Side note, you'd think 8K90 wouldn't be much of a big difference considering the quest devices resolution doesn't go that high. However due to the pancake lenses and perspective of a curved display the higher resolution actually results in a significant improvement in immersion.

I've been pestering the meta folks internally to support 90fps and I think they're just now realizing I'm correct. Either way I'm a little impatient and I don't expect them to support 8K anytime soon. I'm willing to pay for the bandwidth myself so long as it allows me to deliver the highest quality content to my viewers

Mind you this video looks good in 4K60 on a mobile phone and good on a quest device at that quality. Using Skybox VR with 8K90 is MILES AHEAD better looking. It's actually quite stunning. Unfortunately there is no service capable of delivering that tier of video quality, so this endeavour is quite cutting edge.

I'm testing 8K90 videos in VR and so far the only way I'm able to get it to work is by locally copying the files and tethering the meta quest device to my desktop PC utilizing the 4090 for rendering. This isn't a feasible avenue for delivering the content to others

For example a 150mbps h264 video has the same quality as a 90mbps h265, something like that. Then VP9 will match the quality at like 70mbps. Not exact measurements just an example.

VP9 works with every modern browser iirc. You can test yourself by opening YouTube and clicking stats for nerds and check what encoder it's using. Iirc if you go to like 4K60 they'll use AV1 which has a little less compatibility but even still it works on chrome and edge etc. Firefox too I'm sure

It's proprietary but VP9 is a bit better even and it's FOSS iirc

H265 has the same quality with around 30% less bandwidth usage you're literally saving money by supporting it and the quality improves simultaneously

That's a little strange tbh. YT delivers in AV1 which is better than VP9, which is better than H265, which is also better than H264. H264 is quite old and much worse than the alternatives so I am surprised it is referred to as the industry standard. Also, I can't think of any other service that doesn't offer 4K.
