Extra fabric on back of flannel shirt
So for a dress shirt if there's extra fabric in the back I'd add darts, but I dont think darts on a flannel shirt is a good idea. I leave my flannel shirts untucked and there is this big spoof of air in the back.
I know some of you might say size down but I need to find a size that fits my shoulder and chest and usually that means the waist/lower back area is huge

instead of adding darts, maybe you could have a tailor take it in from the sides?
i've had to do this on some shirts that were just too boxy for my liking and the tailor was able to slim it down at the waist and shorten the hem to make them fit more the way i wanted
post a pic
flannels aren't meant to fit slim, you might be worrying over a non issue
Yeah your flannel shouldn’t be snug through the waist
