Brand Spotlight: "Big Box" Stores (Target, Walmart, etc.) - Topic of the day 2/17/25
Sure they're good for groceries, spare phone chargers and the like, but what do big box stores have to offer in terms of clothes: convenience? fit? style? something else? Are there any standout items or brands you've encountered in these places? What downsides are there to shopping in such a place? (please try to be respectful in your discourse, the mods have it hard enough trying to stop dropshippers from advertising every five minutes)

Target Goodfellow still seems to be pretty popular
Goodfellows in target for general purpose basic clothes. pretty good brand!
cheap clothes in a convenient, usually close by place is good to have for people who need it badly
also as far as underwear goes pair of thieves is phenomenal and can be purchased at target and walmart
^
the goodfellow basic tees and tanks are very good, just bought some to replace my worn out cheapo hanes tees
ik you can get rustlers at walmart too, crazy value
I think there are very good reasons that these clothes are available and there are plenty of good reasons that people could be buying from target/walmart/fast fashion brands in general. I think that your average middle class type of person should really make more of an effort to not spend their clothes budget at these places. Especially if they are someone who likes clothes. In terms of unethical fast fashion target is right there with zara and H&M.
also true
Growing up I basically had my pick of Salvation Army or Walmart for clothes, so I’ve sorta got a soft spot for the latter. Idk how it is these days but from what I can tell they haven’t changed a ton. Seems like true basics (tees, work clothes, etc) are available and can be had at a pretty reasonable value. That said, the minute I was making my own money I stopped shopping there. Knowing what I do about fast fashion now my assumption is they probably are just as bad if not worse than most mall brands.
i tend to go for asda or marks & spenders if i need underwear, vests etc. but im not sure if m&s would really be classed as big box
I don’t buy much from there, but I can report that the Goodfellow underwear I bought years ago has held up surprisingly well.
Target has had some decent collaborations over the years. JPG, Rachel Comey, Sandy Liang to name a few.
My first job was Target so I have a bit of a soft spot for it, but I don't think I'd buy anything these days, especially since the price for the quality pales in comparison to what I can get secondhand
Good for convenience and basics though
Target as some 100% cotton cord overshirts right now that are good the price $20
i got one of those on clearance for 8 bucks it was sweet
I kinda miss when Target had variety
Converse One Star and Mossimo and Merona being different tiers
If you need generics or undergarments I think it is a great option. Undershirts? Plain white crew socks (if that's your thing)? Sure. No real point "investing" for things like that unless it is a comfort/skin sensitivity issue. I don't know if I'm an exception here or not but I also definitely have "I am a presentable human" clothes and "Zero fucks are given" clothes. Maybe you all are all-in on fashion 100% of the time, but if I'm on a Saturday morning grocery run with a toddler I am unapologetically wearing e.g. cheap sweatpants with the coffee stain from WalMart or similar. Is it a "fashion" choice? Not really.
