Shm question

In this question, why do we ignore work done by friction when applying the energy method(this is what I've seen in most solutions online) cuz when you displace the top rod by a distance x ,Work done by friction should be non zero right? ; Also is it possible to do this without energy method, I tried but couldn't get the correct answer
