shader fails to load completely; no chat message. 1.20.4
iris doesn't show the failed to load error, I had to open the console in the launcher to see the failed to load error. the shader pack also drags into the shader pack selection screen as a "valid shader pack".
the shader doesn't technically support 1.20.4, but I fail to see how there could be much difference between 1.20.1 and 1.20.4.

apologies for leaving you on read for so long, I decided to "do my own thing", so to speak
me looking at the log sent me down a rabbit hole of downloading colormatic for the colormap shaderpack (a really good idea, apparently!), among other mods listed here (like the skybox mod) https://optifine.alternatives.lambdaurora.dev/. this has made the pack work AND work better than it otherwise would've. beta lighting! hoo-ray!
only slight differences that I can't seem to fix are the skybox not really working, and the smooth lighting on the water while still retaining smooth lighting elsewhere, which there doesnt seem to be a mod to turn off specifically. oh well. if there's possible help with those two issues, I'd appreciate it. otherwise, I've solved the issue....

No chat message is expected, any loading errors are now stored in the game logs.
With that said, can you send over your game logs so that we can check on the error?
How to find crash reports and logs
Please upload logs and crash reports to https://mclo.gs. This makes it easier for us to read them, especially on mobile. It also censors any information that may be considered private, such as your Minecraft access token or computer username
Logs always generate on game launch and can be found in the logs folder of your .minecraft directory. We are probably interested in the one named latest.log.
Crash reports only generate when Minecraft crashes and can be found in the crash-reports folder of your .minecraft directory. We are probably interested in the most recently created one.

also nostalgic tweaks appears to be my friend and perhaps yours too (edit: it fixes that smooth lighting issue I mentioned :3)
