Help me go wider

So the past few weeks I’ve been feeling that I want to transition to a much wider and looser style. Looking for brands and items to check out and advice for the process of how to be intentional in developing my wardrobe in this direction. These type of fits have been occupying my inspo lately:

A few recent fits I’ve been happy with, and a few shots of clothes I already have that I think are getting me closer to where I wanna be:

So I’m posting to figure out how far from my inspo I am and to get ideas for where to look for stuff that will get me closer — either as far as things to buy or details I may be missing, ways to style what I have. Budget is probably $150 a piece, picking up 1, mayyyybe 2 items a month. Located in the US. Brands on my radar that make sense for my budget and style are Anglan, Frizmworks, Estudio Niksen, Harvesty. How I got here: Lately I’ve just overall felt less and less inhibited about experimenting, and I changed jobs recently and no longer have any dress code to constrain me, so seems like a good time to go for it. The vast majority of my clothes are thrifted which has allowed me to experiment on the cheap but has maybe made it harder to develop my style in an intentional way. I’ve leaned pretty hard on straight and relaxed fits because that’s what has been available, so I feel like most of my wardrobe is not actually wide enough to pull off the style I’m aiming for. I see photos of myself in Dickies from 6 months ago and it looks wayyy too slim for my taste now. Also recognizing that I’ve only been paying attention to fashion for 2 years so kinda grappling with the growing pains here The M-1951 cargos in a lot of my pics get a ton of play and I think are working. Got these 6 months ago and I think they probably started my mental spiral. That and the white Frizmworks fishtail have been out of my wheelhouse and forced me to branch out from how I would usually dress. What I have/what I need: For shoes I’m definitely seeing a lot of New Balance and other running shoes in my inspo. I don’t have anything quite like that but feel like my current shoe rotation is in ok shape regardless: Timberland 3 eye lugs, Club C 85, Chuck 70s. Also have Paraboot Reims and Blundstones, which aren’t part of the inspo but I feel are workable Tops I’m pretty lost on. I have some bigger button downs I’ve been wearing untucked and a couple oversized-ish t shirts, but don’t really know what I’m doing here. Help. Please. Besides the cargo pants I have some barrel jeans that aren’t as dramatic as my inspo but I like them for now. My eye really gravitates towards pants so I have a bunch on my wishlist from the above mentioned brands, noticing a lot of them are balloon cuts that can look good worn floating above the shoe or sagging for more break. Also seeing lots of deep pleats that I love too Jackets I’m not too sure on, probably bc I haven’t figured out tops yet. Besides the Frizmworks I have a couple Carhartts, truckers, a trench, a Barbour, a balm for winter, none of which is in the inspo. Not sure how to deal with proportions, feeling like boxy is probably the way to go (I have cropped covered but nothing that’s really wide). I think I’m seeing more symmetry as far as matching volume and width top to bottom and less of the small top/big pants pattern I’ve been riding on. Less concerned here with weather warming up though

Your list of brands makes a lot of sense already. And your recent fits are all bangers and very much go in that direction. So I think you're on the right track! In terms of brands you could look into second hand/sale Nanamica, Satta, Sillage, Needles HD pants, maybe some EG stuff (based on the first two fits in your inspiration in particular). For tops/jackets I'd say your inspiration features fairly classic designs but then really big, and sometimes cropped. Just sizing up doesn't always work for that unfortunately but I think doomscrolling vintage tops and looking for the right proportions is you best bet. I remember that stevie also had a fit doctor topic some time ago with a similar question. I'll see if I can dig that up. Should be some good stuff in there. And maybe casey can also helpt out with some more recs for vintage stuff and ideas for things you can proxy from japan. Because I think there's a lot there but I don't know shit about it. i think i trend less gorpy than you but stuff in my heavy rotation includes yohji, our legacy, fujito, maillot, story mfg (careful w dyes….), brands listed above, margiela, cav empt, undercover, vintage banana republic linen shirts or really vintage big shirts or pants from brooks, prl, a&f, gap etc. tons of stuff from carhartt, dickies, LL bean all stick work here. alpha industries, sacai, ambush and vete all make huge bombers tops - i usually just go for a boxy t that i tuck and let billow or a really oversized top w a high waisted pant. don’t overthink it! once you find something that works it’ll be easier to replicate

jesus i wrote a whole book thanks anyone who read any part of that, and for all of the suggestions so far lots of brands i haven't heard of, and like everyone on here, will probably have to face the reality of proxying sooner rather than later great observations here, thank you for sharing mm yeah i think i am going for something slightly gorpy. The corduroy anorak in some of my pics is a recent buy that speaks to that i think. I have noticed some sorta technical fabrics and vests popping up in my inspo, so that's something i have in mind as part of the equation

Ok read the rest, one brand that i think does a lot of this vibe is sillage and specifically their CD he is great inspo. I agree on feeling a bit more stuck on tops for wider fits but I think its also somewhere that doesnt exactly have to be crazy oversized. Like a lot of more "normal" tops slot in well

I think that you’re most of the way there already. My advice is to hunt for a gigantic jacket. If you threw a huge jacket on top of most of your existing fits it will push the silhouette closer to what your inspo looks like. The easiest thing to do would be buying an intentionally oversized piece, but this could also be done at thrift if you’re lucky. Think that giant suit jacket fit from Charlie. And jacket could be tailoring, or something more gorpy like a light parka, or a trenchcoat, or a bomber…honestly anything can do the trick if its good enough. Also I would not go out of your way to get more tops at this point. Not every piece in your fit needs to be huge and what you’ve got already looks like it would fit in just fine.

Ty! That fit was me totally at a loss for how to style the jacket—none of my normal ideas worked so I just tried something counterintuitive (for me) and it worked Ohhh nice. Now obsessed with Sillage circular pants, thanks

I’ve got this trench that maybe fits the bill? I’m not 100% on it, maybe because the sleeves are really long.

yeah thats the right idea you can just roll the sleeves up a bit, or let em ride i used to really let long sleeves bother me but now i can usually work with them somehow or other

Shoot I’m sad I missed this qna Looks like you got some great advice I’d say keep Garuda SS on your radar too And Aidama is insane. Easily the best but pricier I saw anglan on your list They’re a great value, especially if you buy from them I’ve been working out how to do Kr proxy because their international shipping is stupid Mono Mart is a totally unknown Japanese brand which you can proxy and has similar stuff to anglan

So many great suggestions so far! I would also add Document, Cottle, Edwin to the list. Retail may be outside the above budget, but used prices can be super reasonable

Don’t worry, I’m well versed on your anglan threads and wide fit inspo pics, you’ve already contributed lots! Thanks for these recs too
