Recommendations for bare metal servers
Ok so right now our server is on Pebblehost dedicated (bare metal). Fairly inexpensive, but on two separate machines now we're having some issues with crashes. Its getting ridiculous. We used to be on interserver, but support was absolute garbage.
We're looking at bloom maybe but im looking for suggestions on bare metal hosts.
Current specs are
128GB DDR5 RAM | AMD Ryzen 7 9700X CPU | 1Gbps Network | 2TB NVME Storage for $134.99/mo i think. We have flexibility to pay a little bit more, but should be within reason and we'd like to stay around our current specs or better of course

but on two separate machines now we're having some issues with crashesCan you explain more on this? Typically pebble doesnt have these issues commonly
Well I’m waiting on them to reply on the current ticket but on the last machine (we switched because of some billing shenanigans but also had hardware crashes) we had several crashes in a few day time frame.
We went offline while they went thru hardware checks with nothing to report.
I thought “ok maybe I just got a bad machine” but we just had another crash on the new server within the last hour and even with all my dockers on in pterodactyl I’m using 30gb of ram out of 128
I’m just done with them and want to switch.
Gonna have a talk with the other admin when they’re awake in 8-9 hours
I can only recommend you datapacket, outstanding service and uptime and network, it's really great but im aware it may not be inside everyones budget
Like the mc servers crashing or the entire machine?
The whole machine.
Like I couldn’t log into my pterodactyl panel I had to get onto the dedicated panel side and reboot the physical machine
Hmm that's weird
Are you sure you aren't like getting ddosed?
Nothing shows up in the pebble DDoS reports page
Usually the methods able to crash machines are not big enough to show up on volumetric protection
How else could I check ?
Also I just looked. Datapacket is way out of our price range lol
Imagine
What specs do u need
Roughly what I put in the initial post tbh.
You get what you pay for
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We have a server that has like 400 day uptime
Yea we aren’t that big lol
Do they provide network analytics?
I’m looking over it now I don’t see anything significant
I notice a small spike around the crash time but that spike is only like 9.5mbps
How many packets per second?
Even 3mbps can be enough to crash some machines
I don’t see that on the page only inbound and outbound speed
Ah RIP
the circle is around the time it happened. idk why that blue spike happened earlier on but thats outbound and we had no issues at that time

the green is inbound
hmm
yeah thats sus
idk
install some network monitoring software
any recommendations? would be nice if i can install something on my windows pc to monitor the server - i do have ssh and vpn directly to it
sorry, not rlly... what we use is custom
If you are a bit knowledgeable on python you could probably use chatgpt to make a script that does it though
like just either report it to grafana or save it to a .txt
so when it crashes you can see network usage
uh. im not but one of my moderators can run circles around me so ill ask them
thanks a ton
Np
if you see a ton of TCP packets or ICMP around the time it could be whats crashing it
it can also be smth else but that spike is sus
and according to support its also not hardware failure
do you have cpu usage graphs?
the only graph the panel gives me is network. but Ive asked my mod if he knows of something or if he can write somethng for general network/CPU/RAM usage that I can monitor properly
rip
im used to having like a lot of graphs srry

man that would be nice lol
hopefully something exists or I can get something written for a proper real time graph
✨ D a t a p a c k e t ✨
m o n e y
lol

trust me we want better shit - we just cant afford at the moment
Yeah
i mean
i looked at those prices and almost had a damn stroke
for what you pay rn
you could afford a 7600 32gb at most from dp
its worth it
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
oh im not doubting that
but we literally dont have enough coming in a month

Rip
well
check out every possibility before moving hosts lol
if anything hetzner is prob the cheapest
i mean we had a cheap one last season but support was horrible and so was their admin panel
we used to have interserver
Why do u need admin panel for a dedi
more of a just in case - for situations like today where I can get in and restart it myself
like i wouldnt even have been able to ssh earlier when we went down
wed be cutting it close with the 7900 32 gb
just make sure it has IPMI
wdym?
Like we can just barely afford that on the datapacket prices
$250/m?
Yea fair. Pebble has it also but gonna see if something else is going on before we switch.
Yea we have just a bit more than that coming in monthly
u need 128gb?
ive got bulk discounts lol
We’re not using 128 now but we will be if our expansion plans go the way we want them to when we don’t have these frequent crashes
Pebble itself can go up to 196
Figure out exactly whats causing the crash
what location do you use mainly or what loc is your playerbase in?
Yea waiting on a few replies now.
Well pebble is in the UK but most of our playerbase is in the US but I’d like to expand that also
why dont you move to the US?
You could get a dedi with bloom/prismnodes/pufferfishhost/ etc for US and unmanaged
Bloom is on our radar
I forgot pufferfishhost existed
Should stick with bloom :sipjuice:
( totally not self promo )
We were in the US before. Pebble was chosen for price
🤦
there are a lot of good dedi providers in the us below $250
Youd have to cross exam to find out why i said that. making this an ARG
And you should not pay for memory you dont use
just get it off a decent provider that can just pop in 2 extra ram sticks whenever you need to upgrade
I pay for 128gb and use 64
i dont see your point :YEP:
okay but you dont have an extremely small budget
I do
hetzner
$60 a month
:yeahyupyupyepyepyupmhmyeah:
a bit diff case
If he wants to host in the us
has a small budget
and can either pay $100 for 64gb or $150 for 128gb
he should just pay $100 cuz he wont use the 64 extras
and when he needs extra ram, his server will have more revenue he can afford the upgrade
Well right now I need to determine what’s causing the crashes. But I’m gonna look into pufferfishhost
datapacket >>>
My brother in Christ
Get some friends
buy like
10-20 servers or so
for all your friends
get bulk pricing
pay $200 for 7950x 128gb
I don’t know anyone else that needs servers lol. Datapacket can’t happen rn
rip
Heres blooms bare metal pricings

Id suggest the 7700X if you can spare that much extra if not
5800X :Prayge:
damn
thought it was cheaper
its not that far away from datapacket
7700 we can afford
only like $50 difference on the 7950X configuration, and DP's is a X3d
ok buddy
what
Wouldnt be a bad choice if you want to go with bloom ofc
buy the dedi
and colocate it
ez
only $40/m
what
its a viable option
a 7700x build is only like $1k
:despair_troll:
pay it with a credit card
finance it to 12 months
Thats $80/m
With a $60 colo cost
$140/m
Bruh
and after 12 months
only $60/m
Stop pushing datapackets
im not pushing datapacket
im saying to own the hardware
You might wanna ignore upioti at this point :pepeFacepalm:
what
is it not a good idea?
You think I have the network bandwidth and extra money for the extra electricity ?
And room for that kind of a setup ?
The datacenter is a Meh way if you have the money for it and willing to do it
which is not really worth
no im not saying to put it on your home
like
buy the server
and ship it off to a DC
datacenters handle the power, internet, and uptime
most of the time
ive seen providers offer as low as $25/m
I mean it was probably shit
but
you get me
but youd be paying a fortune to remote hands and dc's
Why?
ive seen providers with like $40-60/m pricing
offer 10gbit
and like a few hr's of remote hands
a decent dc colo would be 40-80 a month
a decent remote hands that doesnt fuck you could got for 50+ and hr. it can take maybe 2-4 hours for the full setup so 200 down the drain
god forbid the server comes in broken and the guy is there for 8+ hours :YEP:
On the US he can find good ones for $40-60 with setup included and a few hrs of remote hands monthly
Me when the

How much is a dynatron?
when you got moved to a new machine, did you have to reinstall the OS, or did they migrate the OS installation?
I only ask because it's possible that your OS installation is the issue and not the servers themselves
We migrated but what about the OS could be causing issues ?
theoretically you should be able to see system logs from the last machine start by doing
journalctl -o short-precise -k -b -1
and if there was an error it could've logged, it would be there
I personally have no idea why it would happen, but if one machine randomly crashes, hardware tests okay, get moved to a second machine and it crashes... seems like a software issue
if you need to go further back, you'd just increase the -1 to -2 to get logs from older rebootsIs us hosting that expensive now jeepers
wdym bloom is mid range
Hes getting like a 10mbps incoming traffic spike before every crash
so thats something
