What are you getting out of this server? - Topic of the day 3/25/24
Let's get a lil meta. How do you use/contribute to/interact with this server. What do you like/not like about it? Would you say the server has contributed to or changed your personal style and how you think about getting dressed?

I get to argue with people on the internet and they get extremely mad
Its very fun
My eBay spending has never been worse. My style has gotten miles better tho bc posting to #waywt is so easy. I also think the advice is given and received is much better in this format
I also get serious fashion discussion, to talk to people with the same interest and very different perspectives, and a ton of valuable feedback
In like a week
Oh WHAT am I getting out of this server
Definitely feeling like I'm filtering out some of the more unconventional elements of my wardrobe, which feels a little disheartening at first, but I think I'm refining the vision here
I like the people here for the most part
And I dislike the 5 conversations that come up once a week (looksmaxxing bad, etc.)
i've grown up w/ forum communities so mfa migrating to discord im a big fan of in terms of being able to interact w/ people more intimately and it's def unlocked fashion more for me
I will never financially recover from the inspo and recent purchases channels
good advice. different perspectives. rationalization and enabling for buying too many clothes. 🙂
*too many tweed blazers. I think I'm up to 5 now.
Keeps me a little more in touch with designer fashion that I don't normally interact with, pushes me to get photos of my fits, gives me a nice distraction when I'm supposed to be working, helps me rationalize my ebay shopping addiction.
FYI all here that tomorrow will be "What do you want to get out of this server?"
(adding context so you know we've got that discussion in the queue)
oh free stuff 100%
EXPERTISE. I've made some mistakes, but I've also gotten some invaluable help and avoided some missteps. In particular, @GSH for ivy/academic stuff and secondhand shopping, @Diggs for milsurp, and I'm sure some others that I'm overlooking right now (sorry!).
Love all the inspo here especially - it's helped me reflect on my own style quite a bit, has pushed me out of my own comfort zone, and i love seeing how others' styles grow and evolve too. and i don't do it that often, but pointing people in the right direction when they're just starting out feels nice. i deeply appreciated that help from this community when i first started exploring clothes.
gaining more information on clothes and different events happening, as well just general lurking for fun
I get to see people who dress more creatively than me and steal their best ideas
A ton of inspiration, a ton of random brands(and sales) I wouldn’t have splurged on otherwise. People and outfits to copy.
I try and respond to questions I feel “good enough” to answer. The interest threads I follow are also fun. Not posting outfits because I’m too lazy to get a tripod and make it easier
Use a coffee mug
Im here to chat w people who also like the thing i like
Cause thats not around me irl
I've definitely seen "emulate not imitate" play out in wawyt and enjoy seeing how people adapt various style cues for themselves
I decided in January that I wanted to post 20 waywts this year, and I think I’m up to like 25 already. I do think the process has actually really helped my dressing, just over the last few months.
Being exposed to lots of different styles, reading conversations and having them about fashion as I don't know people personally with that interest. Also learning a bunch about different styles, brands, and deconstructing notions about style I've built over the years (what is "okay" vs wearing what you want)
It has really helped me express myself, thank you all for that. I went from a small world of possibilities to a much much larger one and it’s scary but also exciting
Definitely. I think one of my favorite waywt themes was dressing like another MFAer. It was so fun seeing how people perceive each other’s styles and watching them reinterpret that
Inspiration, information, a more organic understanding of how people arrive at their personal styles, and a community of people with similar interests. Seeing why and how people are wearing their clothes is just as fascinating as what they are wearing.
Too bad I'll never post a wawyt (not completely true, I just don't think it will be anytime soon)
:post: :fit:
more knowledge and more confidence, both in the fits themselves and enjoying fashion as a personal hobby
plus some decent ig follows and good buys 🔥
also i cannot emphasize enough how much i prefer discord to reddit as a platform for mfa
dopamine
i will be real i don't post much! but when i do it's a lot of questions. and then i rattle on about being insecure that the size brackets i can default to easiest are the women's despite the fact that this is very much a queer-safe space. the fear is Bad homies but i do get answers at the end of the day and it makes me happy. i've been learning quite a bit
reading about the pursuit of self-expression through personal style of many people here has made me try to be more focused and intentional in the pursuit of mine, play it less safe, and have more fun with what i already own.
i suppose that taking photos outside has made me a bit less self-conscious. shout out to the high-schoolers that heckle every time i'm taking photos around lunch time and to my neighbour who called the cops on me.
called the cops???
yep. had been out for 5 minutes and a cop car stopped to ask me what i was doing
i am assuming someone called them as i had never seen a cop car on my street
Having to talk to cops to explain you’re taking a fit pic sounds like a real bad time
yeah, it triggered some anxiety for sure but they left almost as quickly as they arrived after i pointed to my phone sitting on a ledge across from me. it is red so it blended with its background
Well that’s good! Admittedly, I get nervous taking fit pics on my balcony sometimes because I don’t want my neighbors to think I’m that vain
for sure, i'm pretty shy when it comes to stuff like this as well, but after the cops and the heckling it has gotten easier and I'm taking photos more often
Love this arc for you
its nice to take a more active role in improving style, and to glean perspectives from more experienced folks
I like the WAYWT channel and that everyone can post anytime instead of the fixed threads three times a week on Reddit.
I also enjoy the different styles people have and the fashion knowledge.
I just ordered wider pants (and won't get them tapered) for the first time, because of you guys.
This community started at a point where I was trying to figure out my style again after covid, a cross-country move, and starting to explore my queerness more intentionally. I really had no business participating the way I did at the start but you were all kind and supportive (between the shitposts) and being a part of this community has helped me break out of my comfort zone, even if I have a lot more room to grow.
I love finding and exploring new brands that I would not otherwise know to exist
Even if it's not a brand that I'm in to, fun to see other things outside of The Algorithm™️
I think I recently was looking at the "flip a brick" article and I really appreciate how willing some people are to document their style journey. It's really moving for me especially because I'm still at the relative beginning of my journey and it's clear to see that there's a long way to go
