Home Server Specs for PaperMC
I want to build my own server to host a game server and to run MariaDB, just for the game tho, so not a big database. I want to host a Minecraft PaperMC server that needs to be able to handle 10 simultaneous players or more with 30-60 Plugins, also including some heavy ones (An Anticheat, Logging Plugin, Map (like dynmap but it’s called BlueMap) and some others). I need decent storage for many backups and files. That all shouldn’t be a problem, but my budget is only 300-450€. It should be relatively quiet as it will sit under my bed and I wouldn’t mind low power consumption.

so are you asking for a list of parts for the server
Yes, but wait
This is my current list
Part List - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X - PCPartPicker
Part List - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
gotcha
do you mind buying used parts?
If you have additional questions, ask away
No, if they are good quality
alright
Just nothing sketchy
you dont need a pc case?
I would love to have a good one, but it doesn’t fit into the budget anymore. I still have an old case laying around but it has no see-through panel or anything and is older than me.
But yeah, I’d love a case
Just can’t afford it
i see
450 should be cap
dyk what case it is?
just to see if its compatible
but it should be fine
Oh, I don’t know
I can send some pics

So these are the pics of the case
That was my old pc
ah ok
Now I upgraded to 4060 build
So that case is obsolete
alright
Sry I can’t send any better pics, I am not at home rn
Those where the ones I had
you dont need that cooler ngl

Thermalright Burst Assassin 120 SE 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler (BA120 SE)
this one should be fine
for 30 bucks less
Great
a few degrees higher in temps doesnt affect performance in any way
unless its hitting 90+ and throttling
As long as it doesn’t tank performance, I am fine
idk about that mobo honestly
it doesnt have bios flashback
so it might not be compatible with the 5800x cpu
id get a different one
youre going to be using ethernet- correct?
@Das_Grosse_J
Yes
alright

Part List - AMD Ryzen 5 5600, Montech AIR 100 LITE MicroATX Mid Tower
im sorry this took a while
but i managed to fit a case i there
since im not 100% sure if that old thing would be compatible
the montech apx is rated c tier on the psu tier list and 550w is more than enough since you dont have a dedicated gpu
5600 is fine, you dont need the extra threads the 5800x provides as minecraft is generally single threaded
only world gen is multithreaaded
Is this for a public server?
No, private
But might host public in the future
Or at least semi-public
I just need some help with securing the server as I am not experienced in like port management or keeping it safe
That is why I wanna keep it private
Its more worthwhile to rent a server then
You don't have a dedicated enterprise internet link i supose
What is that? I guess that answers your question tho
Yeah I am actually renting right now, but the whole point of the build is to no longer need to rent
Residential internet connections are very bad for servers, that's why self hosting is not recommended
Your power system isn't redundant either
Okay, how much do you pay right now?
$450
At most u can afford a 3600 build
Hetzner rents that for $40/m
Let's discount $20 for the Internet/electricity
That's 2 years worth of renting if you buy a server
120 a year
I heard from someone that this is not true if I don’t have more than 10 players
Can you maybe tell me how much bandwidth a single player would use
It depends on the ISP
Then I can tell you if my internet is enough to support the 10 max players
Because that would be my playercap
Well what speeds do you get?
Can’t tell you right now, not at home
Okay so buying a server is 4 years of you renting not counting light and internet
1-5mbps depending on optimization
But it's not just about internet speed
That's what everyone goes for but it's honestly not that important
player counts dont matter except for congestation and isp limitations (which 10 players can still cause)
residential isps just have horrid routes
disallows/throttles all hosting not on business plans etc
This
ISP to ISP is even worse
if its Server to ISP its decent cuz at least it goes via a T1 or IX or smth but ISP to ISP may travel through 20 different upstreams to reach your neighboors house
Maybe I am understanding it all wrong, but wouldn’t this still be faster than the server being in a data center at the other end of the country?
Also if I have for example 40 MBit upload, then 10 players shouldn’t be a problem right?
No not really
Only for like players in your same city or neighborhood with your same ISP (assuming their routing isn't shit)
The actual speed isn't, well for 10 players it may saturate at times when loading new chunks or so, also if you use your Internet normally it will affect the server
Internet packets don't just fly across the air, they go on cables, so it's not like there's a direct cable to your home
Lets say, you buy a server, even on the other side of the country... your traffic would be like this:
Player -> neighborhood Player's ISP hub -> city's Player's ISP HUB -> Main country's Player's ISP HUB -> Country's Main IX (Likely) -> Server Provider
If you self host, traffic would look like this:
Player -> neighborhood Player's ISP hub -> city's Player's ISP HUB -> Main country's Player's ISP HUB -> Country's Main IX (Likely) -> Main Country's Your ISP hub -> Your City's ISP hub -> Your neighborhood ISP Hub -> Your House
In the 2nd example appart from ading tons of hops all of them (Except the IX) are residentially serviced which means lower service level guarantee which means lower quality and bigger chance for issues like packet loss to happen
