V.2.0 on Quest 2 - snapshots, gif, all black?
Since updating to openbrush v2, the snapshots and gifs I make are ending up entirely black?

happened to me too!
I have the same problem, and when I take a picture the picture is glitched. Previously, (v.1) restarting google and reopening the program helped.
I had the same glitching issue and mine was also solved by restarting the program. This new issue of the black snapshots isn't solved with restarting unfortunately
I tried uninstalling the program and restarting. It did not help!
Hi, apologies for these issues! We're tracking this bug here: https://github.com/icosa-gallery/open-brush/issues/388

Snapshots and GIFs are all black on Quest · Issue #388 · icosa-gall...
Discussed in #385 Originally posted by mikepelletier January 30, 2023 I don't seem to be able to make a snapshot or a gif on the quest, the saved images are all black.
i'm also experiencing this issue
Thank you for your work, this detail, v 2 is a big step forward 🙏🖖
Thanks for looking in to fixing this bug!
Patiently waiting for this bug to get fixed (quest2). Thank you!
Any progress on this bug?
Just joined this server to search for help on this. Is there a workaround? Has anyone tried using the quest screenshot tool instead of the openbrush camera?
I wasn't able to get the Quest 2 Oculus screenshotter to output anything higher than 1080p for the screenshots. It works... but it's nothing like the Openbrush snapshots.
Yeah, I tried today and agree it's not great quality, but it is better than a black image! I tried all of the snapshot option in OpenBrush and all of them just give me black images. 😢
Same here. I hope they're working on it! Thank you to the devs for all your hard work, I know you all have a lot on your plates.
@zackenny You can change screenshot quality from 1080x1080 to 1920x1080 landscape / 1080x1920 portrait in settings. Do that first!
Ah, okay, I'll try that!
@andybak this broke during the vulkan switch 😅 I'm going to test on Pico to see if that works
Ugh. We've now got 3 separate forum posts for the same bug. I should have named the initial one better.
yep pico works, which is currently using glES
Quest - while snapshots kinda work, occasionally they get some odd black banding across them. GIFs are completely black
I'd keep them separate as they will each have separate fixes - most likely at a shader level
that's how a user would think about the bugs too
Ah - I see. Yes. This one is different.
My gifs are black, but my pngs are also black. I just jumped into this thread as it seemed close enough to (and part of) the issue I’m having.
Interesting! wonder if this was differences in hardware. either way, definitely broken
I think I'm on the public release, maybe I should try using the Beta?
we shouldn't have done anything since the main release that would have affected this to be honest!
Hello, been a minute for me and I just updated sidequest/device (meta quest Pro) and sidequest playing on device (havent tried grabs through steam/pc). is there a config rewrite that will get snapshots working again? I was running this as config :
{
"User": {
},
"Brushes": {
},
"Video": {
},
"Flags": {
"PostEffectsOnCapture":false,
"ShowWatermark":false,
"SnapshotWidth":7680,
"SnapshotHeight":4320,
"FOV":10,
},
"Export": {
},
}
Here's the config example page. It's sensitive about commas and braces.
Snapshot settings might be out of range as well.
https://docs.openbrush.app/user-guide/the-open-brush-config-file
You should be able to copy paste that in and then change the numbers
Awesome- thank you. Do you know max Snapshot dims and min FOV value? (((And i missed the part where blk out was only happening in stand alone… everything works great in wired but i do appreciate the updated config template 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼)
Although for snapshot all it says is "some reasonably large number"! @ancientworlds - do we know a more exact number we can put in the docs?
Quick glance at my snapshots folder shows that I have them as high as 8192x4068.
Limit is probably what your graphics card/system will handle.
I'd probably go with 4k or hd by default? Not sure what quest standalone can do without eating all its memory?

Changing to our beta channel will solve it, but really hope to make the fix live this week!
@mikesky @andybak has this fix been made live yet?
asking about the git repo...
I can answer that - it was merged to the main branch and released to beta a while ago.
So if I downloaded the main branch 2 weeks or so ago I should have the fix right?
Yep
Wel... mine are still black haha
Can you try the ready-built beta for comparison?
The Unity version you build with will also matter, please make sure you're using the version Open Brush's /ProjectSettings/ProjectVersion.txt is set to
Picking back up here and reporting as of Jan 12th is still an issue but good to know it is not a hardware issue on my hand with the Quest 2. This is an important part of functionality for my workflow so I very much appreciate the hard work that goes into fixing bugs. New to using unity as well. @mikesky is the Open Brush version you are referring to possible to use on Quest 2?
Can I just clarify what's still an issue? This bug is discussing three separate cases now:
1. The bug that still exists in the main release
2. The same bug that (we hope) is fixed in the beta
3. @phnx reports that he's still getting the issue when he makes his own build from within Unity but we haven't confirmed this.
@Justus🦎🌞💫 - are you checking the main release or the beta?
Thanks @andybak I was checking the main release (I believe that Is what the app lab download option uses right?)
I can’t speak to the other two - to clarify the beta is not the same as experimental mode which can be accessed in the settings.. I tried to take photos in experimental mode and also had mostly black images etc)
A lot of issues are fixed in the beta - which will be released as the main version very soon. I recommend using that. (One thing that really helps speed up our release schedule is lots of people using the beta and giving feedback!)
Ok thank you so much @andybak I will take time to load the beta and give feedback!
@andybak work beta version all the photo and GIF elements are working! The only thing I can’t seem to do is use the camera video framing tool with a stand alone Quest 2 but it no longer glitches when I try and it says to use Open Brush on a PC.
Very grateful for these fixes and also love the JPEG background option and my model textures from .glb files are now more complete 👏❤️⚡️
