Question regarding server side render distance

Server question Just a quick question that has me a bit confused. I understand distant horizons is client side, but I’m a bit confused how that interacts with server render distances. Obviously having high render distance on a server causes a great amount of lag. I want to install distant horizons on my server, but I know no server would be able to handle such render distances as a setting within the server itself. So for example If the server render distance is 16, does distant horizons still work by allowing the player to via their client go way beyond that granted the chunks are already generated? Thanks in advance for any help.

I am not sure you fully understand how render distances and lods work. So an lod is an optimized version of a chunk and is stored client-side unless you have dh installed on the server. With dh installed on the server, the server generates the lods and sends them to the client (I think) so you don't have to manually explore every chunk and wait for dh to make an lod off of it. Dh is highly optimized but it does depend on your server's specs. Also many servers can handle dh with multiple people playing. Distant Horizons actually has a server themselves which people could play on.

That makes sense thank you. So if you were to enter a render distance, a normal one like 16 for a server would be fine, and LOD’s would just generate normally from there

Lods don't care about the server's vanilla render distance limit if that is what you are asking as dh isn't rendering unoptimised vanilla chunks
