Clothing in video games - Topic of the day 3/9/25
We have so many options these days in video games for what to wear. How do you like to style your character? Do you like to change styles or keep the same one throughout the playthrough. Is your character a reflection of self or a role you want to play?

Guys only want one thing meme
Lmao I just got back into Style Savvy on my DS a few hours ago, how fitting
I usually try to match the vibe of the game so the character doesn’t look misplaced in the scenes if that makes sense?
In games that specifically focus on outfits like Style Savvy or the Nikki Games I usually dress my character in outfits I would like to wear myself
At this point I would like to note that I ate with this:

it depends on the setting of the game, if it's somewhere i think "oh i wouldn't mind being here" then i will style my character somewhat after myself if possible
but having the freedom to pretend being someone else can't be undervalued imo
i also am very new to thinking about fashion and style in general so being able to experiment with things in a video game setting gave me some baseline concepts of things i liked and didn't like without having to trial run it in the real world, i don't know how true that would ring for anyone else though
oh this is just an excuse to dump my ff14 screenshot folder
thanks guys!!
before i do, because i’m eating breakfast and don’t have the folder available atm, i do also want to say - i like dressing my little guys like they belong in the setting
i roleplay a lot in my mmos, and usually the fastest thing to suck me in is the setting
so i like to make it clear where my little guys are from, if i can, and what they do with themselves with just their clothes
i do it in housing, too, when applicable
im jealous of the customization available in that game
it never was my style but a lot of my friends play it and are always showing off their fits and their interior decor
Which game do you mean? Infinity Nikki?
FF14
Oh I‘m blind
14 has a lot of good tools it just sucks that to get body diversity you have to mod the shit out of it
and also that the devs get real picky-choosy about when they want to accurately depict textured hair
I was gonna say, fashionsouls / souls games come to mind
Monster Hunter too, making cool looking armor is so much fun
Fighting games have some great designs. See classic KOF and Tekken
oh hey
this is kinda my thing since... i study game design :bloberm:

Some examples:

...i need to sit down and just gpose for the next like hour, it's occurring to me that i have no current screenshots
in the meantime! here's some old gposes of my foppish gay nobleman from not-france

his name is xavierre, he's a class traitor using his noble station to help usher the collapse of nobility for a more equal existence
you can tell these are pre-dawntrail though cause his ears have no subsurface but it's fiiiine
The original plan for Cyberpunk 2077 had four distinct subcultures with their own fashion, design and even architecture. It got somewhat diluted in the final game but you can still see elements of it

i wish they had leaned more into it
entropism’s workwear influences are fun to play with
I used to go crazy with the runescape outfits
But
Best fashion game ive played was warframe
Not analogous to real life clothes ofc but it was so fun picking different helmets and armor and little ornaments for your frame and the colors were so customizable
It was so fun
okay i'm gonna go slight spam here since i'm actually trying to show the entire fit
so all of these are for my current (rp) main, who comes from limsa lominsa, aspires to be a pirate captain, because slavery is still a problem and sometimes the only way to solve stuff like that is outside the law's reach. also he's damaged™️
here's his main fit for his main job, this took me some 20-something hours to assemble because i couldn't get his gauntlets to drop in the dungeon they're from.

the one time i'm sharing something that uses mods outside of hair + texture details + body scaling, because i tend to prefer vanilla mashup mods when wrestling with glamour. nine times out of ten, what i'm using is already available in-game, and if it isn't, it's made from things that are

viper, using vanilla hair

last one! samurai, his pirate captain fit

okay dump over
can you tell i fixate really really hard on this game
My best glamours are on my PC :(
My best ones I uploaded to Eorzea Collection

3rd pic has a modded eye but no gear is modded
I really like A-shapes so my character is usually also on them
But he has a color scheme of his own that are not my favourite colors irl
i was gonna say he seems to be very flowy in his clothes
i like the critter
i swear to god i feel like i know this miqo but none of the mutual servers/friends line up so maybe your cat just looks like an acquaintance’s cat
This game has 4 face models everybody looks like everyone :xd:
this is also true lmfao
I cannot for my life distinguish female miqote 1-3
it’s real hard except with certain facial features enabled yeah
sometimes i have to use elezen noses + facial hair to tell the dudes apart
Warframe mention 🗣️ fashionframe was my jam, i spent hours trading for plat to buy more colors and accessories
I loved how customizeable that game was despite being constrained to existing character models/bases
To be fair it's because Face 1 has messed up normals and wasn't pretty until Dawntrail so everyone used Face 2
It doesn't help about one in two elezen I knew used Artoirel's hair
Not really about customisation but my wife and I played persona 3 & 4 recently and it was really fun seeing all the fashion which is to say the dreadful fits we were both wearing back in 2009/2011 mirrored on the characters
