repro stuff. Or wearing it with tailoring like The Anthology. Or incorporating western stuff like Brycelands. Or you're a denim head.
The only thing that really feels out and dated in a bad way rn is the slim fit raw denim and a lot of the minimalism approaches from the ~mod 2010s. Even then @walker gets off tons of fits along those lines and they're great. And yet still I think there's a lot of good inspo that can be found from those eras if you just change the silhouette a little bit.
i have some vaguely SLP shirting and sl*m f*t black jeans that i keep for a rainy day.
they're fun clothes and i think that's worth it
yeah that wasn't a fully formed thought. You hit some of the minimalism and tapered looks, but really in a good way. Not a midtown look or anything lol
Expanding on this, with the proliferation of sources of fashion inspiration, in addition to local communities, I'd like to see further discussion of what being on-trend means -- why it's meaningful-- to poeple.
Trends are good unless I can’t afford them, then they’re bad
I dont know whats on or off trend like beans n rice said. But I got another pair of LHS and they’re staying.
I have no idea what's on trend. I browse brands I like, look at lookbooks, browse WAYWT but if it doesn't enter my head through osmosis I'm not researching trends.
The transition from slim to straight trousers after joining MFAD, and some experimentation with :wiiide: is as close as I've gotten.
I've never owned any, but I think SLP Wyatts and double monks are really cool.
(I disgree that Aldens are off trend lol but it goes against my larger point)
Compared to sambas or something they are, but in my discord echo chamber they’re HOT HOT HOT
Selvedge denim and boots. Heritage workwear shit in general :ohyes:
Interesting seeing people mention things like workwear being off-trend when it's still influencing runways a ton
i think when people talk about workwear being off trend they're talking about this sort of thing
Pretty sure you change the fit on that jacket, change the boots up and you're still good to go. I get dark wash isn't as in, but it's pretty classic and those look like a straight fit. Like it doesn't feel that off and utility pants and all sorts of work jackets are still pretty now
I just pretty-ed 3x. Pretty beetlejuice coming
I think in updated cuts it would look fine and more current, but it's still 2014 workwear vibes. things, at least generally, have kind of evolved past this
especially with the CDBs
That was my most non-iffy feedback 🙂 But it also doesn't take a lot
and in 15 years it's back again...
It's not really tho? It's not the same fit if you size up on the jacket, change the shoes, and move to a wider repro cut on the denim. Like you can flip a brick but this fit is not back in style
It's not the same, but it's not drastic either. Sizing up on the coat is minor. The color could still work. The style of the jacket in general. It's not like the short-lived epaulets on jackets and shirts and no amount of adjustment would make that seem fashionable now. The jeans aren't going from flares to skinny. It's just not that drastic.
The 15 years comment was from today, so ~25 from then. My kids would have killed for my late 90s clothes
