Do You Make Time to "Dress Up" Just for Yourself?
If you wear a uniform to work or don’t have to get “dressed” every day, do you ever take time to just try on outfits for fun? I’ve started setting aside dedicated time to go through my closet and put together different fits and found it sooooo helpful. Also notice it helps identify items that ive been neglecting or curb spending. Also documenting my favorite combos, helps with ready-to-go outfits when im in a pitch.
Hoping im not alone in this, but for those of you who do this too, any tips to make dressup time more productive?
1) How do you stay organized
2) get the most out of it?
3)Also, if you take fit pics to document outfits, how do you make them look better than the classic iPhone-in-the-mirror shot? Any tips on lighting, angles, or setup? I’d love to step up my documentation game. Sometimes I will love how the fit looks on body but it doesnt look as good in picture.

Natural overcast light is way better and easier than what most people can set up at home
I don't try fits on at home, if I make a fit I'm leaving the house with it
I still need to get on this myself but I like have a mental catalogue of what pieces can go with which season and use the time to theorycraft stuff either for the current or upcoming season
I wish i have the mental fortitude to do this. ADHD brain cant keep them in order so documenting helps alot !
kind of feel like pics are w/e bc phones have a tendency to wash out a lot of detail unless you have optimal weather like raisin said lol
and I think it's a bit tough to learn how to pose more naturally/dynamically in front of a camera vs the mirror so some fits end up looking awkward
tbf I neglect a lot of stuff in my closet too so :xdcrying:
like I said work in progress!
Hmm maybe my desire to optimize the pics is missing the point all together and just the act of getting dressed and documenting more important.
I've found the biggest impact my ADHD has on fashion is hoarding clothes I don't wear anymore. If there's something you haven't worn in months I'd move in from it
like I said in my first comment I'd also suggest actually wearing stuff out. Just like pics can change how a fit looks and feel, being outside and moving around in a fit makes a big difference to how it feels on you, whether good or bad
maybe a basic tripod setup if you can afford it
I see some people in my neighborhood bring that stuff to the park or on the sidewalk sometimes
Yeah, I tend to wear them out to test ride a "fit" even if im just going to trader joes. But from a time efficiency standpoint trying multiple on during one sitting seems like a smart move, especially when the creative juices are flowing
pro tip is that that's basically what the grwm accounts do
no way anybody has the motivation to make and edit a whole setup every morning so they just shotgun it in one day lmao
I think it's good practice to do both methods
that would make sense. The whole set up with lighting, tripod etc daily would be a drag. Ill try and mix a lil of both
I have the same problems mentioned above & I also have ADHD - use the notes app outfit hack to keep track of all my fits:

I also have the same problem in terms of hoarding clothes I never wear - what I have been doing is setting myself a challenge to build fits i love with the pieces i don’t wear and adding them to the notes app, if i find that i can’t build enough fits i love with a piece - i either sell/donate the piece OR if the garment really speaks to me I consider it my “project garment” and i search for & think about outfits i could build with that garment and start to make it a mini project to build out some fits with it which then informs what i might be looking to buy while thrifting or shopping. i basically only have 1 project garment at a time and it gives me time to really sit with that piece, think about my relationship to that piece and whether i really want to keep it.
i found that this method was a really great way to balance out my wardrobe, reveals gaps in my wardrobe & is a fun way to be creative and learn a lot within constraints.
At the moment, I’m working on a jacket that I think would look great with some light wash jeans (which i don’t own) to pull together a couple of different fits, so now I am thinking about buying some jeans and am thinking about how i could incorporate those light wash jeans into my overall wardrobe to make sure i am not just buying it just for one fit.
I have recently tried the app “Whering” to organize the stuff in my closet and pair items up.
It’s kind of tedious at the beginning to take pics of all your clothes, or find pics online, but so far that time investment up front was worth it for me

I’ve heard great things about Whering but i did this for a different app in 2018 and it went under and it was really frustrating because i invested all that time
But i like the fact it shows you the pieces you never wore etc
Yeah totally, TBD if i use it longterm but so far it’s been fun
I use Figma to track my wardrobe and test outfits
and store inspiration pictures
For apps I use Fits which is pretty good but they keep changing the interface to be more of a social network which is a bit concerning
I’m too lazy to repeatedly get dressed, but wish I did this more often
It’s a fantastic idea
Which I’ll be yoinking, thx
3) I usually take pics to share on a couple of Discord servers/send to fashion friends. I keep them in an album in my photo app.
They’re very much classic iPhone in the mirror photos. Through practice, I’ve figured out which poses tend to show the outfit in ways I like. I also crop the pic and don’t hesitate to turn on different lights in the room to avoid weird shadows
I personally do take time to dress up for myself. No one appreciates the way i dress as much as i do and it’s nice to have an outlet to express myself every day
That’s cool! Do you have a system? Do you just pull things from your closet and have a huge pile of clothing by the end of it? Do you document and do you have a system for that as well?
I got you!
@adte @kewlpinguino @LlamaλWave thanks for the app reccomendations. My biggest concern about using these apps is that they are normally a arge time commitment upfront and alot of them either go out of business or change the app around which can be frustrating after the time sink
thats definitely fair. stylebook has stuck around a really long time but its also probably the worst UX. And as for the time comittment its definitely a real thing but it was worth it bc im the type of person who tracks as much as i can (lastfm, trakt, letterboxd, etc) but its not gonna be worth it for everyone
I use this one too, just wish they would let you add more info for each item such as material, pattern
sorry got timed out for a week before i could respond LOL
I have no system I pull clothes out and when I don’t like them, they go on the floor until I inevitably accrue enough willpower to wash them
Has anyone tried the Indyx app?
Kinda a whering competitor
I didn’t give it a fair shot bc I found it really ugly lol
I think there was something else I didn’t like but looking at screenshots I definitely remember thinking it looked ugly
Slow af
And agreed ugly
Hey, about Figma, it sells to big tech businesses so unlikely it'll go under. For clothing, it's pretty easy to use, just pasting images and dragging them around, maybe cropping them. I don't think it's a big learning curve, since I'm just using it as a pasteboard.
