Black screen running on PC via Quest Link
I am setting up a lab to run open brush with students. When the Quest 2 is connected via the oculus link cable to the PC open Brush opens but the enviroment is black and there are no menues loading on the controles. The PC also shows a black screen with the Open Brush logo in the lower left corner.

@tburr What time zone are you on? Might be easier to discuss in realtime. I'm UTC+0
UTC+11. Melbourne, Australia
i'm free in about 20m if you're still around?
Can do but the set-up is at work so there is not much I can do now
i just wanted to get a few more details off you. mainly what open brush version you're running and what things you've tried
also - try tilt brush and/or multibrush for comparison. try older builds. try running the quest native version rather than the pc version.
just to gather some data points that might give us a clue
and regular PC stuff - disable anti-virus or firewall, check if your user has any weird policy restrictions.
The native quest version works fine. We can't use it though because we need to see what the kids are doing on the monitor.
I in installed it from the PC and tried to run the normal version and beta version via steam Vr and oculus. I tried to run the 1.0 version but I couldn't figure out how to install it.
The PC's are clean with no antivirus software.
I didn't want to pay for tilt brush so I haven't tried that yet.
I can try multi brush tomorrow
Is that built off the same tilt brush back end?
yes - but it's also non-free. there was an ancient pc build floating around this discord but might be easier to just try older Open Brush builds
so - this happens with both SteamVr and Oculus Store versions?
Steam also has a third option:
Did you try "previous"? That's the 1.0 release I believe.
No. I didn't try that on steam.
I will give it a shot tomorrow
It happened with
Both versions
So - you're running the same setup as me and many others. If it's happening consistently to you and not for other people, there has to be something different at your end. It's just a question of figuring out what that is.
Info here on getting the log files: https://docs.openbrush.app/user-guide/troubleshooting-issues-with-open-brush - send me those and I'll take a look
Thanks for the help. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow
I tried the previous version in Steam but the same result occurred .
have you got a non-college PC you could try for comparison? Who installed the PCs originally?
These are the 2 log files I could find
The PC was set up by out IT department. IT is using a windows defender firewall that I can't toggle on or off
I can try my PC at home but the configuration is different
can you try the Oculus Store version and send me the log from that? There's some oodd stuff in those logs and i want to see if it's the same without SteamVR in the frame
Here is one. The other is too large
The link is the second file
@tburr not sure if it's the cause but you're getting a weird error because Open Brush can't find a standard Windows exe called wmic.exe
On my system it's here: C:\Windows\System32\wbem
you should be able to run it directly from the command line:
Odd
it's used to get a unique id for the pc so that the google drive sync doesn't accidentally overwrite files from other PCs
like i said - not sure if this is the cause but it's the first error in your logs and then you get a bunch of other errors that might be triggered by that.
Okay. I will check in with IT and see why that file is missing
it seems like it's deprecated in recent Windows 11
now - i had a new PC last week and that worked fine.
(up until the point it died!)
but that leads me to believe that (assuming it's missing on that system as well) - that it's not the cause
this log is also from a fairly old version. can you try uninstalling the oculus store version and reinstalling it? try the beta this time
i think the oculus store won't downgrade versions unless you uninstall/reinstall
Okay, I will do it when I am back in the office
@tburr did you fix this in the end? A related discussion here: https://discord.com/channels/783806589991780412/1254873982570860584/1258788419849687061
