CPU Comparison (General Hardware)
Hey there,
Recently I've heard alot of differing comments regarding Minecraft's performance, some say it's single-threaded, others say it's not, I really can't seem to figure out the actual situation.
Currently I've got an [email protected] (
4Cores 8 Threads
), although I'm looking at purchasing a server with 2xXeon Silver [email protected] (16 Cores 32 Threads
).
Curious on the opinions between these two CPU setups.
The conclusion I've come to is the following:
[email protected]
It won't be able to run several servers, although the servers it does run will be relatively high performance
2x Xeon Silver [email protected]
It will be able to run a significantly larger number of servers, although they won't have as much performance as the i7 system.
I'm looking to get other opinions considering I don't really have a clue what I'm talking about hardware wise, and I could be insanely stupid for passing on the Xeons.
Thanks!35 Replies
what about pushing a bit more and trying to get a server with a xeon gold 6140 if it isn’t that much more expensive?
Not sure if I'm insanely stupid here, but the listing I'm looking it is cheaper than the Silver
Am I fine to post the 2 listings in here?
sure thing

Other than storage, the Gold looks like a better buy?
I actually have a few servers with that exact cpu for reference, the performance itself is fine, but realistically, a ryzen 5900x machine (or newer) would be much better
if minecraft isn’t the main focus, the xeon scalable based machines actually are pretty good. If it’s mainly for minecraft, maybe try finding a good deal a ryzen 5000 or newer machine
Am I correct in my above research that having less cores and faster speeds would be better for Minecraft?
it’s also notable to mention that the xeon scalable machines are pretty power hungry, I believe mine draw ~350w full blast and there aren’t any SSDs
clock speeds mean nothing, the xeon gold can turbo up to 3.7ghz
Wow alright, I was under the assumption it could draw around 280w according to the specs
At this point, I think it may be better so buy individual parts and build a ryzen5900 machine
synthetic benchmarks are slightly better at giving a “guess” of performance, at least for single core workloads (ie: minecraft), but it’s a bit more complex in the real world because those xeon scalable CPUs support avx512, but consumers didn’t get avx512 until the ryzen 7000 series and only the intel i9-12900k has avx512 and newer consumer intel cpus don’t
(avx512 specifically isn’t important to minecraft, but it was just an example)
At the moment I have 2 machines.
One with an
i5-4460
which is running Unraid, mainly for NAS storage, media servers, web servers, etc.
The other is the i7-6700
system which is just running Ptero and some servers.
Ideally I'd like to have one machine to run everything.
Would the XeonGold
system be better for this, or should I look into building a Ryzen 5900
systemwell, the xeon gold machine would probably perform about the same as the i7-6700. A Ryzen 5900 would be slightly under 2x faster
just depends if you would want to do more server stuff on a real server, or if you need more performance for minecraft
for reference, this is the power draw I have at idle

At this rate, I'm looking at getting some cash together and doing a Threadripper build, best of both worlds no?
I didn't think amd actually had any consumer threadripper CPUs release recently
Probably best to stick with having 2 machines?
Ryzen specifically for MC, and a smaller Xeon system for everything else?
yeah, I just personally probably wouldn't want any xeon machine older than the first gen scalable CPUs, everything else is pretty slow
Alright, thanks for the insight.
I'll look into building a ryzen 5900 system
I wouldn't go for blades, but watch out for deals. This is what I paid for my machines

so ~700aud
nonononono
not the hpe blades
nono
you'd be wanting hearing insurance running those
Guess that’s what the garage is for lol
the switches and fans are just power hungry for blades. I only have 3 machines running at 100w each, but the chassis power draw is at 600w
Sheesh
nah i aint buying the hpe stuff
they are insanely loud
you could also look at dell's 7xx series, those are good as well
I had to remove 4 of the 10 fans from the chassis because each fan was drawing ~80w for a moment
as a fellow hpe owner, you understand how noisy this image is 💀

unplugged 2 while system is on, it is not happy at all
are you gonna be home hosting these?
That’s the plan
Oh gosh another one
Is it for friends?
Or for a public server
Friends
Alr
Just keep in mind your isp is a big part of the performerance
And also it would be good if you have redundant power
Yeah I’ve got gigabit so I’m not too worried about that.
At the moment the issue is server-sided lag from chunk generation
No, the speed isn't the only thing that matters in networking
bad networking in australia? Never
