Bazzite 39 KDE Desktop freezing when playing recent proton games
so yesterday I tried to play Lethal company for the first time with steam proton, and it kept freezing the entire PC when trying to enter the game past the menu screen and id have to restart the pc with the power button. Today I tried enshrouded (also using proton) and it was working at first the few times i tried running it, and then hours later i had to restart the game and now when i tried to load into a game from the main menu it freezes the pc every single time, i cant even load into the game world from the main menu to play anymore.

What branch of bazzite are you on? Does your PC use NVIDIA?
I use AMD
It's still happening on Lethal Company, Enshrouded and Tower Unite. Entire PC is freezing multiple times a day on these 3 games. Which all use proton. I even tried using proton GE, didnt fix it.
Desktop version
Bazzite 39
everything is on latest update
all the latest proton games are essentially unplayable due to the freezing and having to hard reset my pc constantly
palworld didnt seem to have that issue much though for some reason
i have 16GB ram, and amd rx 6800 xt gpu
I've never had this issue before both on windows or linux, only ever experienced this with bazzite
Can you run
rpm-ostree status -v | fpaste
and paste the resulting url here?
I did have some issues like that a long time ago idk what happened but still
You can try using another runner like Proton-GE and see if the issue still persists
I really dont know what might be causing this but apparently something didnt like your hardwarei've also been experiencing random hard freezes in bazzite gnome desktop - also using all AMD (R9 7950X3D + 7900XTX). though for me, it doesnt seem related to playing any particular games.
however, i've had an issue where
winedevice.exe
(launched by steam via proton) does not exit, and is immune to kill -9 [PID]
...also some games like apex don't cleanly shutdown, and crash and leave processes open, which then prevents steam from opening new games. not sure if its related (memory leak? i have 64gb of ram so might explain why it takes a while longer to crash my system)I am using proton GE
you mean this? "ostree-image-signed:docker://ghcr.io/ublue-os/bazzite:39 " "Version: 39.20240210.0"
I tried using the regular proton also and same issue
so it seems to be happening in gnome and kde, as im using kde
im not an expert on this stuff, but im wondering if theres a memory leak also
I can easily reproduce the freezes in all 3 games i mentioned, sometimes the programs crash as well and not simply freeze
I know its another distro and an old post, but this person has the same issue I have, https://forum.manjaro.org/t/proton-games-freezing-entire-system-randomly/70724
Manjaro Linux Forum
Proton Games freezing entire system randomly
As the title says, my entire system freezes on seemingly random when playing games trough proton, the freeze will almost always happen, but how long I can play for before it freezes is uncertain and changing. inxi output: System: Kernel: 5.12.9-1-MANJARO x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 11.1.0 parameters: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-5.12-x86...
From some reading of people with similar issues people suggest disabling the compositor but i dont know how to do that, can someone help me try it?
While this isn't disabling the compositor, you could try
gamemoderun
for your steam games, which would enable some power settings for performance.

The internet tells me that shift+alt+F12 will toggle the compositor enabled/disabled in KDE plasma
I tried that, but I cant actually tell if it did anything or not? How do i truly know if its off?
Im using these settings for steam, am I typing it in properly? I'm not sure if theres a certain order the commands need to be in? DXVK_ASYNC=1 gamemoderun %command% -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -heapsize 6291456 -refresh 60 -nojoy -noipx -NOTEXTURESTREAMING
I tried putting the gamemoderun in there as you can see above, but the game wont launch with it in the settings, so maybe i put it in the wrong spot.
This looks correct for ordering, though, I'm not familiar with most of the extra commands here. Do you have an error, if you kill steam and launch steam from commandline (run the command
steam
from a terminal), then try to launch the game? Usually some extra information is printed to the terminal. We don't ship gamemode
System 76 scheduler replaces it
my bad. I thought it was in there, I might just be thinking of lutris' toggle for it.
ok, well I only added gamemode after zero chill suggested it, i removed it again.
I'm having this happen during gameplay as well "Xwayland has crashed" notifications, but not always.
Aidditionally one of the games utilizes youtube in game functionality that if turned on, appears to create additional lag/crashes/freezing, and I'm not sure how to fix this
so what is that game user interface called?
gamemode
but you said you don't ship gamemode
feral gamemode
we don't ship it
is that what steamos uses?
no
its gamescope
not gamemode
so, I switched to another distro, and im not having any of the issues (including the ones in this thread) that I had on bazzite. my mic is working better in games now, no crashes, no freezes, no lag. the main desktop is faster, browser and youtube videos work normally inside games now, can easily bring up the steam interface while inside a game now. from my experience there are definitely bugs on a default bazzite fresh install, and from other peoples reports id assume perhaps some of the bugs have to do with the users hardware (or perhaps they started on an older version, and there was some type of borked updates in a newer version) since some people claim their install is fine but at the end of the day, for me at least its like looking for a needle in a haystack that ill never find to fix it. but funny enough at the end of the day even with the bugs, bazzite was still running games better than windows did
This is really interesting. Especially in terms of all the audio improvements as well. Glad to hear that you aren't having hardware trouble and that the new distro got your problems sorted out!
what a weird thing really
im happy that everything is alright now
maybe there was some driver that reeeally didnt like your system
curiousity, what distro?
what issues were you getting with audio? I'm having some weird audio issues on bazzite that I didn't use to have on arch, so I'm curious.
nobara
okay thanks for letting me know. same idea of a linux OS imo. Gaming-focused Fedora but instead of being based off of Fedora Atomic, it's the tradtional Workstation setup. glad thats working for you
this is my current experience of what I tried with my setup: Nobara>bazzite>manjaro>windows. mind you, there are some flaws with nobara, their discord is barely active, and most people post about it on reddit.. and apparently the distro is only maintained by one person. Anyway overall the experience has been way better than anything else I've tried.
with bazzite, in game youtube videos would often freeze/crash the games and or the entire pc. Often people could not hear my microphone, it constantly was cutting off what I'm saying where they only hear the first part of what I say the moment I press the push to talk button. It was so bad that I had to press the button for EVERY word and speak like a robot with pauses between the words for them to hear me.
Sounds pretty similar to my issue, albeit much much worse. What audio hardware were you using?
the same issues here, proton games crashes after Seconds and the PC freezes
why would bazzite be buggier than nobara
you are asking the wrong person, i dont create linux distributions so i wouldnt be able to answer that 🙂 but maybe someone else can
I'm curious what your hardware/specs are?
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900x, GPU RX6900xt, Mainboard: MSI X570 A-Pro
I have similar freeze issues but not in game. It seems to happen after about an hour of using the desktop. Mouse starts freezing, sticking and just random freezes. I typically reboot and it's back to normal. Using bazzite-nvidia
