Dress pants vs Suit Pants
How can I tell if the pants are part of a suit, or they are meant to be worn on their own?

you can wear suit pants on their own it's just not recommended from a wear perspective
well yes, i should have clarified but I go thrifting at times, and there are "orphaned suit jackets" so there are probably "orphaned suit pants" i guess
unless you're buying pinstripes or something that's very clearly a suit piece, i don't think pants really have the same issue as orphaned jackets.
Pants are much easier to wear as separates. The main things I’d avoid would be the fabric being too formal like a v shiny worsted wool.
Basically as said. Most suit pants can be worn separately. Some suit pants are better worn separately. Proper dress pants and suit pants are cut and shaped the same, and by and large made of the same materials.
