Looking for critiques or suggestions for a dedicated Minecraft Server I am building.
My budget is $1000 and after a bit of research this is what I came up with after deciding on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for our CPU. Looking forward to hearing any thoughts or suggestions ❤️

64gb is a bit overkill for just a dedicated server unless ur hosting multiple servers
That is the goal. We will have 3 servers running concurrently at all times with occasional other servers running when we do special things like anarchy servers for a week or two or other random projects
well then you’d probably want a nicer cpu if ur gunna be running 3+ servers
happy to help recommend, but self hosting is not the smartest decision for running a server
Thank you, I'll take any recommendations. We'll have one primary server for survival, and the two others would be less used. One for creative, and one legacy server for a small(ish) community. Why don't you recommend hosting locally, aside from things like DDOS attacks?
It’s a lot of upkeep. Not reliable, expensive upfront cost
power costs, noise,
hardware depreciation
alot more maintenance
hardware replacements in the long run
DDOS attacks are relevant, but like least of ur problems
It’s expensive to self host
Time + money
I've actually decided on the local hosting to help costs in the long run. I've spent the past 12 years spending $15-$20 a month hosting and figured this will be cheaper in the long run since I'll likely do it the rest of my life
it probably wont
You also gotta consider the bandwith
you will also need a business isp plan
It's been working well the past month for our community on a dedicated server built with old hardware I've had laying around. Regardless, I made this post looking for suggestions on the hardware in my PCpartpicker list
which can be not cheap
You’ll need good internet and lots of residential isp plans will limit/throttle u
Yep, I've got an unlimited dataplan so it's also not an issue
"unlimited" dataplan doesnt matter
isp can easily just decide  and just not let u host unless u move to a business isp plan
Well is it truly unlimited? Like they will most likely throttle u after they see ur sending out several tbs of data a month on a residential plan
they would probably just tell him to move to business as they can see it isnt* just personal/home usage
Also residential plans aren’t reliable..
Unscheduled maintenance,
Most plans are shared, so like surges in data usage in ur area can slow u down, etc
Lots of hosts have specific EXPENSIVE plans with isp to prevent this stuff, and the good ones have redundancies/backups incase things happen
Lol this poor guy is getting good advice, but it's also totally not what he's asking for.
He asked!

I'm definitely taking all the advice in! I'd already consulted my ISP about data caps which they said were unlimited but I hadn't considered being throttled. Would they be transparent about that if they were to do something like that after X data uploaded?
what isp do you have
xfinity (lol)
ah yes they will definitely throttle
can tell from personal experience
and they are never transparent but will tell u they are
They have a business plan, which Ive got now, and is SUPER nice and reliable. But its expensive
their business plan (atleast in my area) is nice cause I get a dedicated line for business customers separate than the residential line. And since I live in a rural area, it’s pretty much just me on the line
so they are straight up lying?
Well read it
They don’t throttle based on what u do. That what it says
They don’t say we don’t throttle based on how much u do
ah
yup basically saying “we won’t discriminate”
Like we won’t throttle because u look at adult content, etc
It even says “reasonable practices”
Which. Running multiple online servers on a residential plan is not reasonable
Could you provide me the link you saw that at?
Prob can just Google Xfinity throttling
Also I’m pretty sure Comcast has different rules/regulations in different areas
Although my experience with residential plans is a couple years outdated, so idk if they’ve changed
their Business plan is nice tho! If u got the money
Thank you, if throttling does become an issue it's something I'd look in to
Thankfully it hasn't yet but I'm going to provide a chat agent this link and ask them directly about it
u can technicly get unlimited data for 110 bucks a month
without the downsides of unlimited data
kek
Region dependent
would be hella slow
nono
the thing is
if u get internet essentials right
its 10 bucks
if u then use MORE than 1.2 tb, up to like 2 tb, u get charged another 100 bucks, but after that its fully fre
free*
Yeah, I used to run their unlimited residential plan
oh no this would be abusing their terms
But I was on their 1.2, and after it wassup something like 20$ per 100gb. It was nuts
The first month I breached the limit it was like an extra $400
So I insta got the unlimited
lol
this is what i mean with abuseable
Yeah that clause was not their when I had residential
lol
after 100 bucks spent u get unlimited data kek
Prob throttled tho
Mine was throttled after 1.2tb
well after 1.2tb u would be paying 10 usd per 50 gb
up yo 1,7 tb
Yeah, which realistically OP wil easily hit that number
if running 3 servers
yeah after that it should be free
also yeah go for unlimited or another isp
this was just a funny loophole
Unlimited plan was like an extra $40/month in my area
But regardless, back to the original discussion
For a cheap $1k budget, sure the parts u got is nice
Wouldn't the be oppisite of the "unlimited" data they said I have in my plan?
this isnt the unlimited data plan
gotchya
this is a funny loophole in their normal plans
So, imagining I do have a buisness plan with my ISP, and extra work aside. Any suggsetions on the hardware in my PCpartpicker build?
haven't read the rest of this thread but go buy used imo
if you plan on using this for other stuff, go find a used server platform or something. for $1k, you can get your hands on a full Epyc barebones (CPU/memory/board) kit.
yeah, it's not as amazing for Minecraft specifically (Epyc < Ryzen desktop for single-threaded performance) but you get a ton of value in your other applications.
depend on what epyc kek
just an example tbh. There's a massive dump of Epyc platforms on ebay right now, but at least look into used hardware regardless of what's settled on.
Im self hosted on a AMD Ryzen 5 7600X with 64GB of DDR5 with 2TB NVMe with a 6TB HDD for backups. The whole build was about $1100 from a mixture of Amazon and Newegg.
The upfront cost was only slightly more then the monthly rental price for a bare metal server of similar performance.
Power is cheap we're I host from. (Right next to a hydroelectric dam.)
Using Xfinity home internet for years with a custom network setup. Never had any issues other then garbo upload (~25Mbps) and the occasional script kiddie DoSing the server.
In the latter case, Just log and report the IPs to their abuse email and move on.
In my opinion the biggest cost to self hosting is time. But if you already mess with IT as a hobby it's not bad at all.
My main issue with cloud hosting is trust.
You have to trust your data on someone else's computer.
Ooor get an VPS
vps is kinda pointless if all he wants is a mc server
I was answering your this about the main issue of trusting your data on a server lol
its the exact same
host can still access it
sure u can encrypt it
but at that point
your mc data aint that deep
No I mean
You can get an VPS and do a scheduler to download the files
Or you can use that cool plugin for drive backups
Or you can set up the VPS to upload the whole server on drive
I'm unsure how this could be done but I'm sure it is possible^
The epycs that uses ultraserver are really good
yes
What would be the Ryzen equivalent?
around a r9 5950x
in geekbench score
