How would you set it up?

choose a OS first, it's a big factor

whats the best OS for a minecraft server?

Eternal11mo ago
windows -> your casual windows server setup, a bit limited and the only good free dashboard is craftycontroller linux -> more resources for your server, a bigger hassle to use but a bigger enviroment of dashboards linux saves up more space for your server
GMR
GMROP11mo ago
i was gonna buy 1 tb for storage
Eternal
Eternal11mo ago
?? you don't need 1tb of disk for a server
GMR
GMROP11mo ago
ik lol but just in case ima go with windows then
Eternal
Eternal11mo ago
sure we usually suggest linux here though
GMR
GMROP11mo ago
oh how much storage do you recommend btw then ill go with linux
Eternal
Eternal11mo ago
it depends minigame server? you wouldn't even use 200gb unless if you're hypixel if you ask me smp? mine uses 150gbish
GMR
GMROP11mo ago
hmm ok what else should i know and when i do get linux instaled, i wont have a monitor connected to the compouter where it will be hosted, so how would i manage the server

How do you plan on setting up the second computer? Before you can manage the server you have to set it up, do you have any plans on how you'll do that?

What is your purpose for the server? If you’re planning to make a casual SMP type server for some friends, you may find Windows OS easier to navigate. If you have experience using Linux, that would be the highest recommended but you may very well confuse yourself if you jump into Linux headfirst. Chassis looks sufficient, my only suggestion would be to possibly increase the RAM amount. Once again, however, this solely depends on what your planned usage is for this server.

GMROP11mo ago
Ok Yea windows is the way to go then lol , but how do I control the server from a separate computer

if the main purpose for this new machine is for servers, u should learn linux and use linux for it. you can setup a panel like pterodactyl and it'll let u have pretty much full access to the server remotely via a webbrowser if the main purpose of the new machine is for non server related things, and u also want to use it as a server on the side, then yeah, use windows. I would highly recommend the AMP panel (its a very very cheap 1 time payment) , and similarly access via a web browser

for learning linux, i would recommend getting a free vps from oracle cloud and playing around with it, there's a good guide on https://www.setup.md/guides/oracle-cloud you can follow to use oracle cloud and setting up a mc server with it

Deer Jerky11mo ago
would probably go the linux route then ubuntu I think is a good place to start
GMR
GMROP11mo ago
Alright then
Jyrotec
Jyrotec11mo ago
Yeah if it’s just for servers, Linux is the way to go. Really depends on the purpose of the servers and how many you plan on running
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
im gonna try the oracle cloud thing to test out mods for servers and to get familiar with linux and once i get used to it and i have the pc built, ill install ubuntu onto the pc and start the server in a tech server, big tech server, they suggested to get 64 gb of ram used, it cost the same as 32 gb new
Deer Jerky
Deer Jerky10mo ago
I mean ram is ram
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
and i could host more servers or add the multiverse thing mod
Deer Jerky
Deer Jerky10mo ago
Yeah if your cpu can handle more
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
to add minigames and such
Deer Jerky
Deer Jerky10mo ago
Yes
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
that’s fine I guess How many servers or players do you plan on managing?
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
atleast one server for sure lol, and im working on a server that has something for everyone like creative world for builders, smp and more
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
Alright 16-32GB should be fine then
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
but the 64 gb kits are like 70 usd
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
2 servers with a small-moderate player count
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
an 32 it 80
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
alright sure then just determining your memory usage based on your planned usage
Eternal
Eternal10mo ago
32-64 is enough for 3 servers. however I suggest leaving something around 1-4gb for the operating system
Astral
Astral10mo ago
32-64gb of ram?
Eternal
Eternal10mo ago
you probably won't need all 64
Astral
Astral10mo ago
You can get like 20 server out of that lol
Eternal
Eternal10mo ago
sure you could make a freehost and compete with caner
Astral
Astral10mo ago
Oh 👀 I like competing
Eternal
Eternal10mo ago
my assumption was 12-16gb for each server
Astral
Astral10mo ago
Jesus... Is this modded servers? Or just really high player count servers
Xen
Xen10mo ago
You could manage it remotely or from the PC you’re hosting it on. Install a distro of linux (I just use Ubuntu) and setup SSH. From there, you should be able to SSH into the server and make changes remotely that way. Or just make the changes directly on the server itself. It’s not recommended to do self-hosting unless it’s for a small group of friends or something.
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
I’ve run a maximum of 8-10 servers at once with 32gb, the JRE will utilize ram efficiently, especially on off hours so as long as you have the actual ram available that you have allocated, you’ll be fine Obviously, self hosting would never be a good idea for larger scale servers but if OP just wants to create a server/servers for assorted purposes with what seems like would currently be a small to mid player base, self hosting will do fine, especially on a dedicated server. Granted, make sure there are protective measures in place for your home network if this is going to be a public server. I would also recommend stress testing the JRE on the host machine somehow just to see exactly how much it would be able to handle based on your needs.

i dual booted linux to my computer to play with the plugins to have them ready so whats next in making a server in linux modded verry modded, my server which is the main one im hosting, will be like multi world , minigames, creative world, skyblock and more im trying to make a server that has something for everyone
NedHuman
NedHuman10mo ago
isnt self hosting a public server like a very bad idea?
Eternal
Eternal10mo ago
dualbooting for a minecraft server isn't a good idea a better way would be to use spare hardware
ProGamingDk
ProGamingDk10mo ago
one that isnt meant for friends only usually yes
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
also a heavily modded server with multiple worlds is bound to be incredibly resource consuming And I don’t know if you mean mods or plugins but there’s a huge difference Instead of using a multi world server, setup a proxy such as Waterfall of velocity
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
plugins ik but just to play with the plugins, and to use local host so how could i make it more secure
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
ok and when you say a lot of plugins, how many plugins is that? You’re dead set on making a publicly advertised server?
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
i wanna grow a community, and ill also use that server for my twitch streams
Jyrotec
Jyrotec10mo ago
Then grow the community in a more private fashion first Setup a white list and grow the community by word of mouth If it grows nicely and you gain some funding, buy a host and set it up fully publicly
Skullians
Skullians10mo ago
If you want to run a public server Then it definitely isn’t recommended to self host on your personal network Use a free host, like Endelon, mcho.st or fps.ms They are good free hosts (don’t use aternos or minehut) with good hardware and don’t shut down every 5 minutes If you want to go the extra mile, which is much more technical, complicated, requires a credit card (it is free but it requires a credit card) you can get an Oracle Cloud free tier server with 4 ARM OCPU cores and 24GB ram with 200gb storage, but that is much harder
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
i was trying to make ann account on oracle but it wont let me so i emailed them
Skullians
Skullians10mo ago
What does it say when you try create an account
GMR
GMROP10mo ago
after t verifies my card it just kicks me back to the start ill try with a different one
Skullians
Skullians10mo ago
For example, oracle will reject you if your address + name is different to your billing address + name I know someone who forgot an accent on their name and they got rejected

i can select up to 64 gb heeh oh no who to ask doesnt work 😦 out of capacity can i try with amd or does it have to be arm
ProGamingDk

dont that wont be free 24 gb ram 4vcores and 200 gb storage is whats free has to be arm, AMD only gives 1 gb ram

no follow that guide i sent you only do 4 ARM ocpu cores and 24gb ram don't do ANYTHING over that or you will get charged a LOT
Deer Jerky
Deer Jerky10mo ago
There's literally no server capacity
QarthO

yes and no, servers drop every second, and servers are created every second, so u just gotta keep trying and eventually you'll get one

QarthO10mo ago
the last ~3 times ive done it, ive just had the form filled out, and every like 10min i just his submit, and usually get it in a couple of hours its annoying ya, but its a pretty good vps considering how its literally free obviously ur not gonna be able to host a 50player server, but if its something smaller for a friend group its quite perfect
GMR

it will cost 2 dollars a month i thought it was free and thats for the boot volume

if it hasn't already been mentioned, pterodactyl is a good standard for the panel which is a very easy way to manage your servers. it operates in much the same way a host would without needing to pay. it has a solid setup guide and the ptero discord is very helpful in fixing almost any problems and answering questions you have.
