Wearing Clothes Off-Season - Topic of the day 2/5/25

Do you wear so-called "off-season" clothes year round (shorts in winter, coats in summer, etc.)? Why or why not? Does the season impact how a particular item is styled or perceived

I live in the SoCal desert, so there’s a really nebulous sense of “in season.” I wear summer clothes into November, Fall-like clothes until March, and then back to summer

same in louisiana you get about 3 weeks of winter clothing and the rest of the year is fall/summer

sizing is all over the place. I bought a large but they were huge, but they've got an internal string that you can adjust them with to basically anything

This is why I’m trying to buy silk-cotton polos out of season and having no luck!

Living in NYC, I find the temperature to be a challenge since it's normally very warm indoors (I live in a 100-year-old building with one of those radiators) but winters can be cold outside. So it can make sense to wear linen shirts in winter under layers, but something about it just feels wrong. It's like the texture and sheen of linen stick out. Especially if it's layered underneath a Shetland sweater or something with a tweedy texture like that. I've found that linen-cotton blend shirts can work with knits in the summer. They're not too shiny or wrinkly, but still cool enough if I want to stay the right temperature indoors. Also, sunniness can be more of a factor than seasonal temperature. I don't like wearing white/ecru pants on overcast days but I'll wear them in December if the sun is shining and it looks great.

Having lived in many climates....your winter may not be someone else's idea of winter. When I was in Florida, people wore parkas when it was 55 degrees. In Buffalo, you broke out the shorts as it popped above freezing. Personally, I'll try to explore but will never knowingly make myself uncomfortable for fashions sake. I usually err on the side of dressing warmer than necessary, but strategizing so I can remove layers of needed.
