Business-Casual for SWE in Finance (London)

How is this outfit for a software engineer in finance in London? I would probably switch out the t-shirt for a different colour (navy / grey / white), but this is what I'm thinking of wearing. Photo album: https://imgur.com/a/jPDYwDO I currently wear a formal shirt with suit trousers and Oxford shoes, but I'm definitely one of the more formally dressed people on my floor and I want to make a switch to something more business-casual that's more comfortable and lower maintenance. I bought these chinos recently and I'm not sure whether the Stan Smiths look weird with them.

it would fit in at work if that's what you want to achieve, but what exactly is your goal? just to be comfortable?

Yeah something that's lower maintenance and more comfortable – it's mostly the shoes that I find uncomfortable because they're a lot heavier and harder on my feet especially if I'm meeting up with friends afterwards

stan smiths a completely fine choice if you find them comfortable

I mentioned the thing about fitting in at work more as added context because I dress a lot more formally at the moment but it's probably a bit much

depends, I'm also a swe in finance (nyc not london though) and we have a very wide range in office going up to button downs and dress pants but that would not be out of place

Stan smiths are stiff. I wear the lux version and find them a bit more comfortable than the regular ones. You can pretty much wear them with everything. TBH this outfit looks like the most on brand SWE outfit possible

Hahah yeah, I'm wearing the lux version too because the non-leather ones feel cheaper and less comfortable

Swap the Patagonia fleece for a Patagonia vest and your ready to pitch to a VC in the bay

I guess I'm just a bit self-conscious about this because I've never really worn chinos before and previously went either a lot more formal or a lot more casual

I’m assuming your office isn’t a suit required kind of vibe. If it’s just like a normal modern workplace you’re good to go.

Yep that's right, the tech floor here is 'business-casual', dress for your day sort of thing, and there's a wide range in how people dress

Same lol Baby steps Add a fun top when you’re ready, maybe go to Percival in London and try on a cool knit polo. Those always slap in an office environment where most people are just wearing chinos and sweaters. Doesn’t take much effort

Looks simple and inoffensive. In a more casual office will serve great 👍
