I do hate the name
Its just a different way to say bookcore or whatever it was last year
Yeah I feel like Derek articulated this strain of style already
I also hate the name, this is just Ivy but for people who have a sense of whimsy
I feel like eclectic grandpa is a little more colorful than bookcore which is a more casual dark academia. But all these names and micro trends are essentially meaningless in the end.
And all are some specific Ivy derivative
I’ll be honest, I really like the name
"eclectic grandpa" and "quiet outdoors" just sound like roasts, and ones that hit close to home

i truly don't understand how this is any different from thrifting

I don’t think most of these micro trends are anything new. Just repackage something specific based off of a few mood board images and give it a catchy name. Then the Pinterest and TikTok algorithms take over.

I wonder if this microtrend (of which, tbh, this is the first I’m hearing) there’s a kind of fusion of a distrust of the flimsy, meretricious present and a disavowal of the conservative rigidity of the past. Like perhaps fashion these days feels too fast, too surface-level, too many options, novelty obsessed and irrelevant in the blink of an eye, all of which might make the fantasy of grandpa’s closet full of enduring mid century uniforms, nostalgic and sturdy, seem like an attractive alternative, but subtract the pearl clutching of transgression and add the ecclecticism of the current vibe, the grandpa who gets it.

How many peeps seen does it take to constitute a microtrend? Because I want sporty grandpa to happen.
it really reminds me of all the thousands of little music genres. like for me it’s just rock or punk or metal but other people think it’s something completely different. which I’m cool with, just different.

I think the idea is good and the only thing that makes it feel sad is the fleeting nature associated with the word trend
Man. I remember last year I had a guy in my class who dressed every day in full period 60's suits. I eventually asked him what the deal with his clothes was.
And he said "look wool is warm, but bloody expensive. My grandfather died recently. I'm broke. His wardrobe fit me. I stole the entire wardrobe."
That's kind of the most pure grandpa-core I have ever seen lmao.

I also think that grandpa-style as a trend is a product of the fact that when thrifting things cos you are broke, you are going to encounter a lot of things that are well made, but also from the closet of someone who is either dead or on death's door.
It's a collection of cool experiences, a storybook of life that you get to play out in aesthetic form
Yeah. I also thinks it's a really cool experience to be able to wear clothes that were made before you were born and still have a lot of life left in them.
Also no one is truly able to like hop from trend to trend as fast as they go
Except for influencers or people who just get a ton of stuff shipped to them/buy a lot
Style takes a long time to develop ofc
I just want to say I was cultivating this before it became a thing.
