Monoscopic Version File Damaged
I downloaded the Monoscopic version of Open Brush for MacOS, but every time I try to open it, I get a “”OpenBrush” is damaged and cannot be opened. Move to Trash.” error message.
I’ve tried everything, from downloading different builds to disabling the GateKeeper function on Mac via the Terminal. I even tried downloading WineBottler and downloading the Windows version, but that didn’t work either.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix a damaged file?

I don't have access to a Mac, so I can't help you directly, but it may help if you are specific about which version version you downloaded and where you downloaded it from.
I've tried a few different builds (I can't remember which ones) but the build I downloaded most recently was "UI for Handedness + Reset First Use. (#412) #1407"
I should note, whenever I try to use the xattr command to override Mac's security, I get this message: xattr: No such file: /path/to/application./Users/__/Downloads/StandaloneOSX-Monoscopic/OpenBrush.app
That's the issue. Replace the /path/to/application part with just the path. That's meant to be a type of instruction and not the actual command to run. Sorry for the confusion
Thanks for you help! However, I can see why it said the file was damaged. The whole thing is super buggy. Will send video when I can.
Note that the Monoscopic release, especially on Mac, is not an official part of the product. It's useful in many ways, but it won't necessarily be perfect. That said, we're glad to hear about any issues!
I just tested the latest Mac OS monoscopic, and it seems to run fine... or at least, as fine as any version has ever run...
Out of curiousity Intel or M1 Mac?
Good point.
(I'm on an Intel Mac, for reference)
In theory Rosetta should handle things nicely on an M1. I'll try on mine later.
Also @23dogsinatrenchcoat out of interest - what are you hoping to do with the monoscopic build?
Hi! Sorry I haven’t had time to send video. I’ve been pretty busy. I’m on an M1 I believe, and I’m using the Monoscopic build because I think painting in 3D space is really cool, but I can’t really use VR because my eyes are very sensitive to damage.
Have you tried the monoscopic build? It's not really fully functioning as a replacement for VR. It's more useful for testing/debugging etc.
I have tried the Monoscopic build, and yeah, I see what you mean about it not being a replacement. It’s pretty buggy; again, will send a video when I get the chance!
Is there anyone who is actually working on the monoscopic version? Because it's not working very well. The teleport and erase functions don't seem to be working, and sometimes I lose control of the camera.
I really want this to work, because I think drawing in 3D is cool, but if I can't figure this out, I might just try Blender Grease Pencil again. It's pretty flawed, with stroke placement being unpredictable, but it's something.
As mentioned I use it for testing/debugging and other purposes. I don't use it for painting as there's too many gaps in the functionality.
That’s fair. I’d love to see someone build it out and make it functional for those of us who can’t use or afford VR.
It hasn't been updated in a while. The person that developed it hadn't used the existing monoscopic mode extensively and didn't realise how much was already possible so there was a degree of "reinventing the wheel". I think there's an equal number of issues with that version - just different issues!
I can’t figure out how to download it? I went to “Actions” and couldn’t find anything downloadable. I don’t know how to build it just from the code.
Yeah. There's no easy way. Github deletes non-release builds after 6 weeks or so - so our normal way to link to arbitrary builds doesn't work on things that aren't being actively developed.
Oh gotcha. Well, thanks anyways.
You'd need to download the project and run it inside Unity - but that's tricky if you've never used Unity
(and even trickier on an M1 Mac!)
Yeah I haven’t used Unity before
Well, thanks for all the help. Maybe I ask about a fleshed out Monoscopic mode in the feature suggestions, see if anyone picks it up.
We have future plans for some non-VR support. We'd probably start with an AR-based "live viewer" app. But it's hard to think how to get a nice UI for using all the other Open Brush tools outside of a headset without it being a ton of work.
That's the reason monoscopic mode doesn't offer much beyond simple drawing. They never bothered implementing newer features in monoscopic mode as it was a fairly niche feature.
That’s totally fair.
Sorry if I’ve been a bother. I just got really excited hearing about the Monoscopic feature and I was a little disappointed by the fact that I couldn’t really use it for much.
I wish you all luck with developing this amazing tool, and in the unlikely event you do flesh out the Monoscopic mode, lemme know!
Thanks! Will do.
