Favorites Series: Peacoats - Topic of the day 2/16/24

What are your favorite peacoats? Favorite brands at low medium and high price points? What do you look for in an peacoat? What brands have been great for them and what brands have really let you down? (Note: the Favorites Series will be running ~weekly as a new way of doing the "Best X for $X" threads from a few years ago on MFA.)

what do people think about the schott ones (new or vintage)?

My first peacoat was a Schott and I kept it for like 8 years until I got the Private White bridge coat. It was still looking good and I gave it to someone else who still wears it. Other than a WWII or post-WWII era Kersey wool peacoat some others I really like are: the Real McCoys, Buzz Ricksons, SEH Kelly and Freewheelers.

I have the spier & mackay melton peacoat in black, super happy with it. 90% wool, 10% cashmere, bemberg lining. Looks like they're running ~$400 right now which seems medium/low for a peacoat. I did pick up some of their wool scarves that I'm not as happy with. Kinda wish I got the bond peacoat though super pumped to hear about the favorites series coming back! That was my favorite content on reddit

My wife found me US Navy peacoat at Goodwill for like 20 bucks. It’s older than my grandfather, and it’s some of the physically heaviest wool I’ve ever felt (to the point that it’s snapped a few hangers.) It’s one of my absolute favorite pieces, and probably the only time thrifting has worked for me.

When looking for vintage USN peacoats i recommend seeking out something 70’s or older. They use kersey wool which is generally regarding as being high quality

I'm here to tell you the Bond Peacoats are so annoying. The fabric and pattern are good but there is no lining so you're fighting your shirt sleeves every time you put it on.

Going against the grain here. I think the Bond Peacoat pocket placement makes it an ugly pattern

It's definitely a more modern take imo but I'm also not really into peacoats atm so the annoyance at a lack of lining is really my only thoughts on the matter

I'm not exactly sure how I'd style a peacoat but I feel like I've seen @upsett1_spaghett1 🍝 style them really well in waywt so gonna go find those fits

Not really an answer to the question but on the topic of peacoats: I have a J Crew Peacoat from like 2010 that's woefully too small for me now (both due to me aging and fashion moving on from the slim fit era), plus I feel like Peacoats in general are just out of style right now. But I have such affection for it because I've had it for my whole adult life that I can't bring myself to get rid of it 😭

It's actually quite well made even if it doesn't have any real stylistic flair, as was pretty typical of J Crew from this era I feel like. Been repaired and cleaned a bunch over the years. Idk just the story of a garment I guess!

I followed Digs' advice and got a 70s era USN peacoat. It needed some repair work, but he is 100% right -- the wool is beautiful. It's hard to do it justice with words, or even pictures, but I'm guessing you'd have to spend $1000 to get something new that's comparable. It cost me around $200 with cleaning and repairs. Favorite detail is corduroy lining in the pockets.
