Cowboy Boots, vintage/new what brands should I be looking at?
Like almost everything I own, I'll be purchasing them second-hand, I just know nothing about the cowboy boot industry. Brands to add to my searches are appreciated!

Rios of Mercedes and lucchese are the nicest of the non-single guy making boots brands that I know
Dan post isn’t as nice, but can be purchased for like $30 on eBay, too.
Lucchese had the 1883, 2000, and classics lines, in increasing order of “niceness.”
Further down you have tecovas, which are basically the meermin of cowboy boots, according to my understanding as someone who hasn’t owned any
If you're buying second hand, miUSA Justin boots are good. Lucchese is great, Dan Post is good, a good value for your money and petty common on eBay. I've owned quite a few brands over the years, Lucchese and Dan Post fit me the best.
Also heads up, most boot brands run 1/2 size large. So if you're a 12, get an 11.5
@Duff is the resident cowboy boot expert right?
Lucchese and Rios are both v good. Older Noconas are good. Chisos is good, but kinda ugly
Yo, how may I be of service?
Forget Lucchese, unless you’re buying them vintage. Rios is good, and so are Chisos.
But, before recommending brands, which isn’t really the way to go when it comes to buying cowboy boots, especially second-hand, what are you looking for in a pair of cowboy boots?
I’m talking about leather, color, style, toe shape, heel, etc
Also, do you even know what your size is in cowboy boots?
Black leather, open to lots of different types: lizard, smooth ostritch, etc.
Pointed toe, Cuban heel, taller the better.
And I’m a 8.5 in cowboy boots!
I’m no rush for them, so I’m building an eBay search and will slowly make offers/bids as ones I like pop up.
8.5D?
Yeah

Western Cowboy Boots. Color : Black Cherry. Condition : Boots are in great conditions. Other than normal signs of wear / age, no significant flaws.
For the sake of variety, I threw in some black cherry ones as well.
Black tends to limit things, especially how versatile they can be. I feel like dark browns and burgundy shades tend to be a lot more versatile, but that’s just me.
+1 for black cherry
Just got a pair and really like them
Ok, I’m gonna throw in two more boots

@kmn (41°50'31.2"N 89°29'09.4"W) lmk which ones you pick I’m also gonna buy
You the same size?
I think? I measure 8.5 but I haven’t gotten sized in any western boots
Go to a boot barn or any western store and try on a few before buying.
Do western boots all generally follow the same-ish fit?
Same fit to what, though?
They’re more in line with dress shoes than any other kind of footwear, I’ve found
Each other I guess? I just wouldn’t have expected for someone to be a 8.5 in western boots as a whole. Similar to other styles of boot/leather shoes
For example: in most lace up boots, I’m a 9 D/E, depending on a number of things. But with cowboy boots, I’m always a 9EE, because I can’t wear cowboy boots without orthotics. I have a very low instep/arch, so the boots have nothing to grab onto for a good fit
Interesting! Even across brands?
Most classic brands tend to fit similarly, but that can still differ, depending on the model, style, and toe shape
It’s always good to get fitted and try different boots in person.
I’ve tried on a number of 9D cowboy boots, a lot of which are a bit too snug, but some fit surprisingly well, if not for my problem with the low instep.
Cool thanks for the help!
Anytime

A little tricky trying to tell the condition of the sole (photo is kinda blurry), but for $35, why the heck not?
If you ended up getting them, make sure you use the right conditioning product for them. Lizard needs a different type of conditioner than bovine. Check on the cowboy boots subreddit. A quick search will give you plenty of good recommendations. After a good conditioning (which these boots will need), might be worth taking them to a decent cobbler to stick on some sole savers. It’ll greatly lengthen the life until you have to do an actual resole or a re-heel, depending on the condition and how hard you wear them.
Bickmore (makes Bick 4) has different formulations for exotic leathers. I don't have any direct experience
