Moving from X264 to HEVC

TLDR Currently recording at X264 14 @ 1440P (should be 17 i know) and want to know the equivalent of HEVC for 1440P or recommendations. Also rendering out with Vegas using Voukoder CRF/CQP should i still render out to X264 or change that to HEVC there as well? Hey guys so while i want to use AV1 im not willing to go next gen and theres no cheap intel cards here yet im thinking of moving to HEVC for space savings for recordings due to going from 1080P to 1440P. Right now im using X264 at CQP14 which was a leftover of my old 1080p settings instead of 17 for 1440P (which i should change to 17 if im going to keep using this) After recording i then remux the file to MP4 so Vegas can read it and then render it out using the voukoder plugin, so i can render out again using CRF or CQP (i tend to render with the CPU not minding the wait times) Question is what number should i use if i go with HEVC to keep up with mostly the same quality with a bit of space savings and is there any disadvantage using HEVC over X264 and just wait to go to AV1 instead? Thanks!

16-18 for HEVC. The QP scale does not really change, but the resulting size will be a bit smaller 🙂 It doesent really matter what you chose in so far as quality goes. Its more about what is compatible, and what takes less time/resources. Not familiar with voucoder, or what is avaliable, but yeah. You can use the same scale for them, as long as its in CQP mode. VBR-CQ / CVBR is akin to crf, but the scale is very different (for both of them), so keep that in mind

Hmm well voukoder does have both its a nifty little thing you can take a look here https://www.voukoder.org/ found it in a video a while back been real helpful. Why CQP again? Is there something wrong with using CRF after?

There is nothing inherently wrong with CRF, no. It's more that its likely not available on a lot of encoders. It's also intended for final stuff, so i personally would prefer cqp if it's going to be compressed again (like YouTube). Not really that big if a deal tho, like crf is totally fine 🙂

Thats tgood to know, well after vegas it usually is "final" before youtube but then yeah it compresses again lol doesnt it. I just dunno which number i should use in vegas, if im going to use 18 in OBs i should use 18 again in Vegas?

sure, that sounds fine 🙂 There isn't a correct number here, and since its youtube, it will be deminishing returns. I think its going to be fine 🙂 You can of course push this as far as you'd like, but I wouldnt expect it to make a very large difference if you were to do 14 for instance (and obviously, the files would be significantly larger) 🙂

Yeah thats my problem, im trying to keep the raws and eventually i would like to record full streams. Problem is well X264 is already huge as it is! and hoping HEVC can help alleviate some of that until i can get some form of AV1 (hoping i can pair the PC with a cheap Arc 310 or something) I've already nearly filled a 6TB drive and another with some more too. Plays hell with my storage on my PC too

A)YT shits on 1080p and below on its reencode generally B)if native content is 1440p, not downscaling that is generally ideal for recording

Matters enough to be a constant topic in both this server and the obs server LULWW

It does when I rewatch my recorded 1080p videos and wonder why my YT 1080p looks fuzzy So yea, ever since I hooked up my 1440p monitor to my 1080p laptop I’ve been streaming&rec to YT

I also only just recently uped to 1440p around last year and i never really adjusted settings. As you say even just going from CQP 14 to 17 on X264 alone for 1440P will help and moving to HEVC in the meantime can help too. I really do want an AV1 card but i already had a 3070 for when i moved to NVENC new and... Well this current gen of cards freaking sucks unless your upgrading from an earlier one like 20 series or previous in my opinion. I am trying to find a small intel arc card as a 2nd encoding gpu but they dont seem to be sold on their own. If i didnt care about keeping the raw recordings backed up and just upload them to youtube may be another story as well

It sucks even if upgrading from the 1060 6gb like me. Better to get a 6700-6950XT. Whichever one fits your bill and budget.

Nah i got a 3070, its more for the AV1 efficency id put it next to my 3070 or even try a dual PC setup since i do have a capture card i dont like 4000 or 7000 series and well im hoping the rumors of AMDS next gpu arent true but we'll see
