How many lods are you trying to load/generate and also what memory is that? RAM or VRAM?

RAM How can I check?
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
Go into dh settings and remember the number that is on the first setting
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
Oh, 1024
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
Are you using any other mods?
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
err big globe But I don't think the ram was much better on a vanilla world Other than that, a bunch of the recommended performance mods, memory optimization mods,

That Guy•5d ago
These could actually be an issue so try using dh without these and decrease the lod distance from 1024 to something like 512

😦 I've spent an hour sitting in the pause menu waiting for the LODs to load, every time I touch a setting, they're gone Is there a way for LODs to save?
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
The lods you have already generated will be saved to DistantHorizon.sqlite in your world folder

mesalonOP•5d ago
I just changed it. Now everything is gone.

Restart your game

It takes time...

mesalonOP•5d ago
This is the problem though. I was waiting for an hour for all of the chunks to load (was it even all of them?), and now it's gone. Will I have to be waiting for hours every time I restart my game to get the full dh experience?

If you have lots of lods then it will use a lot of ram and also take a while for all of them to load in. It will not take long for lods to load once they have been generated but it depends on how many threads you have allocated (I think). Now that you have generated all of the lods it shouldn't take that long for them to load in

Well, 10 minutes in.

God it loads so slowly Can you check the total progress of chunks loaded?

That Guy•5d ago
This is not normal, you are just using dh right? Yes I believe you can in the f3 menu or smth
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
Alright what is that, an hour? It's still not done lol

mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
Oh wow, 512^2 = 262144, so it's not even halfway done

It seems that you hadn't actually generated the lods when you had your distance set to 1024
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
How I saw what i see now, it was also an hour or so of generation

Get rid of chunky as dh's own generation engine is faster
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
I thought chunky was a pregenerator, it's always active?
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
It is a pregenerator but it doesn't generate lods, it generates normal chunks. See here: /chunky

Using Chunky to pregenerate for DH is not recommended for several reasons. The first one is the swiss cheese that might show up when using chunky while DH is installed. The second reason is that it's pointless, as DH has a build in pregenerator that is better integrated than chunky: - It saves space by only storing LODs, not normal chunks - It is faster to use DH's pregenerator to generate the LODs than first using chunky to generate the normal chunks, and then using DH to convert the normal chunks to LODs - It is part of DH, and therefore always/only called when DH needs it - Chunky calculates it's radius in blocks, confusing the user if they are not aware of this Distant Horizons' built-in LOD pregenerator is enabled by default, and can be sped up or slowed down by changing the Cpu Load in DH's settings, or disabled by turning off Distant Generation. If you want to pregenerate both LODs and normal chunks, set the Distance Generator Mode to Internal Server under Advanced, World Generator. This will of course take up quite a lot more storage space. Make sure you have C2ME installed if you want to use Internal Server, as the generation speed will be crap if you don't. Note, this also applied to other similar pregeneration mods.

mesalonOP•5d ago
oh what Well I knew it only generated chunks, but I thought that would speed up lod generation
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
No it will slow it down because then your computer is trying to generate a high quality and a low quality version of a chunk
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
Doesn't it have to do that anyway? You need something from which to decimate into an LOD My impression was that DH builds LODs from chunks I dunno how else you could do that, you have to generate something beforehand
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
Generation and building is different, I can't really explain it that well but dh (I think) generates lods off of the same information as vanilla generates it off of.
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
Oh so it just saves time by not having to actually create the chunk ok
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
Dh generates lower quality versions of chunks: lods Level Of Detail
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
@That Guy Okay so 20 minutes since restart, 11k lods have been generated. What is it like for you? Probably more, becuase it is not a big globe world
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
My pc isn't that powerful so I don't generate any where near as many lods as that. Though that does sound pretty normal for a high spec pc Could I have a screenshot?
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
So setting the chunk distance to 1024 isn't normal? 😦

That looks amazing!
mesalon
mesalonOP•5d ago
Maybe I'm setting it so high because these worlds are so big haha
That Guy
That Guy•5d ago
Not for me but for many others who have powerful pcs they set their lod distance to 1024 If you feel that your question is answered please add the solved tag to your posted

What quality preset are you using? Having that too high can also lead to high ram usage
mesalon
mesalonOP•4d ago
Everything is as high as it can be. The ram usage makes sense I guess
Puhpine
Puhpine•4d ago
yes if you're using the extreme quality preset, or god forbid even pixel art vertical quality, then this is probably expected
